Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

Newquay.

Maybe it was the part we stayed in our "luxury" holiday home (it wasn't!) but it was a run down neglected dump and I couldn't wait to come home.

HelloClouds · 07/01/2023 19:26

Orpington. Though I’m willing to accept that it might have improved in 30 years!

Trowbridge is depressing. Melksham, too.

Jaxhog · 07/01/2023 19:27

New York and LA. Not too thrilled with Vegas either.

OffToThatPlace · 07/01/2023 19:28

Sal on Cape Verde made me feel a bit uneasy but could be because the island is very barren and desert like.

redressgirl · 07/01/2023 19:28

Totally agree, and Melksham has a very weird, unwelcoming vibe about it.

Newport is an absolute dump. I had to live there for a few years and don’t live too far now. They’ve tried to make it a bit better with Friars Walk and the new market but to get to any of those you have to walk through what feels like the site of the apocalypse. Nothing but boarded up buildings, pound shops and those grotty off-brand chicken places. Grim.

And yes London. It feels so self conscious, like everyone there is trying hard to appear cool and modern all the time but it just comes across as a bit fake and weird. Almost like they’re all extras in some kind of film. I also don’t like those dark brown brick flats with rounded balconies (if you know the ones I mean).

@HootyMcboob76 Oh no, which Newquay? We just booked a cottage in Newquay in West Wales in the summer. I haven’t been there in many years but I remember it being lovely!

Hull. In particular Bridlington. Absolute cesspit of a place. Makes Weston Super-mare look like Monte Carlo.

Bridlington isn't in Hull 🙄 However, agree it's run down and miserable in winter, beautiful beaches though.

Arniesleftleg · 07/01/2023 19:33

Truro. Awful, awful place. Sorry to anyone from Truro. We actually adore Cornwall but this place was just dirty, cluttered and run down.

Peterborough. I lived there for 2 years and hated every second, now when we go back to visit in laws I feel uncomfortable and down the whole time. The whole city is awful

It's just been voted "Worst Place to Live in the UK" , an award it's won several times before. It lost out to Aylesbury last year, but won the title back this year.

Poundbury is truly weird in a Stepford Wives way. I can't imagine living there. Same with Welwyn Garden City. Weird vibes there plus the possibility of dying of boredom

You can't say you hate London because it has so many areas and they all have different characters.

I don't like the area around Wembley - that is quite stress-inducing, but places like Bushy Park are lovely. London does not = Central London. I'm not keen on Central London, although that is mainly because of the gormless tourists.

I just love London - we try to have a few days there every year, picking a different area every time to base ourselves in and explore properly. So yes, I'm one of those gormless tourists. 😂

I've decided I must be easily pleased - I've liked loads of the places being slated on here, including Paris, New York, Naples, Scarborough, Glasgow, Hull, Liverpool. I love central Leeds - the Victorian arcades are so beautiful and it has lots more independent shops, eating places and really old pubs than most cities have. And I've got a soft spot for Bradford - there are some beautiful old buildings and really friendly people, but it does have its problems. But then don't most places have their grot spots and good parts? I've been to plenty of rundown towns here and abroad, but I can't think of anywhere yet that I'd call a shithole. I would say though that Los Angeles was definitely the most soulless place I've ever been to.

If we're talking feelings of doom, rather than just places we don't like, I do get a bit freaked out when I'm on an open moor, wherever it is. Probably because I used to live on the edge of one and our dogs used to bring us bones to throw instead of sticks on a regular basis. And the one place I couldn't wait to get out of was the Beaumaris Jail museum on Anglesey - it just had such an oppressive and sad vibe about it.

What part of Warwick? Old Warwick is beautiful. Heading out of it is pretty crap, especially with the 12,500 homes they've been building for the past 5 years.

Ah, I didn't realise there was more than one.
Fear not, it was the Newquay in Cornwall.
Hope you have a good holiday!

Jenasaurus · 07/01/2023 19:35

On the opposite side to this, a place I was pleasantly surprised at was Shrewsbury, loved it there

Planet Earth. It's really gone to the dogs in recent years.

Agreed!

LuckeyBuoy · 07/01/2023 19:35

Belfast. The shithole to end all shitholes.

I love Truro, though St Austell might qualify for a "shithole" award, too.

Arniesleftleg · 07/01/2023 19:36

Oh, and Port Glasgow. Phew, I'm just glad I made it out alive!

Rubbishagain · 07/01/2023 19:36

Leicester- miserable place. Rude people and terrible drivers. Arrogant as well
