Charity shop wishlists

Does anyone want to share a list of the things they are looking out for in charity shops? Mine is as follows ..
A wooden musical box that looks like a grand piano, preferably with a Spanish dancer painted on the lid. I had one as a child!
A welsh wool cape
Delft Amsterdam houses
Folkmanis hand puppets
Mexican silver jewellery.
Picture books about different destinations ie 'This is London' , 'This is New York' and so on.
A vintage bust of the Queen. I already have Prince Philip.
I have a ceramic statue of Jo from Little Women. Apparently the other girls are out there somewhere too.

I love charity shops and try to shop almost exclusively in them. They've taught me a lot about different brands, quality and what suits me. I don't usually have a specific list but I always look for good quality:
Clothes for myself and DC.
Handbags
Homeware. Most of my house is made up of charity shop finds.
Hair appliances
Interesting books
Wool
Nice wicker baskets
Vintage or interesting Christmas decorations

lanesra01 · 30/12/2022 19:24

Interesting thanks everyone ….I’m this thread is making me want to go on the hunt tomorrow!

Gatekeeper · 30/12/2022 19:44

charity shops are like crack to me! my list..

  • wool jumpers pref Merino
  • old cotton sheets. The ones I have on my bed right now are Utility Horrockses cotton twill and are the most wonderful, warm sheets ever. They are probably 80 yrs old and the quality is superb
  • hand made pottery or studio pottery
  • Cathrineholm enamelware
  • danish enamel jewellery
  • pewter plates etc
  • vintage Oor Wullie and Broons annuals
foxlover47 · 30/12/2022 21:04

@Mommabear20 I've just gone down the rabbit hole
Literally , looking these up!
They are proper quirky and cute aren't they

ShornTheSheeep · 30/12/2022 21:39

A tiny Pears soap charm from the 1920s! Been looking for ages but they're quite rare so I've had to cave and buy the only one available out there that I can find.

Wasn't a bargain but meh .. gotta treat yourself where you can!

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 30/12/2022 22:11

@ShornTheSheeep was it the little amber glass charm? If so, 😍😍

ShornTheSheeep · 30/12/2022 22:41

@TangledWebofMincemeatDeception that's the one! They were carried by travelling salesmen who would hand them out to chemists / potential customers etc as advertising gimmicks

Pears were the first company to use a 'celebrity' in their advertising too (Lillie Langtree)

Err Hope you enjoyed that rubbish history lesson 😆

Great thread!

I'm going for a no spend / second hand only 2023 (haven't finalised the rules yet).

Things on my list:
Green and white china.
Red and white china (especially dinner plates).
Summer clothes (as I'm losing weight).
Fabric (including bedding, curtains etc).
Chenille tablecloth.
Books (by authors I already collect).
Cut glass whisky tumblers.
Green stemmed glasses.
Bangles.
Scarves (shouldn't really as I have far too many)!
Wooden cupboard or cabinet.

I'm sure there's more!

IncyWincyGrownUp · 31/12/2022 00:13

I’m after some 80’s ‘breakfast’ plates. Smaller than dinner plates, but bigger than a side plate.

I could go another pyrex lasagne dish too.

londonmummy1966 · 31/12/2022 00:25

I'm looking for vintage floral patterned sugar bowls - getting quite hard to find. DD is an expert at charity shopping. Her finds this year have included

Jack Wills quilted jacket - £5
Unworn Harrods trench coat - £10
Looks unused small brown Longchamp pliage - £20
Lucy and Yak dungarees £2
unworn Ralph Lauren gold leather belt £10

LulooLemon · 31/12/2022 00:36

I'll look out for some of these things!

My list has just one item:

Little Box of Crochet pattern for the mermaid Marina del Rey.

maeveiscurious · 31/12/2022 00:38

I love a good charity shop, I was looking for a mirror but picked up a Edwardian copper planter which looks quite valuable.

My best finds ever were early copies of Tolkiens work

CharityShopChic · 31/12/2022 09:32

Fight you for the Hornsea, @SirSidneyRuffDiamond . 😆

There are lots of people out there who like the quirky offerings of charity shops. The stuff which sells best in our shops is the retro and vintage - not just the clothing but also the floral 70s duvet covers, the coffee sets with the tall pots and garish patterns, 1940s tea sets, artwork - just anything which is a bit different.

Newlifeintherain · 31/12/2022 09:50

I am a charity shop convert.
Have had some really good items in the past few months.
A mixture of clothes and household.
DH actually got a lovely coat yesterday his second in the last couple of months, funnily enough from the same chain just in a different town.
I always have a list of what I would like.
Currently a pair of black knee length boots is top of the list.
No luck so far but the hunt goes on.

MorrisZapp · 31/12/2022 12:30

Where do we stand on used bedding from the charity shop? I bought a pretty duvet cover for a couple of quid and I swear it's like sleeping in a cloud. I have never known softness like it. Can't see me going back to new stuff, though I'm talking pillow and duvet covers, not sheets.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 31/12/2022 12:37

Nothing wrong with that. As long as the fabric is good quality, clean/free of stains and can be adequately disinfected, it’s absolutely fine in my book.

I, like a few others here, have decided that 2023 is going to be no-spend on new items (except for underwear/socks and a small list of things I really need which I will be mindfully buying as and when I come across them), so this thread was a timely reminder of how many lovely things it’s possible to find in charity shops. I’ve already brought my consumerist tendencies quite markedly under control over the past few years, but now I’m ready to make it a lifelong commitment. I’m actually very excited about it!

I never buy new bedding for me and dh's bed (apart from pillows). I have vintage linen or cotton sheets- the oldest being 80 yrs old, wool blankets from 1950's etc. AS long as they are stain free I have no issue with them. Blankets get a country wash in the bath with castille soap and sheets get a boil wash in the machine

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2022 14:14

I'd like some old fashioned soup bowls with one fat handle. Ideally brown or green.

Generally though, I just look for books these days.

TangledWebofMincemeatDeception · 31/12/2022 14:18

@RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie I saw 4 of those recently (a matching set of 2 in 2 different shops) and was so, so tempted! Vintage, beautiful green colour, lovely pattern. I only didn’t buy them because I already have 2 sets of bowls and I have to stop somewhere...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/12/2022 14:21

@TangledWebofMincemeatDeception I still remember the set of 4 that I saw and didn't buy in about 1992 because I didn't want to carry them home! :)

SantaBakula · 31/12/2022 18:35

TeenDivided · 30/12/2022 14:43

@SantaBakula Having your colours done means going to see someone who works out what colours suit you best (some make you look ill or washed out) You come away with a little wallet of colour swatches to remind you. I had mine done years back with a friend for fun. She didn't say much I hadn't already worked out, but it was interesting.

Ah I see , that makes sense , I know I look terrible in green !
