Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

I've noticed some have mentioned abroad places.

For me, I hated Queens in New York and also wasn't keen on Las Vegas. Did not feel safe on the Strip and there were no police officers to be seen anywhere.

Elsie1966 · 07/01/2023 18:07

There's a Newport in Wales one in Cornwall and then one on Isle of man?

Edmonton, Canada. Vile

I quite liked it there, I used to live south in Calgary.

Izzieloo · 07/01/2023 18:11

Plymouth hate the place so gloomy when you drive up to it and so spread out for a city .

LookAtThatCritter · 07/01/2023 18:11

New York. Absolutely detest it every time I have to go there.

BradfordGirl · 07/01/2023 18:11

Brighton
South Kensington
Tunbridge Wells

AllAboutMargot · 07/01/2023 18:15

@Newusernameaug lol, I clicked on this thread to see how long it would take for someone to mention Grimsby!

gogohmm · 07/01/2023 18:15

I quite like Newport! I don't live there but can't see the issue from multiple visits, live close by

psuedocream3 · 07/01/2023 18:18

Hastings without a doubt, you couldn't pay me any amount of money to ever return there again.

@FluffyYucca Oh I didn’t realise there was two places called Newport, it was the one in Wales…

There are maybe 15 places called Newport in the UK. It’s just confusing, people were definitely lacking imagination. 😅

Miisty · 07/01/2023 18:22

Yeovil run down council spending millions but it hasn’t improved

Justontherightsideofnormal · 07/01/2023 18:24

Not a place but a shop ……..Ikea. I don’t understand how people rave about it so much and their grey tinged meatballs 🤢

Seven78 · 07/01/2023 18:24

I am not sure if anybody has posted this in the previous 35 pages, but this gives an excellent overview of Newport.

Cwbran looks worth a visit as well.

I'm surprised Darlington has got as many mentions as it has. It's such a little nondescript place I'm surprised so many people have visited. There's nothing of interest other than the railway heritage, which isn't really celebrated. There's minimal sense of community. The main thing about Darlington that saps the life out of me, is the huge culture of 'I want this to be fixed but I'm not willing to do anything about it'. The people who do try and fix issues about the town, if they dare to try to raise awareness/support for their cause, they're just met with 'Why are you doing that? It's the council's job'. It's usually nothing to do with the council, people can't even be bothered to find out who their indignation should actually be aimed at before they start complaining.

I'm sticking it out because my ND DS is in a school where he gets amazing support, housing is cheap which allows me to work part time while my DC are young, and I can walk everywhere in a reasonable timescale (can't drive for medical reasons). As soon as circumstances permit, I'll be getting the hell out of here.

Paignton and Torquay towns are dreadful
Isle of Sheppy (aka Isle of Shitty in our house)
Slough
Dartford

Hmm1234 · 07/01/2023 18:26

Lol was it chavinghell?!

artsperson · 07/01/2023 18:26

PrinceHaz · 06/01/2023 16:16

Yes re: Torquay. It looked very run down when I saw it. The Pizza Express is in a lovely old building facing onto a marina. That was ok.

Yes. We stayed in Torquay last June and couldn't believe how rubbish a lot of it was. The closed Debenhams is a complete eyesore. The best bits are well away from the crappy centre.

LexMitior · 07/01/2023 18:28

@Justontherightsideofnormal - indeed, IKEA is a shit tip and environmental disaster. Fight Club had it right about its cultish, samey sinister nature.

Now I think about it, quite a lot of nasty places have IKEA, Croydon, Wembley and Edmonton. Places of despair.

Wrexham, is utterly depressing, as is Flint. Caernarfon gives me the willies for some reason. As does Blaneau Ffestiniog. In fact the rawness of some areas the hills where no trees grow whether it's Wales, Yorkshire or Cumbria etc I'm just not comfortable. I find it forbidding rather than beautiful

Thank God someone said Blaenau Ffestiniog. I drove through there once, everyone knew I was an outsider. I only drove through the centre and stopped to give way at a pedestrian crossing. I kid you not everyone was staring. I was driving an average car, looking average in day to day clothes. No loud music or anything distinctive. I've never felt so foreign and I've been to Morocco in locations the tourists don't visit and had no problems.

Wolverhampton / Dudley, just feel so so unsettled there. Hence I haven’t been back in 20 years

I worked with someone years ago , that said the only good thing about Wolverhampton was the road out of it ! 😬

MrsMarni · 07/01/2023 18:29

For me it was Bradford. Odd place, couldn’t wait to leave

BradfordGirl · 07/01/2023 18:30

No Bradford is where my heart is.

ChristmasTensions · 07/01/2023 18:35

Nottingham has a friendly, nice vibe with good architecture. My GMOOH place is Stratford in London. I like most of London.

BezMills · 07/01/2023 18:35

Newport (Isle of Wight)

Flippingnora100 · 07/01/2023 18:35

3 Bs for you:
Barnsley - went there on a work trip once. It was really depressing and bleak.
Bracknell - dreary and soulless.
Brighton - I used to live there when I was younger. I went back there recently and hated it! It is fun and open-minded but also dirty and run down.
