Just have just visited Newport for an appointment, we weren’t there long, toilet stop and cuppa in Asda, half hour appointment in city centre and then got lost on the way out but felt very uneasy the whole time were there. It had quite a menacing feel to it and even on the bare aesthetics of the city seemed quite run down with a lots of old closed pubs, shops etc…

I would actually go as far to say it made me feel quite unwell but I guess that would just be coincidence!!

We actually live rural Devon so not even like I’m not used to the odd lay line of two but I was quite relieved to get back on the road…

Has anyone else felt that about a place before?

Liverpool! We were meant to stay overnight but drove back the same day. What a horrible place

Lol you clearly don’t know the place that well. I lived there for 9 years and never felt unsafe.

Paris is crime riddled. Enormous ethnic tension too. Police in riot gear is the norm.

Hosting a European Cup final (as was the case last year) in such a city was madness.

I definitely felt the ethnic tension too. Lots of men with a weirdly simmering hostile energy too.

allthatglimmers · 06/01/2023 20:53

Bit niche but Heysham, the whole place just feels soulless

Catswhisky · 06/01/2023 20:55

Places I’m scared in are Mansfield and Keighley
Bala was the most unfriendly place I’ve visited
Rhyl was depressing

I love Bradford, amazing buildings and friendly people though run down as are most places now.

Has anyone been to Hatfield? That place is eerie, and has a forlorn feel about it.

I feel sorry for the international students who are lured there by the uni's promise of its proximity to London. They fail to mention the overwhelming sense of despair though 🙃

Clementine183 · 06/01/2023 20:55

Luton. V depressing.

Herefordshire. Fred West country.

I always thought it was Gloucestershire? Probably wrong though...

LindorDoubleChoc · 06/01/2023 20:57

Yes London. More than 1500 sq km. Population of 9ish million. All of it is a "shit hole". Hooray for Mumsnet and all the intelligent posters who post on it.

Walkbyall · 06/01/2023 20:57

Buxton, Grantham and Bedford for me.

@Stevie6 What's the point of walking fast when there's no where to go? 🙍

To make the whole experience quicker and less painful 😉

Been on nights out all over UK and Europe, and I’m pretty handy - that place had a serious edge to it. Don’t really care if you lived there, I know what sketchy looks and feels like.

I once had to go to a few of the villages outside Peterborough for work - they all had a really weird vibe. It's the closest I've come to feeling that everyone around me was conspiring and watching me.

It felt like the Wicker Man of the Fens.

Yes the Fens definitely have a weird creepy vibe!

Whotsit · 06/01/2023 20:59

London and Leeds. Both sprawling and difficult to escape

Thinkwicebeforeyouleavemylife · 06/01/2023 21:00

Crawley.

Every UK town high street is now betting shops/charity shops/nail bars, there’s not much difference between any of them

So true in many places and increasing. My small city, once beautiful, is overrun with hairdressers and charity shops. Another charity shop, in a large empty building opening soon.

We were in a small European city at Christmas. Designer shopping, a good range of smaller chains, independent shops, quality items.

The UK feels so run down, so lacking in quality.

OrangePomander · 06/01/2023 21:03

Birmingham city centre

The whole of the Isle of Wight

Our highstreet is the same...hairdressers, kebabs, fried chicken, a vape store.

I live in Merthyr. I moved here from Bristol in 2021. I’ve had people ask why until I showed them the beautiful 5 bed Edwardian house I bought on top of a hill overlooking green hills for the same price as a two bed terrace in Bristol and they’re blown away! The town centre doesn’t have a lot going for itself and there are some bits that are beyond grim, but the cost of housing and the proximity to the Beacons for walking was a win win.

deflated111 · 06/01/2023 21:07

Bognor Regis.
Not as bad but Reading is unappealing (centre, not talking of nice suburbs).
Amersham.

Friendofdennis · 06/01/2023 21:07

Many parts of London eg New Cross and Deptford are horrible. Also many swathes of West London are just grey grim and depressing

The next Olympic is in Paris

*shudders

No doubt they will put on a front for two weeks (police in riot gear won’t make an appearance, and extra policing will be brought in to the ghetto areas to keep close tabs on the ethic folk). After it’s over normality will be restored.

Easily the worst city in Europe I’ve been to for crime.

Sorry to hear Stockport is a bit horrible. I was on holiday there 50 years ago and I remember it had beautiful flowers everywhere.

Laughing at the idea of going on holiday to Stockport!

I live there, like (almost) everywhere else it has plenty nice bits. Also there is a LOT of development going on in the centre atm.
