What would you do with £1000?

Just say, you came into £1000 but had to spend it and not save it, what would you do with it?

At the moment, buy heating and food.

roseretrox · 31/12/2022 02:54

Aww bless you. I was considering overpaying my energy but this money is the result of a very stressful situation, including having to scrimp and save for a couple of years until resolved. So I was wanting to do something less practical to lift the pressure off!

but I also can’t bring myself to think it’s worth spending on anything thanks to cost of living!

night in a hotel with a lovely dinner and a massage

HerRoyalNotness · 31/12/2022 02:56

take A trip home

DeoForty · 31/12/2022 02:57

As another poster said; a night away with spa treatment and maybe one lovely item of clothing (coat/boots) or some nice skincare.

BlackeyedSusan · 31/12/2022 02:58

Things we need. Maybe an extra treat from the supermarket. Kid's new coat that kid will actually wear. Plus a gazillion name tags in it.

1vandal2 · 31/12/2022 02:59

Pay off the credit card

Sugarfree23 · 31/12/2022 03:14

I'd spent it on something that will keep giving, so new kit for hobby rather than spending on a night away with nothing to show for it.

Hobby 100% depending on your likes, bike, sports kit, camera, musical instrument and lessons.

BarbaraofSeville · 31/12/2022 06:53

Why do you 'have' to spend it now?

If you've had to scrimp and save then this money might be a chance to free yourself from that as saving it until you need it or identify something you want could be a better use of the money than just spending it on not very much.

You could buy non perishable food or stock up on bulk packs of things you'll use a lot of if you see them at a good price as it will make things easier down the line- a kick start to buying in bulk to save money. Likewise getting ahead with your energy bills will free up money later on.

Of course you could spend some of it on a meal out or thing for the house like an air fryer but it would be a bit daft to just spend the money for the sake of it if you don't have to.

whowhatwerewhy · 31/12/2022 07:09

I couldn't just spend it for the sake of it . Not knowing how much more strain the cost of living will put on my budget I would rather have money to fall back on rather than a new anything I don't need .

KangarooKenny · 31/12/2022 07:10

I’d have a bedroom makeover.

Read the OP, you’re not allowed to ave it.

*save

GingerLiberalFeminist · 31/12/2022 07:12

If I can't save it, I'd get something for the house - a rug for the second room or a new garden gate or something like that.

WinterFoxes · 31/12/2022 07:12

upgrade some everyday stuff in the home - really good bed mattress or sofa, or bedding and towels. Or lamps and lampshades (nice ones are always so expensive) And maybe a family outing somewhere you couldn't usually afford.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 31/12/2022 07:12

Gosh that's so boring. When did I get Old?! 🤣🤣🤣

HideyHoe · 31/12/2022 07:21

I would buy shares and stocks.

crisscrosscringle · 31/12/2022 07:23

One/combination of the below:

A round dining table and six nice chairs
Shutters on my front room window
Redecorate my hallway
Good quality double sofa bed
A painting from local artist I have been eyeing up
A long weekend in Cotswolds
Haircut and colour
Botox
Facial
Pedicure

watchfulwishes · 31/12/2022 07:24

I'd get something that would give real benefit, like really good coats or a new carpet or new mattress.

WordtoYoMumma · 31/12/2022 07:29

So the boring sensible bit of me would pay off the credit card. I owe just under £900 and it would be such a relief to not have that hanging over me. Then I'd take the family out for a meal with the remaining hundred-ish.

But if I were being a little more frivolous, I'd buy the three pairs of shoes I've had in my online basket forever , totalling just over £200, I'd buy some new doc marten boots, and a hoodie from Red Bubble. I'd get a few new bits we need for the kitchen, and pay someone to come and clean my entire house.

Then take the family out for a meal 😊

imalreadygone · 31/12/2022 07:30

Hair cut then over pay the energy bill so I don't have to worry about it

twinmum2022 · 31/12/2022 07:36
  • lip filler
  • Botox
  • hair done
  • lashes
  • clothes/shoes

OR a city break somewhere

OR new bits for the garden, bbq, pots ect

CeriB82 · 31/12/2022 07:38

in my dreams id have my tear troughs done.

in reality id whack it on my credit card

CarrieMoonbeams · 31/12/2022 07:46

There's some wallpaper I've had my eyes on forever and a day, it's £105 a roll and I'd need 4 rolls for the one wall. I'd then buy 3 of the 30ml bottles of Jo Malone perfume, they're £55 each and it would be so lovely to have 3 to choose from each day. Then it would be a pair of Ariat Wexford Chelsea boots, about £180 at the moment, and the rest would be for a few lunches out with DH.

Whatever you decide to do OP, enjoy spending it 1000 times over in your head first 🤗

PoseyFlump · 31/12/2022 07:50

This happened to me when I unexpectedly was left £1k in a will. I felt it inappropriate to pay bills with it and wanted somehow to remember the person.

So I bought a puppy. Twelve years later and lots of love and fun, he is currently begging for my morning biscuit I'm having with my tea Smile
