What supplements do you take, and why?

I take turmeric for general joint aches, a probiotic for gut health, and a multi vitamin and mineral.
What do you recommend others should try, and have you had any noticeable results?
Just interested in optimising health in these troubling times, and hopefully giving the best chance of not needing medical intervention.

I take d3 because it was prescribed to me when I had some terrible joint pain. When the prescription ran out Id seen improvement so I chose to just buy it myself and have taken it ever since. No more pain.
I take cranberry extract on the hope it may help prevent UTIs. I had a run of them and decided I’d try anything. Not had one since taking it but that could also just be luck or the fact I’ve got good at sussing out the first tiny niggle and drinking enough to prevent it taking hold.
I also take omega 3, 6, 9 as advised for eye health. No idea if it’s making a difference, it’s part of a small host of things I do to keep my eyes healthy so no way to really tell what it alone is doing for me but it’s cheap enough to be worth taking regardless.

@SweetPetrichor that's interesting about the d3.
Perhaps something I should consider!

Berocca for a general perk up and I feel ( and I do know it’s not evidence based) that it perks up my immunity, Vit D3 - for energy levels, aches and pains and because of potential less severe outcomes from Covid, magnesium - for sleep ( peri)

Magnesium has been a game changer for me

Uuu interesting, I'm about to order some vitamins/supplements. Used to take cranberry extract for UTIS, not anymore as I don't suffer with that bastard anymore thankfully. Recently was taking omega as good for heart, eyes but have ran out and also for a couple of months used collagen for skin

Insaneinthemembraneee · 04/01/2023 21:17

Vit d3 especially because it's winter.

Coq10 for overall health as its energy for every cell in the body but depletes as we age.

B12, B9 and B6.

It is a game changer and very cheap to buy. I started taking it cause my wrists were in a lot of pain and I was initially sceptical that it would help but I was proved wrong - it cleared up the pain surprisingly fast.

SnarkyBag · 04/01/2023 21:44

I currently take feroglobin, probiotics, Vit D and C. Not sure if it’s helping yet as I was really wiped out with a bug of Xmas but had previously been very run down anyway. Am hoping now I’m over my virus that I’ll see an improvement in my general fatigue! Also adding in drinking water and going to bed by ten at the latest every night and a minimum of an hour outdoors everyday.

KangarooKenny · 04/01/2023 21:47

Vit D because it’s winter.
B vits for energy, apparently !
cod liver oil for joints.

echt · 04/01/2023 21:48

Vit D, curcumin 600mg twice daily, folic acid daily. All on doctor's orders.

The curcumin is interesting as it was suggested because I have low-grade wear and tear osteoarthritis affecting my left hip, minor pain and no loss of movement. My rheumatologist, who I'm not seeing for this, put me on to it. No pain at all now.

thunderstruckk · 04/01/2023 21:50

Vitamin D (prescribed), Iron, multivitamin tablets, collagen tablets, retinol tablets, cod liver oil tablets and hormone balancing ones (insulin resistance). Looks like a lot written down 😂 I take my turmeric and other similars through juice shots.

Blowyourowntrumpet · 04/01/2023 21:50

High strength Vitamin D as a blood test showed my Vitamin D was low. The GP said that more people have low Vitamin D these days as people are working from home and not going outside as much.

Puffin87 · 04/01/2023 21:58

I've been taking Boots version of Berocca for just over a week and feel a lot less depressed and tired.

HundredMilesAnHour · 04/01/2023 21:58

I take quite a lot of supplements. My 'core' ones for years have been a good multi-vitamin (Life Extension 2 a Day - recommended as the best by a nutritionist friend), a high quality fish oil (recommended by a psychiatrist at The Priority to help with depression) which is Omega 3 (as recommended by 2 nutritionists) by Nordic Naturals and vit D3 (Life Extension).

Following a torrid 14 months of long Covid (and additional complications of primary hyperparathyroidism as well as peri-sodding menopause), I also now take vit K and boron (aids absorption of vit D3), magnesium glycinate, iron (I have low ferritin but this has improved massively), vit C (aids iron absorption), Co-Q-10 (recommended by my long Covid cardiologist for brain fog and it made a difference within 24 hours - he says you notice the difference almost immediately or never, it's one or the other) and zinc (to help my immunity). I occasionally add B12 but my levels are quite high so I only need this every so often.

I also take JP's Dream Sleep (magnesium plus other stuff) as this really makes a difference to the quality of my sleep

KylieKangaroo · 04/01/2023 22:02

B12, iron, garlic, folic acid, magnesium and vit C. I have no idea if they make any difference but cannot bear to catch 1000 colds a year that my kids get, also suffer terribly with mouth ulcers so will try anything to reduce them too.

Does anyone else forget a day here and there, does that make much difference do you think?

HundredMilesAnHour · 04/01/2023 22:04

I forgot, I also take a probiotic (Symprove). Didn't count it because it's liquid. @@😙

Magnesium is a game changer for me too. I suffer from chronic constipation and i now "go" more regularly.

reluctantbrit · 04/01/2023 22:13

Vit D as adviced by GP when I had severe muscle pain. Magnesium for sleep (menopause).

SouperNoodle · 04/01/2023 22:15

I take vit D and Vit C with zinc.
I used to take omega 3 tablets and intend to start again.

FairlyIncognito · 04/01/2023 22:16

I take a bioavailable pregnancy supplement as breastfeeding and also choline (good for memory and baby needs it too apparently!) I soak in magnesium salts regularly too if that helps.

SquashesPumpkinsAutumnBliss · 04/01/2023 22:18

Vit D, Evening Primrose Oil ( recommended by Dr for breast pain), B12 spray occasionally and a daily multivitamin. Plus Folic acid, prescribed high dose.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 04/01/2023 22:19

Can I please ask the magnesium takers what type they are using? I started on magnesium citrate which did help my sleep but the effect on my digestive system became too much!

@Roseberry1 @reluctantbrit @runningonberocca

stargirl1701 · 04/01/2023 22:20

Vit D from Oct-Apr because I live in Scotland.

JamNittyGritty · 04/01/2023 22:21

Multi vitamin, omega 3 as I don’t eat fish, red rice yeast for cholesterol

can I ask what magnesium and circumin people are taking?

80sMum · 04/01/2023 22:23

I take vitamin D3, vitamin K2mk7, Omega 3, magnesium and calcium (though I try to get most of my calcium intake from food sources). These are mostly taken to try to prevent my osteoporosis from worsening (although the Omega 3 is also for my eyes). If I have a cold, I also take vitamin C.

Magnesium glycinate is best (or magnesium malate but this needs to be taken in the morning) such as this:
