Charity shop wishlists

Does anyone want to share a list of the things they are looking out for in charity shops? Mine is as follows ..
A wooden musical box that looks like a grand piano, preferably with a Spanish dancer painted on the lid. I had one as a child!
A welsh wool cape
Delft Amsterdam houses
Folkmanis hand puppets
Mexican silver jewellery.
Picture books about different destinations ie 'This is London' , 'This is New York' and so on.
A vintage bust of the Queen. I already have Prince Philip.
I have a ceramic statue of Jo from Little Women. Apparently the other girls are out there somewhere too.

You know that saying "no good deed goes unpunished"? It's not true!Grin
I took some donations to the chazza this afternoon and ... there, waiting for me, was one of my wishlist items. An umbrella stand, since you ask. And it fits the space exactly. Hooray.

TribeD · 13/01/2023 22:16

I'm going to take myself off for a day hunting in the charity shops next month.

I'm hoping to find:
new clothes - losing weight and still have a way to go.

A leather bag
tan boots
leather belt
silk scarves (square)
Crystal bud vases
anything kitchen related

I picked up some crystal wine glasses last week 50p each, I can get the same ones from the maker for £95. Absolute bargain!

TribeD · 13/01/2023 22:17

But actually I don't mind if I don't find anything on my wishlist, it's just nice to browse 😀

Theoldwoman · 17/01/2023 03:48

Just got home from finding an item on my wish list.

The Georgian Collection Churchill, 40 pieces all in excellent condition. I have been looking for quite awhile so very pleased!

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 17/01/2023 05:19

I’m on the lookout to replace my late mother’s 1960’s white with black snowflakes Pyrex casserole dish. She, and subsequently I, always used it to make cottage pies, trifles and crumbles. After she died and we cleared her house I kept it and used it regularly. Sadly, it got dropped about a year and a half ago and I’ve meant to replace it since. I’ve seen identical ones on EBay a couple although they have the slightly smaller size more regularly but I’m reluctant to buy one as I worry that it will get broken in transit!!

For those looking

I also inherited her Christmas decorations and have a box of 1960’s glass baubles and a string of 1970’s lights (though the set of lights in the shape of little houses weren’t salvageable)

I have 2 sets of what I call salad plates but, seeing the previous post, suspect they may actually be breakfast plates. One is white Pyrex type with 1970’s orange flowers pattern and the other is earthenware with a flower design on them probably from the late 1970’s/early 1980’s.

We also donated a couple of crates of boxed salad servers, cake knives & slices; display plates and similar items that had been carefully stored in a cupboard probably since she and my late father married in 1963!!

On Saturday, early, a Mint Velvet cami with matching overblouse £7. Can’t wait for the warm weather to wear them.

PritiPatelsMaker · 19/02/2023 18:50

That's brilliant @Beebumble2 Wink

AwkwardPaws27 · 19/02/2023 19:00

@Theoldwoman I hadn't thought of looking for cutlery - I'd love a matching set (using a random mix from 3 or 4 different styles at the moment and have been for over a decade ). Adding that to my wishlist!

I got some excellent condition Julia Donaldson books for DS (Zog for 50p!) this week, and a pair of Whistles jeans for £6 and &Other Stories ones for £4. I'm still losing the lockdown baby weight, 30lb down and just getting into a 12, so these will see me through until I'm back in a 10 hopefully.

Theoldwoman · 19/02/2023 23:47

Good luck finding cutlery, I see it around from time to time.

Failingatthemoment · 20/02/2023 00:51

Random question - I've heard that certain charities send particular ( higher value?) items to other areas so that means less affluent areas get the lower end items. Can anyone tell me if this is the case?

WhereAreMyAirpods · 20/02/2023 08:35

Yeah I've heard this too on several threads on here. I volunteer in one of the biggest charity shop chains and we don't do this. Our chain has a specialist bookshop and a specialist music shop in teh city where I live and we will send them rare books, guitars, sheet music because they will sell it quicker than we can. There is also a manager WhatsApp group where managers can post if they are very short of stock and ask if anyone else can send stuff over. But it's very ad-hoc and not a formalised system.

Other charity shop chains may do things differently though if they think they can make more profit that way.

Aphrathestorm · 20/02/2023 08:53

I got a label on formal coast dress for under £20.

I don't know if that's true / common practice, but I sometimes go to the more affluent areas of my borough to check out their charity shops as the donations they get are often more expensive brands.
My local one has a lot of Primark or supermarket kids clothes whereas a short bus ride away I tend to see more John Lewis, Next etc.

  • my parents were given a coffee and tea set for their wedding in 1962 and they have just given it to me. I would like to add extra plates and cups/saucers. The teapot was broken years ago and I just got one for £15 in a local charity shop. They sell on eBay for around £30-50 so it was a bargain.

I've recently picked up a tiny Pyrex dish for a £1.
A large bag of Silkos for £5
3x paintings for £4, £4, £7
2x vintage recipe books £2 each
10x vintage books (including 1 Ngaio Marsh and a penguin green crime. Total £12
Black vintage (1960s) leather handbag (suede lined) £4
A bag of mixed haberdashery (all vintage) £6
2x large fabric bundles £5, £5

Theoldwoman · 20/02/2023 16:25

You have found some great finds SirSidney and how lucky to be given your parents teaset.

Beebumble2 · 03/03/2023 14:55

Today I popped into a local charity shop where they often get upmarket clothes and price them accordingly, fair enough.
I bought a lovely immaculate cashmere, jumper for £8. When I got home I looked up the label, ‘Barrie’ which is a Scottish knitwear manufacturer and a subsidiary of Chanel. The current cost of the jumper is £700+
Bargain of the century.

PritiPatelsMaker · 03/03/2023 14:56

Bloody hell @Beebumble2! That really is a bargain!

A once in a lifetime find, I think.

NerrSnerr · 03/03/2023 16:56

I was really lucky recently and got some Timberland winter boots in my size that are clearly nearly new for £12. I had picked up some free Timberland boots from someone in the village giving them away on FB a couple of weeks earlier so I bet they both came from the same person.

The other week I found a Sonic the hedgehog t shirt in my son's size which was a great find as he's a massive sonic fan and it was the day of his school disco.

Niftythrifter · 03/03/2023 18:45

@Failingatthemoment I think that one of the charity shops that have a number of branches in my area do that. The closest one to me prices things but item in terms of the same price for tops etc regardless of brand but the brands tend to to be Primark etc. although I did spot a Sandro top however it was really well used and wasn’t my style. The prices reflect the local area it is in and the community it serves. When I go to the branches in more affluent areas then that’s where the labels are, for example I got a Hush silk dress for less than £15 I think. I’ve not bought anything from the other branch in the other affluent area which has had the likes of Ganni and Longchamp leather bags in.

mathanxiety · 04/03/2023 05:39
