Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

OOH you are being so mean about places in the UK. I understand that some places can look rundown but its not surprising considering so many shops and businesses are closing downing 2022/23. A lot of towns esp outside main cities are having a tough time. It's a difficult time .Yeah I get they can feel menancing if its dark and neglected. In my opinion a lot of places in Uk could do with extra support to help make city centres safer places with good street lighting and support to fill empty shops as a starter. Its not helpful just slagging off places.

Kettering and Northampton.
I love Blackpool though, don't understand the hate!

About 30 years ago didn't get out the car at Blackpool , two years ago we were in holiday in North Wales. We drove to Rhyl, didn't get out the car and drove straight back westwards. Bloody scarey looking place.

What part of Warwick? Old Warwick is beautiful. Heading out of it is pretty crap, especially with the 12,500 homes they've been building for the past 5 years.

I agree the old part of Warwick is very nice, particularly around the castle but last time I went there (around 10 years ago), there were very few shops or anything of interest, apart from the castle. Away from the castle, the town looked quite run down and 'unloved' which was a shame really.
I wasn't aware that so many new homes had been built, however you've convinced me that maybe I should make a return visit 😊

Trowbridge is depressing. Melksham, too.

Yup, agree - Calne and Swindon too.

Feelinggoodtuesday · 07/01/2023 19:46

@AuntieMarys I’m the mug who went on a weekend break in Bognor Regis thinking it would be fun by the sea. Arrived, despaired, drove the mileage back home immediately. Hotel costs be damned!

I just love London - we try to have a few days there every year, picking a different area every time to base ourselves in and explore properly. So yes, I'm one of those gormless tourists. 😂

I've decided I must be easily pleased - I've liked loads of the places being slated on here, including Paris, New York, Naples, Scarborough, Glasgow, Hull, Liverpool. I love central Leeds - the Victorian arcades are so beautiful and it has lots more independent shops, eating places and really old pubs than most cities have. And I've got a soft spot for Bradford - there are some beautiful old buildings and really friendly people, but it does have its problems. But then don't most places have their grot spots and good parts? I've been to plenty of rundown towns here and abroad, but I can't think of anywhere yet that I'd call a shithole. I would say though that Los Angeles was definitely the most soulless place I've ever been to.

If we're talking feelings of doom, rather than just places we don't like, I do get a bit freaked out when I'm on an open moor, wherever it is. Probably because I used to live on the edge of one and our dogs used to bring us bones to throw instead of sticks on a regular basis. And the one place I couldn't wait to get out of was the Beaumaris Jail museum on Anglesey - it just had such an oppressive and sad vibe about it.

I love the open moors. Spent many hours riding horses on my own on the moors above Halifax, they make me feel so free. 40+ yrs later and no longer near any moors I still get a sense of calm whenever we do manage to go. I can completely understand why they could be freaky though.

I went through Newport on a train recently. I was surprised at how historic and attractive the centre looked. Was just a mere glimpse, though. And some strange places being dismissed as dumps on here. All places have good and bad points.

Oh and Marseilles.

I second Marseilles, thought I was going to get murdered there

Oh yes, I can see where the feeling of freedom comes from. And the moors scenery is something special. It's just that creepy feeling of what lies beneath.....

Blackpool. Fucking hell on earth and ALWAYS colder than you would expect whatever time of year you go.

The only place I've been where they sell alcohol in the chemist's.

Wrexham. We’re a mixed family and being the white part of it I had never experienced such blatant racism before. It was truly shocking and awful to experience.

We’re also a bi-racial family and the worst and most blatant racism we’ve experienced has always been in Wales, sadly. Once we couldn’t get served in a pub in Pembrokeshire - the irony was we’d only gone there for their curry night!

You’re missing the whole point of the thread…

lots of affluent and desirable places that have been discussed…

Its less to do with crime, street lights and wealth and more how a place makes you feel on a deeper level.

On the opposite side to this, a place I was pleasantly surprised at was Shrewsbury, loved it there

Yes we went for business, expecting an average place and fell in love with it.

OffToThatPlace · 07/01/2023 19:57

Hythe and Dibden near Southampton/New Forest, and also Lymington - very pretty area, but there is a menacing and aggressive undercurrent to the area.

I have never met such narrow minded, unwelcoming nimbys, who are also very pretentious.

Rebcho · 07/01/2023 19:57

Blackpool is the most horrible place in the world

I've never really thought about it even though I probably should have, considering where I used to live 🙄.

garlictwist · 07/01/2023 06:51

What, the whole of North Yorkshire? The biggest county in the UK which stretches from pretty much North Leeds, to the border of Cumbria, and across to Whitby and includes the Yorkshire Dales, North York Moors, Nidderdale and York? OK.

Haha@garlictwist - I was going to say the same. It takes over four hours to drive from one side to the other.

Notmorecrapola · 07/01/2023 19:57

LA is a shithole - I’ve never seen so many homeless people or so much dog shit on the pavements. I hated the contrast with Beverley Hills which looked so clean and manicured. And the people were so false ☹️

tulippa · 07/01/2023 19:58

Kirkby, Liverpool. I used to work there and thought it was a complete shithole. People who'd grown up there loved it though - it has a very strong community spirit.
