Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

My office is in Newport. Thankfully I don’t live there. It’s a horrible place. Hull was a place I couldn’t wait to get out of, along with Brent/ Barnet/ Enfield in north London.

@TheBelmont same for me I don't like Brighton , doesn't help that when I was a teen I ended up out in the middle of the night there with a really seedy drug crowd of mostly adults (long story) , I went back to the aquarium with my children the summer just gone and I couldn't wait to leave !

FourTeaFallOut · 06/01/2023 16:45

I hate these threads. People live in and raise their children in these places that posters scramble over each other to say they couldn't tolerate for a day. I just don't see what you get out of this?

PuppyMonkey · 06/01/2023 16:45

There’s some terrible seaside leisure park area near Brean next to Burnham on Sea that wasn’t very nice at all as I recall. Worst holiday ever.

Meem321 · 06/01/2023 16:46

Paignton. I felt dirty just driving through.

@FluffyYucca Oh I didn’t realise there was two places called Newport, it was the one in Wales…

There are two places in Wales called Newport in addition to the several Newports in England. I think you mean the South Wales one because the Pembrokeshire one is nice.
My place that is weird is the Forest of Dean, specifically Cinderford.

xalo · 06/01/2023 16:46

Crikeyalmighty · 06/01/2023 16:49

@Pumpupthejampumpitup really? I think it's a pretty place with a lovely pub ! It is a weird approach though

Mummyof287 · 06/01/2023 16:49

Interesting thread...mine is The Isle of Sheppey...me and DH had our first 'holiday' there (because his parents had a rather run down caravan on it) it was bloody awful, roads full of potholes, nothing to do, the whole place felt like a desolate and run down ghost town (it was May so not exactly 'low season' either but all the beach arcades etc were shut down.Never again.

Makinglists · 06/01/2023 16:49

Forest of Dean - can't tell you why just makes me feel uneasy. Newton Abbott in Devon ditto - again on appears an OK place but I don't feel right there.

LibertyLily · 06/01/2023 16:49

Clacton on Sea
Brighton
Glastonbury
Southampton
Swansea
Penzance

Iamblossom · 06/01/2023 16:50

I came on to say Slough but was beaten to it

Crikeyalmighty · 06/01/2023 16:51

@Kitzpatrick I wanted to say that too to be honest.

stbrandonsboat · 06/01/2023 16:52

Middlesbrough - frightening and depressing

Betws y coed in North Wales - miserable, cramped and full of unpleasant walking types who barge you off the pavement in their superior walking way.

North Wales in general. We had to return home early because we hated the vibe.

My hometown has been mentioned a few times. I don’t mind, it’s just peoples opinions isn’t it?

Hoowhoowho · 06/01/2023 16:52

I love Newport in many ways. Cheap housing, extremely accessible to Bristol, Cardiff and London. A focus for investment so continual improvement. Universally despised so not likely to gentrify too much. Important place in the history of UK democracy. We made a calculated decision to live here because of the access and it was a good choice.

DigitalGhost · 06/01/2023 16:53

Bradford, it's just awful.

MissBattleaxe · 06/01/2023 16:53

Newton Abbot. Perfectly nice place but I felt like I was in danger and had to leave. Just really eerie like a ghost was in front of me or something.

Choconut · 06/01/2023 16:55

Bodmin is always the place that springs first to mind for some reason, but have to agree Newport is rough, Slough is a dump and there's plenty of London I really dislike. I agree that Brighton has a very strange vibe, I really didn't like it at all when we went and I think it's only got worse.
