What supplements do you take, and why?

I take turmeric for general joint aches, a probiotic for gut health, and a multi vitamin and mineral.
What do you recommend others should try, and have you had any noticeable results?
Just interested in optimising health in these troubling times, and hopefully giving the best chance of not needing medical intervention.

So interesting to read all this.
I often wonder if taking too many supplements can cause bad interactions, or an excess of a vitamin or something.
Not sure if I'm overthinking though!

Can I please ask the magnesium takers what type they are using? I started on magnesium citrate which did help my sleep but the effect on my digestive system became too much!

@Roseberry1 @reluctantbrit @runningonberocca

I’m taking magnesium bisglycinate 375mg tablets - 2 tablets before bed. Not sedating as such but make me feel calmer, less anxious and able to maintain sleep better.

I was a big taker of vitamins prior to listening to this: joinzoe.com/learn/podcast-truth-about-vitamin-supplements.amp

I stopped and have no noticed no difference in how I feel, haven’t had a cold etc etc. I concentrate on eating well and have dramatically increased my intake of fermented foods.

Im now quite sceptical of what they put in supplements, it’s an unregulated industry and companies can essentially say and do what they like.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 04/01/2023 22:27

I take high quality fish oils for brain health and to prevent menopause symptoms (not there yet, but getting prepared!) I’ve also noticed that I don’t seem to get pmt since I started taking them.
Fish collagen powder, started taking for skin, but unexpectedly improved joint pain.
Starflower oil for breast pain, meant to be more effective than EPO.
Food grown iron, for low iron. Don’t upset my stomach like regular iron tabs.
The occasional spray of vit d for bone health etc. and D- mannose if I detect a UTI on its way.

LadyOfTheFliessssss · 04/01/2023 22:28

I have Bs, C, D, iron, magnesium, glucosamine, collagen, evening primrose oil, and a nighttime vitamin which has a few things in it.

B and C for energy, iron and D because I'm deficient, magnesium and others to help me sleep and calm restless legs, evening primrose oil because it's supposed to be good for PMS, and the rest for arthritis.

runningonberocca · 04/01/2023 22:28

and by the way I’ve had no digestive side effects at all with the magnesium bisglycinate!

Yes, they can interact and reduce efficacy (or increase it) so it's important to do your research first.

For example, if you take an iron supplement avoid having caffeine for an hour before or after it as it reduces absorption (unless its heme iron). If you take 1000mg of vit C with your iron, you'll get the maximum absorption.

dolor · 04/01/2023 22:28

•Omega 3 for cholesterol
•Vitamin C for absorption.
•Lion's Mane for concentration.
•Black maca root for the same.
•Collagen for hair/teeth/nails.
•Vitamin D for lack of sun.
•Brainzyme Focus Pro (ADHD).

I take macuna l-dopa from a website called British supplements, honestly they make me feel so much better they release dopamine from your brain to keep you happy and the ingredients are all natural, massively helped me cope after my marriage break up. I ran out of the tablets and I slowly started feeling down, it's not so much how they make you feel it's how they make you not feel. These ones are also for adhd brains and help with parkinsons. Please check out their website and reviews they have soo many different supplements that help so many ailments.

I have used this for about 2 years, no problems with my stomach.

Vargas · 04/01/2023 22:29

GP recommended vitamin B12 and D so I take both.

I also take a multi, a fish oil and magnesium.

My hair is thinning a bit so I might add biotin soon.

MairzyDoats · 04/01/2023 22:29

I always take soluble vit C and zinc when I feel like I'm getting a cold and I swear it helps reduce the severity / length. Not a regular supplement taker at all but I've just ordered spirulina and chlorella as I've heard it can help with hair loss. Will update in a month!

DaphneFlower · 04/01/2023 22:31

Multi vits and minerals, vitamin d, omega 3

Vargas · 04/01/2023 22:31

And high dose vitamin C for one or two days if I feel a cold coming on.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 04/01/2023 22:31

Thanks @Aworldofmyown @runningonberocca Sounds like the one I need!

I take magnesium citrate but the digestive effect is good for me as it makes me "go." I imagine if you have no such problem it might have a more diarrhea effect...

DelurkingAJ · 04/01/2023 22:32

Multivitamin (primarily for vitamin D) and magnesium (recommended by DNeice’s consultant for poor circulation which runs in our family - my hands have been noticeably less sore with cold I the three years I’ve been taking it).

Ws2210 · 04/01/2023 22:37

thunderstruckk · 04/01/2023 21:50

Vitamin D (prescribed), Iron, multivitamin tablets, collagen tablets, retinol tablets, cod liver oil tablets and hormone balancing ones (insulin resistance). Looks like a lot written down 😂 I take my turmeric and other similars through juice shots.

What are retinol tablets? Is that like accutane?

Thighdentitycrisis · 04/01/2023 22:38

Magnesium (tiredness and poor circulation)
cod liver oil (joints)

I definitely hear what you are saying - but you also need to know where they are coming from. I haven't looked at your info but Big Pharma doesn't want us taking supplements, they would rather give us drugs.

Supplements are unregulated and research is limited because it doesn't make money so, what I did was some of my own research. I don't take advice at face value. I need to see a number of research items to decide whether or not to take something. If you aren't deficient then taking supplements won't help. If you are; they will.

Some supplements (vit D3 and magnesium) are beneficial to most I think. Most others only, to some. My advice is to not take any ONE lot of advice, look for more evidence. I take a few (many) supplements, so I have stopped some and some I maintain. D3 and Magnesium are the only fixed ones for me.

reluctantbrit · 04/01/2023 22:47

I take Magnesium Citrate but don't have any side effects.

pippapipps · 04/01/2023 22:47

Every day I take vitamin D and K2 spray, vitamin C and zinc, probiotic
Every second or third day I take B12 and spatone

Blinky21 · 04/01/2023 22:48

Iron, because I'm borderline low ferritin and vit D because my GP FIL recommends it

fuckthisforagameofdarts · 04/01/2023 22:51
