Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

Once the artisan coffee lot move in to show the local ruffians there's more to life than Greggs we should be grateful.

No idea I prefer Morrison's coffee to any of that fancy stuff

gegs73 · 06/01/2023 22:51

Beverley in Yorkshire. Went with the family and we all independently said the same. It seemed too perfect/not real and a bit stepford wives. Felt a lot happier when we left.

Every time I have been to Holyhead, which has been a lot, even as a kid my overwhelming thought was....imagine being from Holyhead?!

Hmm dunno. Might be better in some ways?

Anyway I feel a bit guilty slagging off UK towns so just to balance it out : -

Kinsale. All yachties , gastropubs, arty tax fugitives. Nice old harbour but so far up itself you need an endoscope.

Leixlip -
Little town swamped by massive new estates and motorway

Esmereldaaa · 06/01/2023 22:52

Milton Keynes.. that fucking roundabout grid system drives me round the bloody bend.

To make the whole experience quicker and less painful 😉

😂

Yes London. More than 1500 sq km. Population of 9ish million. All of it is a "shit hole". Hooray for Mumsnet and all the intelligent posters who post on it.

It’s a good idea thing, Lindor, as it means they won’t visit London 😀

redandwhite1 · 06/01/2023 22:55

If you went to ASDA (so assume passport office) you were in the worst part of the city so not surprising!

Anisina · 06/01/2023 22:57

Some of the Cotswold villages, Beautiful to look at but the vibes made me shudder.

And lol at the Londoners who are upset that we all don't think London is all that. How very dare we.

emotionalmotionsicknesss · 06/01/2023 22:58

The lighthouse in Kintyre where Paul McCartney filmed a music video. Utterly silent and eerie. We got halfway down to it and we’re met with with a line of deer just staring at us (not sure what else deer do, really).
A lot of Herefordshire.
Glastonbury is full of anti vaxxers and weirdos but I have a lot of connection to the actual place and I love it.

HUGanALPACA · 06/01/2023 23:03

Paris, Paris and Paris. Felt totally menacing in and around the train station. My teenage daughters were constantly harassed on the street and in shops. It never used to be as bad as it is now. A real shame.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/01/2023 23:04

I'm making a list of places I'm now interested to go, to see if they really are creepy or sinister or just unredeemed generally.

Although from the number of people who have said Glasgow (a great little city in my opinion), it is mostly in the eye of the beholder.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/01/2023 23:07

"Felt totally menacing in and around the train station."

Never, ever judge a city by the atmosphere around the train stations!
Or by the view you get as you enter o the train...

CeriB82 · 06/01/2023 23:07

Lots of places. Mist of the cities and town ive been to. Cant wait to leave,

im a country girl. Love mud, wet weather, mountains and peace.

being able to “grab a coffee” and convenience of a theatre etc its high on my priority list.

hated Liverpool and Blackpool. Never again, grim.

london, id go again if i had to but i tend to get excited when its time to leave.

RicherThanYews · 06/01/2023 23:07

Southampton. It wasn't particularly ugly or offensive in any way, it just felt lacking or cold somehow. It was very strange.

CeriB82 · 06/01/2023 23:08

Aarght! Isn’t high on my priority list😂

Karmakamelion · 06/01/2023 23:08

Tunisia. The whole plane cheered as we took off.

Thatsasmashingblouseyouvegoton · 06/01/2023 18:45

Plenty of these I'm nodding along with
But the only place I've felt malevolence was at Stonehenge. Bright summer day, loads of people about. Could not wait to leave.
Never felt anything like it.

In terms of sinister energy rather than grim/depressing places…

Yes, Stonehenge is on my list too. Bad things have happened there.

Also Lancaster, especially the castle (even before I knew about all the ‘witch’ trials)!

The Tower of London.

Newport. Slough is just as shit

Slough. Coventry.

Grim

TinselTinselTinsel · 06/01/2023 23:14

I once ended up at a boxing club in Newport. Scary stuff.

Heatherjayne1972 · 06/01/2023 23:17

yeovil- just meh grey and depressing
slough - everyone we met there was just miserable
my partner hates Sussex- the whole county apparently has an ‘unpleasant’ feeling.

Moveoverdarlin · 06/01/2023 23:22

Hull. In particular Bridlington. Absolute cesspit of a place. Makes Weston Super-mare look like Monte Carlo.

BertieBotts · 06/01/2023 23:25

I liked Newport (in Wales)

Telford makes me feel the creepy time warp vibe.

Anywhere with 'artisan' coffee shops is my idea of hell. Generally frequented by dull of dull, average, aspirational dross.
