Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

As much as i love wales for its scenery they can be very prejudiced-im from london/essex my dh from wales

everywhere ive been as soon as i open my mouth i get funny looks and people tutting-one time i was slagged off in welsh and my sd fluent on welsh said to them careful what you say about people and translated it for me-they just look embarrassed and walked off

i know theres a history there but its not directly my fault and im nothing but polite there

You can't say you hate London because it has so many areas and they all have different characters.

I don't like the area around Wembley - that is quite stress-inducing, but places like Bushy Park are lovely. London does not = Central London. I'm not keen on Central London, although that is mainly because of the gormless tourists.

GloomyDarkness · 07/01/2023 16:50

For me, it wasn’t how ‘run down’ Newport is (most city centres are run down and dirty now, sadly), it was the general vibe. It had quite a menacing and desperate air. I have been to the passport office but have also been to many other parts of the city and I felt the vibe all over.

I've never got that from Newport but I did get the vibe from Nuneaton and it never felt as run down as Newport.

The treacle town -www.coventrytelegraph.net/news/local-news/nuneaton-nicknamed-treacle-town-investigate-13689032 is according to this historian just because it was rural and slower paced life rather than they never leave and stick together. I always felt it had this aggressive edge like violence was never that far away despite meeting many lovely people there.

Marks and Spencer Food Hall - full of rude people. The difference between there and Aldi is shocking.

What, all of them? 😂

I don't get your point. The op asked for places you can't wait to get out of. I listed mine and for some reason people think it's ok to have a pop.

Ugh.

I used to live near Hendon. It was so dull. From when I rarely ventured down south / central that was better.

Morecambe. I live 10 minutes away. I avoid it at all costs .

salsamummy · 07/01/2023 17:46

Stoke on Trent. Awful place.
We stayed about half hour away in a gorgeous cottage and visited some beautiful places.

TashaG · 07/01/2023 17:47

Blackpool - ugh just awful x

Rathdowney · 07/01/2023 17:50

Margate and Torquay

If we are doing overseas Alcatraz sucked to soul out of me, so glad to get on the boat back.

Tomitma111 · 07/01/2023 17:50

I have spent many years living around the Newport area, I have always found Newport to be a depressing city, I went into the center a few weeks ago I was honestly glad to get out of there, there is something about it that I just done like but I cant explain what it is. It has now gone down hill since Debenhams close and Marksies moved out of the center, there is nothing to go there for, except if you like charity shops

Ifrozethehoumous · 07/01/2023 17:52

Colchester is a place not to dally in. It’s not that it’s menacing but there is absolutely nothing there unless you are into history, barbers, nail bars or coffee shops. It’s now a ‘city’ which is a bit of a joke as it has hardly any shops and parking tariffs are extortionate. The M&S has left the high street and re-located to some godforsaken retail park which is constantly clogged up with traffic. I parked for just over 3 hours in a car park behind Fenwicks (the only decent department store left) and it cost me over £11. Absolutely not worth it.

I can't understand using the words f hell in a reply and I'm not allowed to type it into my reply

Dodie6 · 07/01/2023 17:55

Please feel free to stay in rural Devon from now on, then.. Frankly, the West Country is my idea of hell. White, Tory, racist....ugh.

MandieMandie · 07/01/2023 17:56

Just realised my Gammon joint has a use by date 2 days ago.
If it smells OK and looks alright, should I cook it ?

When I was house hunting in Newport, my parents suggested I didn’t go out after dark. At the time I lived in South London in an area nobody would describe as salubrious. Trust me Newport is fine.

I often am sitting at the coach stop in Newport at 3am and it’s absolutely fine. It’s rural areas that give me that feeling, after all if you’re going to be murdered by a stranger it will be in that remote farmhouse where they can torture you in privacy not in your two up, two down terrace in the city.

Have you heard of Fred West, Jeffrey Dahmer, Jack the Ripper. I could go on, but you get the gist.

Bepis · 07/01/2023 17:57

London - can't stand it and don't feel safe at all. Some areas are so rough that I wouldn't feel safe just walking down the street.

welcome2023 · 07/01/2023 17:57

Oh god Blackpool
Terrifying sexually menacing place
My children were scared at night and the awful threatening people and run down homes and gardens
My children asked jd this is where people go before or after jail as they couldn't understand the criminal people and lack of care
Just urgh terminate the place

Redandpinkstripes · 07/01/2023 17:58

Nottingham. Had a really strange vibe and every other shop was a Greggs 😄

DMW60 · 07/01/2023 18:00

Naples, Italy - very unfriendly

midsomermurderess · 07/01/2023 18:04

I found Penzance bleak. And Falkirk. It makes me mildly panicky (on the vanishingly rare occasion I'm there). It's so essentially pointless in that something and nothing location. I saw Kirkcaldy mentioned earlier. A once bustling, proud town now so empty and sad.

LifesTooShortForYourNonsense · 07/01/2023 18:05

Yes Torquay! And Paignton still worse. Full of those living on credit cards, huns, TOWIE wannabes. The nails, the eyebrows, the plastic grass and bling bars, concrete flat roof pubs.

Sirlancealot · 07/01/2023 18:06

Coventry, you feel you need to lock your car doors driving around some parts of the city

Rural Devon actually.
