Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

Any where in the South East. Soul less commuter towns full of MC wannabes.

MissCherryCakeyBun · 06/01/2023 21:36

Oh and Weston-Super-mare it's just grim

dropthevipers · 06/01/2023 21:36

Just remembered Abergynolwyn. The only pub I've walked into where they all fell silent (including the piano player) like it was a wild west film.

LadyRoughDiamond · 06/01/2023 21:36

Wakefield. Saw a tramp pissing against a shop window at 10am.

I haven’t RTFT but is there any town not on here? Nasty, snobby thread from a website that pretends to be left wing. Not everyone has the ££££ to choose where they live.

It's both snobby and yet covers everywhere? Is that what you are saying? Make your mind up! I read the OP as some places where there is a sense of the uncanny. Nasty, but not in the sense you meant.

JoonT · 06/01/2023 21:37

I live near Colchester and hate it. In the last decade or so it's really gone downhill. It's insanely overcrowded, with awful, awful traffic. Basically, you have a market town with the population of a small city. The outskirts are now full of horrible new estates, and the villages have been ruined by too many new houses.

Wolverhampton / Dudley, just feel so so unsettled there. Hence I haven’t been back in 20 years

Came on to say Wolverhampton 😬

I went to Rhyl today…

We stopped off in Rhyl last summer en route to Anglesey. It was horrendous. It was so awful, it was funny if you know what I mean. The only reason we stopped was because I needed the loo. I would never want to stop there ever again.

Has no one posted this yet? 😁

Ha ha. Grin

Leicester.

It was dirty and felt like the most polluted place I'd ever been...i can remember the air feeling almost thick. Was so relieved to get on the train and get the hell out.

FancyFanny · 06/01/2023 21:41

Peterborough

Covidwoes · 06/01/2023 21:41

Blackpool. Couldn't wait to leave, and I was only there for a day!

This is bizarre. Ludlow's famous for its food culture. There are pubs and cafes and a market selling local produce several times a week. There's a Tesco superstore and an Aldi right in town, a short walk from the station. Did you not ask for directions to them?

Famous for its non food culture when I was there though this was about seven and half years ago.
it was surreal

I was uneasy in Hebden Bridge, Betys-y-Coed and Thetford.
Agree about hills; I grew up in Cambridgeshire and hilly areas feel oppressive to me no matter how lovely looking.

Me too! Grew up and now back living in Cambridgeshire and I genuinely feel relieved in a way I didn't realise I would now that I can see across the flat stretches of land again! I love driving into Cambridge at dawn and seeing for miles in front of me. I find hills and twisty roads where you can't see very far kind of bleak!

It's just what you're used to I guess!

DottieUncBab · 06/01/2023 21:43

Brighton hated it

Ochre7 · 06/01/2023 21:44

Whitby is a bit odd imo.

That's weird me and my other half had a day out in Ludlow, it's got some nice shops and a market, it was during covid when you could go in a pub to sit down and eat. We got shown to a table, place was full, more people coming in and getting served after us. They just left us sat there for about half an hour, no drinks or anything. We had a baby with us and were knackered. Felt like they hated us. We got up and walked out and got a kebab. Ludlow is meant to be a foodie town 🤔

How peculiar
Perhaps they are only for local people 😂

Anisina · 06/01/2023 21:45

Cambridge. Full of posh twats riding bikes.

neerg · 06/01/2023 21:47

Blaenau Ffestiniog, Hebden Bridge and some parts of the Forest of Dean. While writing this reply I think it may be the steep sides/lack of light/down the very bottom of the valley vibe.

siucra · 06/01/2023 21:48

What exactly is the point of this thread? To make you feel better about where you live? It's snobbish and exclusive. Pass the smelling salts!

Irisheyesareshining · 06/01/2023 21:50

@IamEarthymama totally agree, Newport born and living here . Beautiful parks, excellent transport links , we are close to amazing countryside and the coast as well. It’s a pity our High Street can’t be improved but the foundations are there . Beautiful architecture waiting to be restored !

It's OK if you name a town north of the Watford Gap though.

MissingMoominMamma · 06/01/2023 21:52

How different we all are. People saying that hilly areas make them feel claustrophobic, but they make me feel safe. Flat areas of land don’t though- I always thought it was something to do with a primal survival instinct- places to hide etc…

IreneJones · 06/01/2023 21:52

The last time we drove the Llanberis Pass I had the most awful feeling of doom wash over me. It was bizarre, I've never experienced anything like it before. I felt very tearful and panicked. DH wanted to stop at a shop in Capel Curig but I persuaded him not to stop and keep driving. I have no explanation for why I felt like that!

Bit niche but Heysham, the whole place just feels soulless

I like the church with its rock-carved tombs.
