Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

Newbiggin by the sea. My DM raved about it so we went to visit when we were in the area.

Full of betting shops and ankle tags.

Crikeyalmighty · 06/01/2023 16:29

Stoke on Trent- bloody awful
Luton
Harlow

I didn't find Newport that bad to be honest- better than I expected

JamSandle · 06/01/2023 16:30

Croydon. I just despise it.

CottonSock · 06/01/2023 16:32

Newport is very bad on first impressions. The road system through the town is awful. There are rough parts for sure and deprivation. But there is investment and some positives. Nice market, theatre, some of the communities, nearby countryside.

keepaweatheredeye · 06/01/2023 16:32

Poundbury. Horrid weird place. Also, Welwyn Garden City. Soulless and bizarre.

Sparrow80 · 06/01/2023 16:33

Has no one posted this yet? 😁

Newusernameaug · 06/01/2023 16:33

Grimsby - takes after it’s name!

purplewolfie · 06/01/2023 16:34

Bristol. Hate it.

ThePoshUns · 06/01/2023 16:34

If you were visiting the passport office then you were in the most run down part of Newport.
There are some nice parts too. I have to defend it, I grew up in Newport.
It's salubrious in comparison to towns further up the valleys such as Brynmawr and Merthyr.

crazycadetmum · 06/01/2023 16:35

Luton and Stevenage

Newport. Slough is just as shit

I came to say Slough, it just feels oppressive.

@FluffyYucca Oh I didn’t realise there was two places called Newport, it was the one in Wales…

For extra confusion, there are (at least) two Newports in Wales.

Kitzpatrick · 06/01/2023 16:38

I think it'd be easier to list the places that you don't find yourself desperate to leave. There are so many absolute shit holes in this country. Humans are digusting.

julie81 · 06/01/2023 16:38

I live in wrexham, moved back to area after living in Leyton. It is getting better. We have been here 20 years. If I hear racism I call it out and yes I have heard it unfortunately. There are good a bad parts like most places. There have been huge improvements though.

dropthevipers · 06/01/2023 16:38

Stevenage, felt lucky to get out without being stabbed. Grim.

TheChippendenSpook · 06/01/2023 16:38

Your going to get loads of replies saying Blackpool because we haven't had a good Blackpool bashing for a while.

Its a shame that the first Place most people see is Central Drive because believe it or not, most Of the town, away from the torist areas are quite nice with lovely residents too.

TheChristmasElf · 06/01/2023 16:20

@ItsOnlyWordsInnit Lol…

We are not some pretentious country life dwellers who only mix and travel in a 5 mile bubble…

We have lived all over, Glasgow, Jordan, Plymouth, I’ve never felt like how I felt today.

However, you were right on one thing, it was the passport office we were visiting.

Um, I think you got the wrong end of the stick there. I certainly didn’t say you were pretentious, I was just talking from experience. Many, many years ago I had a holiday job in a cafe literally next door to the passport office, every day we would get people coming in before or after their appointments, having travelled hours to get there, in utter shock at the state of the place. I was merely pointing out that there is a long tradition of passport applicants being less than impressed with the setting. I think there’s bern a fair bit of commercial development in the last 30 years, but more shops are now standing empty, and I think that gives the place a real feeling of despair.

Hintofreality · 06/01/2023 16:39

Blackpool, smells like the utter shit hole it is.

Also, Sevenoaks. Residents so far up their own arse they could make it an Olympic sport.

user764329056 · 06/01/2023 16:40

Every UK town high street is now betting shops/charity shops/nail bars, there’s not much difference between any of them

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 06/01/2023 16:41

Kirkaldy, Fife

monicagellerbing · 06/01/2023 16:41

Peterborough. I lived there for 2 years and hated every second, now when we go back to visit in laws I feel uncomfortable and down the whole time. The whole city is awful

Pumpupthejampumpitup · 06/01/2023 16:42

Nunney in Somerset. Had an awful feeling about it.

Cuppasoupmonster · 06/01/2023 16:42

LotteryWinPlease · 06/01/2023 16:17

Dublin. Fucking boring

Yeah I thought this too. Sprawling and nothingy.

Southampton - ugly shit hole stuck in 2008.

Luredbyapomegranate · 06/01/2023 16:43

TheBelmont · 06/01/2023 16:21

Brighton

and I know everyone else loves it…but it just makes me feel uneasy

It doesn’t make me feel uneasy but I do find it faded and sad. Not awful or anything, but I find the love for it inexplicable.

I have had to spend a bit of time in Swindon over the past few decades and it’s a place that has just never found it’s feat. And as it’s a lot less affluent now probably won’t.

I really wanted to like Bristol but I don’t. Never feels like there’s a centre.

Wonnle · 06/01/2023 16:44

Hull.
Leicester.
Canvey Island.
Wokingham.

2 good things came out of Canvey
The road and Dr Feelgood !
