What supplements do you take, and why?

I take turmeric for general joint aches, a probiotic for gut health, and a multi vitamin and mineral.
What do you recommend others should try, and have you had any noticeable results?
Just interested in optimising health in these troubling times, and hopefully giving the best chance of not needing medical intervention.

I take quite a lot of supplements. My 'core' ones for years have been a good multi-vitamin (Life Extension 2 a Day - recommended as the best by a nutritionist friend), a high quality fish oil (recommended by a psychiatrist at The Priority to help with depression) which is Omega 3 (as recommended by 2 nutritionists) by Nordic Naturals and vit D3 (Life Extension).

Following a torrid 14 months of long Covid (and additional complications of primary hyperparathyroidism as well as peri-sodding menopause), I also now take vit K and boron (aids absorption of vit D3), magnesium glycinate, iron (I have low ferritin but this has improved massively), vit C (aids iron absorption), Co-Q-10 (recommended by my long Covid cardiologist for brain fog and it made a difference within 24 hours - he says you notice the difference almost immediately or never, it's one or the other) and zinc (to help my immunity). I occasionally add B12 but my levels are quite high so I only need this every so often.

I also take JP's Dream Sleep (magnesium plus other stuff) as this really makes a difference to the quality of my sleep

I'm interested in the co-Q-10 for brain fog. Not heard of it before. Do they sell it as standard in pharmacies/health stores?

An all in one of Vitamin D, Calcium & Magnesium. My priority is the Vitamin D, especially in winter, but calcium also important as I'm 60-something so worry about bone density. Otherwise, I rely on a healthy diet to get all the vitamins and nutrients I need. I really noticed a change in mood when I started taking Vitamin D a couple of autumns ago, and have stuck to it ever since.

I take vitamin D, folic acid, vitamin e, tumeric, magnesium, I should take a multivitamin (but I've run out) and sometimes I take vitamin c and zinc (if someone has a cold).

I wouldn't typically take anything other than vitamin d, but I have a long-term condition which means I don't absorb nutrients properly, so I am deficient in everything.

Vitamin d ( was prescribed to get very low levels up then told to buy over the counter and take for life. Was causing aches, pains, low energy and may have been contributing to low feeling. Those aches and pains are now gone.

Iron prescribed and then told to take regularly. Tried a wellwoman multivitamin. It it gave me horrendous heartburn :(

I think I know the Wellwoman ones you mean. They make me throw up 20 minutes after taking them. Pretty sure I have most of an unused box in the medicine cupboard.

When not pregnant, I take:

vitamin D (not in crazy dose, only 1000iu)
magnesium (but I noticed that since I don't drink coffee, I don't need it this much, so if I'm strong enough to come off caffeine for life, I will reduce the intake to smaller dose)
iron (prescribed by GP)
fish oil

I'm back to eating meat, so stopped taking vitamin B complex.

@LadyOfTheFliessssss awful isn't it?! I bought the 3 for 2 and ended up giving them to my sister. Quite wary of trying others now.

GingerFoxInAT0phat · 05/01/2023 13:24

I bought some multi vitamins which made me throw up.

Have just bought the Wellwoman ones but wary to take them now others have said the same about them!

Ive been prescribed with B12 tablets and iron, but the iron makes me constipated.

My body seems to be hypersensitive to everything.

I wouldn't take them if you might be sensitive to them. My stomach is easy to set off so I get individual vitamins and spread them out throughout the day.

It's horrible. It sounds worse to have heartburn too. At least if you're sick, it's over with quickly.

I'm early 40's with primary aged DC. I've just put us all on a multivitamin gummy (Bassetts), Sambucol and a probiotic (BioKult for me and the chocolate ball ones for kids). I also take the spray Vit D and Zinc from Better You. We've had a run of illnesses recently so it's belt and braces til April!

starstartwo · 05/01/2023 13:50

I spread these throughout the day.

Vettrianofan · 13/10/2023 07:15

Sunvit D3 was recommended to me by my doctor xx

Startyabastard · 09/12/2023 18:38

Cod liver oil for my creaky arthritic knees. I've been noticing a difference and it's a great product and price from Home bargains!

Thank you. Which strength do you take? I can see they do one which only needs to be taken weekly.

ChrissyShenkle · 09/12/2023 22:01

NMN, researched thoroughly its fascinating,

Your supplement regimen sounds like a great way to prioritize your health, especially during these challenging times. Turmeric for joint health, a probiotic for gut health, and a multi vitamin and mineral are all solid choices.
If you're looking to explore additional supplements, you might want to consider trying a Tongkat Ali supplement. It's known for its potential to boost energy and vitality, which can contribute to overall well-being. You can find some of the best Tongkat Ali supplements. Always remember to consult with a healthcare provider before adding any new supplements to your routine.

HerbalTeaAndCake · 02/01/2024 17:52

Vitamin D and Symprove (probiotics) currently. Oh and Evening Oil of Primrose when on my period.
