Why there is absolutely naff all on the telly on New Year's Eve not even a film!

I'm in Scotland so we had Edith Bowman doing the old Jackie Bird stint with Lewis Capaldi and Manran.
Manran were fab.

Lewis is a great singer but the show closed with him doing Before you Go which kinda killed the entire party vibe. Too slow too sad. Even teen DC who loves him turned to me and said "well that was a bit of a downer"!

Wish he'd done a rocking happy singalong song - sounds like Sam down south nailed it!

treadcarefully · 01/01/2023 02:01

Well I enjoyed the Jools Holland show. The Real Thing, Gabrielle and Andy Fairweather Low. All blasts from my past.
Someone said they'd banned drinking but there seemed to be a fair few bottles of wine on some of the tables?

Well I enjoyed the Jools Holland show.

It does spoil it a bit, though, once you know that they recorded it - including the countdown to the bells - a month or two ago!

Not uncommon for TV, I know; but imho, live is the only way to go for NYE.

champagneplanet · 01/01/2023 02:18

Flicked between Sam Ryder and Jools Holland. both were great . Loved Gabrielle, and Justin Hawkins was ace. Prior to that the TV offering was pants. Awful for NYE, some family films or game shows would have been good, we ended up playing board games with the DCs and had Alexa playing party music.

justinhawkinsnavalfluff · 01/01/2023 02:21

Sam Ryder and Justin Hawkins the perfect start to 2023!!!

lollipoprainbow · 01/01/2023 11:24

Why do they always play such crap music to accompany the fireworks though !

Frenulumetta · 01/01/2023 11:35

Totally agree joools Holland is a con recorded months or weeks ago not a real nye at all

U1sce · 01/01/2023 12:43

I thought Sam was better than Justin Hawkins

LlynTegid · 01/01/2023 12:56

TV companies don't think they need to make much effort on New Year's Eve I'd expect. Same as with Saturday evenings, given that is usually when the disgrace called Mrs Brown's Boys is shown.

Maybe they don't want to distract from the visual spectacle?! I agree, though! Rather than just cramming in disjointed little snippets of every song they can find that has the word 'love' in the title, they would be better to find just one great song and play it in its entirety to accompany the fireworks.

I personally wouldn't be in any way averse to that song being ABBA's fabulous 'Happy New Year', although they could probably do with asking ABBA/the holograms/Bjorn Again to re-record some slightly amended/updated verses - especially the bit where they wonder what we'll all be doing ten years in the future in 1989!

I'd also give a strong vote in favour of Dina Carroll's 'The Perfect Year' - beautiful song (the government might need to issue a disclaimer beforehand, though Grin)

I'm not entirely sure about that. Whilst I agree that MBB is a monstrosity (although I heard one critic cruelly referring to it as a 'comedy', which I think might be sticking the boot in just a little too far), loads of people obviously like it enough to watch it. I think the same about the soaps - especially EastEnders (now perfectly renamed by Richard Osman as 'Market Shouting'!) - if I wanted to watch people being angry and aggressive all the time, I'd just go to the nearest city centre on a Friday night and observe the nightlife there.

Indeed, this thread started with people who clearly can't stand the kind of NYE entertainment that the likes of me revel in!!

treadcarefully · 01/01/2023 14:30

I know the Jools Holland one is pre recorded. I just turn over at midnight for the fireworks then turn back. It's really the music and relaxed vibe I enjoy.

Yes to Abba! I know it's cheesy but better then what they played last night.
