Just visited Newport, couldn’t wait to leave, what’s your get me outta here place?

Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

Bradford (love Leeds though)

@FluffyYucca Oh I didn’t realise there was two places called Newport, it was the one in Wales…

There's more than one in Wales!

menopausalbloat · 07/01/2023 18:38

I lived there for twenty years. It's always been an absolute shithole. Another place I couldn't stand was Blackpool.

@throwawayusername2 Cairn services? If so, yes. I have only stopped there when absolutely unavoidable. It feels very unsafe even just being in your car in the carpark but I can't put my finger on why.

Not Cairn Lodge? That’s much further up, not that far from Glasgow really and are actually really nice, owned by the same people who own Tebay and Gloucester services

Irisheyesareshining · 07/01/2023 18:40

@Tomitma111 it was never like this in the 80s . The decline of the city centre is awful, there’s a feeling of poverty about the place. It’s such a shame , most people who live here shop in Cardiff or Cwmbran.

graysquirrel · 07/01/2023 18:40

I've no issue with Newport all be it a grim place, although living fairly near there as a child my parents would pass on through to Cardiff for fun, shopping etc.

Glastonbury does it for me. Feel terror building inside me whenever I've visited. Not felt like that anywhere else.

Also slightly less spiritual but glad to see Torquay mentioned. Tried to holiday there twice, both times upped and left early.

Deathraystare · 07/01/2023 18:41

Canvey Island.

Yeah. I lived there for a while. I know what you mean. That and East Croydon. I lived near there. The only good thing was the shopping centre and market The council are always trying to get rid of the market which is a shame. Prince Charles has been there you know, also Kate Moss and Johnny Depp!

nicolalxuise · 07/01/2023 18:41

Majorca
Mainly because I had a bad experience there when I was 15 and it immediately made the entire island unbearable for me, never been so happy to come back to rainy England😂
would never go back there

Flippingnora100 · 07/01/2023 18:42

Also did a work project in Thamesmead for a while. It was really interesting (where Clockwork Orange was filmed) but quite dark/grim/bleak/menacing. Dealers in the playground whilst young kids played etc.

And I'm going to add Rockingham estate and Aylesbury estates in SE London. I found them really cold and unfriendly, but maybe because the residents there were understandably sick of outsiders coming in to 'help.'

Brighton

and I know everyone else loves it…but it just makes me feel uneasy

Same! I never heard anyone else share that feeling, got bad vibes

fairtrauchled · 07/01/2023 18:45

Colwyn Bay.Beach looked nice enough ,but town looked depressing.

Bestcatmum · 07/01/2023 18:45

I had the misfortune to have to go to Bishops Walthamstow near Southampton today. It was the shittiest of run down shitholes. It made me shudder. I was in and out ASAP.

forlornlorna1 · 06/01/2023 17:20

Towyn shudder

Yes. I spent a fortnight there one weekend.

Butchyrestingface · 07/01/2023 18:48

I haven't been myself, but I hear from relatives that Borrowstounness (Bo'ness to locals) is pretty hard to beat for sheer makes-you-want-to-kill-yourself vibes.

Fanakerpan · 07/01/2023 18:48

Or even Newport R I!

beepbeepme · 07/01/2023 18:52

I used to live in Newport, it's not exactly a great place. Lots of homeless people around, the smell of weed everywhere and a lot of empty shops. However I have walked around at night in quite a rough area and didn't really feel unsafe. I wouldn't want to live there again though. It's not got much going for it, apart from the retail park. I know that's not exactly what you meant, but it is sort of soulless.

ortonym · 07/01/2023 18:53

I haven't been to either for over 25 years, but
Maidenhead
Stonehouse (Gloucestershire)
Apologies if things have improved since, but I wasn't prepared to find out...

keffie12 · 07/01/2023 18:53

Lots of places make me feel like that: the top 5 in no particular order

Leeds (personal reasons for that as to what happened there)

Blackpool

Middlesborough

Chesterfield

Huddersfield

Advanced apologies for anyone who lives there.

TheChristmasElf · 07/01/2023 18:54

Zax · 07/01/2023 18:07

Rural Devon actually.

Is there a reason you have quoted a few words out of a bigger sentence and made it sound completely out of context?!

Dorking feels very weird, especially along the A24 towards the M25.

I live near Chesterfield and completely agree with you.

menopausalbloat · 07/01/2023 18:57

Porthcawl is another shithole in Wales.
