Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

Gloucester too.

Whynobreadpudding · 06/01/2023 21:11

I lived in Luton from age 7 to 30 and I was a good town, also had decent shops and services like good library and you get to the countryside in 20 mins. To be honest it seems all towns have lost good shops cafes pubs and lack of community, also too many new high rise builds.

@ErrolTheDragon Mum is that you? I had a very similar conversation with my parents the other week about Trumpington 😂

Yes, it did for me as well (Welsh person here). That was over a decade a ago but it sounds like nothing's changed then.

It's the only time ever I've visited a new city or town and a stranger (man) touched my arse as I was waiting for the traffic light to turn green. On his way into a pub and thought he would have a quick fondle I suppose.

Swansea - I know of someone who got the train from London to Swansea for a weekend break. She got out at Swansea turned back round and got the train back because it was so awful

StillWantingADog · 06/01/2023 21:14

Sharm el Sheik.
the actual town I mean, within the hotel was ok but I didn’t last long at all when I ventured out.

Stockport is a bit horrible.

It's starting to get better apparently. I've been in both Stockport and Newport and Newport was worse in terms of atmosphere, Stockport worse in terms of potential danger and crime level, possibly.

MissingMoominMamma · 06/01/2023 21:15

I went to Rhyl today…

Swingoutsistersledge2 · 06/01/2023 21:15

Wigton in Carlise . Passed through and wanted to find somewhere for lunch as staying near the lakes. Couldn't wait to leave !

Gosh....which area of Cardiff did you visit...and when?? I'm surprised it made anyone's list.

I’d forgotten that one, got off the train and the stench and feeling in the station would have turned me straight round if I’d had a choice.

Sofia because it's such a huge place to condem like all of the south East

Yes, it's a huge shot hole. it's not a debate.

Go and question someone else's opinion.

Places I’m scared in are Mansfield and Keighley
Bala was the most unfriendly place I’ve visited
Rhyl was depressing

I love Bradford, amazing buildings and friendly people though run down as are most places now.

Did you keep calling Llyn Tegid 'Bala Lake' to locals by any chance?

Clevs · 06/01/2023 21:20

Stockton-on-Tees.

hartof · 06/01/2023 21:20

Last year we went to Hunstanton whilst on holiday in Norfolk and I couldn't wait to leave. Blackpool and Rhyl make me feel the same.

EarthSight · 06/01/2023 21:20

justasking111 · 06/01/2023 16:29

Wrexham, is utterly depressing, as is Flint. Caernarfon gives me the willies for some reason. As does Blaneau Ffestiniog. In fact the rawness of some areas the hills where no trees grow whether it's Wales, Yorkshire or Cumbria etc I'm just not comfortable. I find it forbidding rather than beautiful

@Startuplife Blaenau Ffestiniog is very deprived and all the piles of waste slate doesn't make it look exactly cheerful even on a sunny day.

Completely agree! Lewes especially feels very weird and scary. The East Sussex coast definitely has a weird vibe, but West Sussex and the West Sussex coast has a much happier, positive feel.

West Sussex does have a happier vibe (to me anyway) I don't know why but it does. DH bought something from ebay and the item was located in East Sussex so we decided to get the train but had to change trains at St Leonards Warrior Sqaure......well that place was downright odd, I can't specify exactly, but it was so quiet, hardly anyone was about it was like a ghost seaside town from 35 years ago. Apologies to anyone who lives there but if it's any consolation my home town of Chichester has been mentioned so it's swings and roundabouts!

No I didn’t call it anything! Just tried to go about my day, buy the odd snack etc. We were just our normal selves, seem to get friendly reactions everywhere else we go, and just got filthy looks, ignored and pushed past and made to feel completely unwelcome.

IamEarthymama · 06/01/2023 21:22

This thread has absolutely infuriated me!
Spent the day in Newport with my grandson and his friends and had a fab time.

Mind you, I run a community centre there and get to know at sorts of characters that people on here would turn their noses up at.

The market had been recently revamped and is fab as OP could have discovered if she had searched online before she visited. There are brilliant food options easily found.

Round the corner from the Asda is a vibrant Arts Centre with an excellent cafe. At Barnabus House. I held my civil partnership there.
If you wanted to eat in town you could have visited the Murenger one if the best pubs I know.
Tiny Rebel an excellent local brewery offers hipster beers and food.

Yes like every city in this country businesses are closing and people are struggling. Organisations are giving out tents to homeless people.

All the fault of the Tory plan to undermine all the nationalised industries and not the fault of the people.

A huge welcome to everyone who can see further than the end of their noses and especially to newcomers who recognise the qualities of Newport and the neighbouring Valley towns.

To all the others, don't let the door slap you on the arse!

To be fair this is 25 years ago but it’s stuck with me. Shame as we loved the canoe course

Ardrossan, where you get the ferry to go to Arran. Gives me the heebie jeebies. I feel sorry for tourists visiting Arran that this could be their first impression.

Crowthorne sets off alarm bells for me.

On Mondays at 10am? They stopped that years ago…
