What do you put on your porridge? I want to cut the sugar.

Started eating porridge but with a sprinkle of sugar like when I was a kid.

Delicious but am trying to lose weight.

Any alternative suggestions to make it tasty but healthier?

I have frozen berries on mine!

Yacon syrup.

Tates like dark caramel but is lower in calories, low in sugar and does not impact blood glucose.

Berries/fruit
Also make with unsweetened vanilla almond milk

Peanut butter stirred through
Frozen berries
Cinnamon and chopped apple

I make my porridge with water, then add a splash of milk when serving. I don't add anything.

Escapefromcolditz · 03/01/2023 10:32

Make it with water and a wee grinding of salt

Namechangeforthis88 · 03/01/2023 10:33

Cinnamon and raisins. Obviously there is sugar in the raisins. Likewise jam.

HappyGoLuckyLuLu · 03/01/2023 10:34

Don't judge as I'd far rather put maple syrup but I sometimes add a bit of choc shot to mine. If you can get unsweetened apple sauce (baby food cartons work) then that's nice stirred through with some
Cinnamon added... still some sugar in there but reasonable healthy

Toddlerteaplease · 03/01/2023 10:34

Sweetner. Piles of it. Probably rotting my insides.

IncompleteSenten · 03/01/2023 10:34

A banana and a squirt of sugar free maple syrup

Spenn · 03/01/2023 10:34

Butter

Sowingaseed · 03/01/2023 10:34

Chopped bananas and raspberries

Decafflatteplease · 03/01/2023 10:35

Tinned pear and sugar

I make mine with jumbo oats, water and salt. Then when it's cooling in the bowl I add a dollop of mascapone. Perfection.

greenacrylicpaint · 03/01/2023 10:37

I cook it with a small amount of choped dried fruit plus a sprinkle of flaked almonds or other nuts or seeds.
still sweet, but contains loads of fibre and other good nutrients as well.

SkaterGrrrrl · 03/01/2023 10:38

Agave. Mmmmmmmm.....

Dogsgottabone · 03/01/2023 10:39

I put all bran on mine and sometimes cinnamon powder.

But the All Bran contains sugar so might not be best for you.

SheWoreYellow · 03/01/2023 10:39

Have you weighed the sugar you are using? You might find that it is barely worth making the change for.

Same.

Brefugee · 03/01/2023 10:40

i make it with oat milk/water and add mixed seeds/nuts. Nothing sweet but if we have cream a splash of that.

Nicewarmfeet · 03/01/2023 10:40

I mix in chia seeds, flax seeds (all ground) banana and cinnamon is lush and very good for you ☺️

ThinWomansBrain · 03/01/2023 10:41

Make overnight oats - the soaking brings out the natural sugar, and it's a superfast microwave zap in the morning.
I add cinnamon - and raisins (probably about 10 per bowl, so not super high in calories)

Agree. 1tsp of honey for example is only 20 calories, and that's what I use on mine.

bluechameleon · 03/01/2023 10:44

I like peanut butter with either sliced banana or tinned pears. Apple and cinnamon is also nice, or grated carrot, raisins and cinnamon (cook the carrot with the porridge).

ShinyPikachu · 03/01/2023 10:46

I'm losing weight right now too and I've just kept to my sugar. Very occasionally I have fruit on it instead but 5g (one teaspoon) of sugar is only 20 calories so it's really not much out of my full day's allowance.
