Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

Dudley, anywhere in Stoke on Trent

pollyglot · 06/01/2023 23:33

Another vote for/against Scunthorpe. Grey, downtrodden, gum- and drug-ridden streets. The children I taught brought me to tears. As an older, motherly supply teacher doing a one-term stint, I was a listening ear for many, as I was not a formal part of the furniture and from abroad. Their stories were simply horrendous. 11-year olds asking me to adopt them, begging me not to leave...the ones who wore the same filthy school shirt the entire term, whose green-snotted noses were continually wiped on their sleeves, who sat with me at every break and lunchtime, just for a chat. These were the kids who left at the end of year 11, to become 3rd generation beneficiaries., or to marry their cousins back in their home country and bring them to the UK. Utter despair.

I think it's best not to call places 'a dump', 'shit' or 'shithole' in a public forum. People living there will read it. I wouldn't tell someone in person that they live in a shithole, so I wouldn't do it in a public forum either. It's another thing saying you do not like a place, but 'shit' and 'shithole' is rude...

Fruitbatdancer · 06/01/2023 23:39

Luton, Milton Keynes and Dover. Oh and Camber Sands. We always say a little prayer for anyone who has the misfortune to holiday there as we drive through. Just soul destroyingly awful.

RelievedItsOver · 06/01/2023 23:42

I found Gateshead depressing when I was a kid. And I come from a depressing town that's been mentioned a few times on this thread.

Stunningscreamer · 06/01/2023 23:49

Bude
St Helier

Both depressed the hell out of me (was years ago though). A bit of a vibe that everyone's talking about you when you go into/leave the pub.

I quite like Blackpool though. Some nice places and everyone very friendly.

Stunningscreamer · 06/01/2023 23:52

oh and poundbury's a bit Stepford Wives for my taste.

Cakemonger · 06/01/2023 23:53

That's so interesting about Beverley @gegs73 - I grew up near there and never found it creepy. It was a lovely place to grow up but I imagine if I went back I might find it a bit dull and backwater-ish.

I find it interesting how lots of people seem to find certain places eerie - leaving aside the places with obvious deprived/depressing aspects it makes me wonder what it is - the architecture/landscape etc?

JocelynBurnell · 06/01/2023 23:53

Peterborough.

Got very bad vibes in Cheltenham

Swindon- I live in the Cotswolds but ds goes to college in Swindon and every day I take him to college I can feel myself literally losing all hope as I enter Swindon , it’s so grey and depressing and the bizarre magic roundabout is the epitome of weird.. the town centre is full of boarded up /empty shops and feels soulless .. sadly most people just go to the retail parks on the outskirts

Durham, surprisingly.

I love Durham, it's my happy place, although I haven't been up there for a good few years. However my OH lives up there and he said it is a complete shithole now compared to how I remember it.

HUGanALPACA · 07/01/2023 00:07

You are quite right - train stations are seldom the place that showcase a city. However, it wasn’t just the usual train station seediness. Menacing on this occasion wd b the correct word based on our experience.

The Arndale Centre in Wandsworth (London).

Newbury. A relative moved near there for work and we foolishly took them to the Tesco. I don't think I've ever encountered such aggression and spite from total strangers.

Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, Wales, Scotland have areas that are weird too but in a different way, I've never found the people unwelcoming. And as for those gloriously empty Roman road straight bits in Northumberland, they're one of the reasons I love that undersung county so much.

If we're talking combination weirdness the bit of the north west where we're currently residing due to work and family combinations is like a cross between Royston Vasey and the walking dead...

beastlyslumber · 07/01/2023 00:18

Edinburgh. A depression descends upon me as soon as I get off the train and i can't wait to leave again.

BootifulLoser · 07/01/2023 00:19

Oh, and honourable mention for the North Peckham Estate (if they haven't torn it down yet).
I had to walk through it 20 years ago enroute to a meeting (I worked at a local school) and it was so grim. Ugly buildings, rubbish and burnt-out crap everywhere and the only person I saw was a demented woman standing outside one of the buildings in just her pants.
No offence to anyone that lives there; I"m sure you're very nice. I admired the kids I knew that came from there apparently unscathed.

2023pending · 07/01/2023 00:25

Hyde, Manchester
I used to live there and I can’t describe the feeling it gave me. Just constantly grey and gloomy, nothing to do with the people or anything like that it was just a sense of dread even getting the bus home once I got into the town centre I’d start feeling so anxious. Always smelled of rain too

And, obviously Telford. So bad I had managed to wipe it from my mind.

Someone in a post here a year or two ago suggested it in a "Where to live in Shropshire" thread. 😁😁😁😁😁😆

Really? I love Edinburgh. Yes, there's a definite sense in some areas that dark deeds have been done there, but I like a bit of menace!
