Charity shop wishlists

Does anyone want to share a list of the things they are looking out for in charity shops? Mine is as follows ..
A wooden musical box that looks like a grand piano, preferably with a Spanish dancer painted on the lid. I had one as a child!
A welsh wool cape
Delft Amsterdam houses
Folkmanis hand puppets
Mexican silver jewellery.
Picture books about different destinations ie 'This is London' , 'This is New York' and so on.
A vintage bust of the Queen. I already have Prince Philip.
I have a ceramic statue of Jo from Little Women. Apparently the other girls are out there somewhere too.

@NerrSnerr an EB robin mug just before Christmas is a special gift from the universe! Lovely.

@AdelaideLane that music box is perfect. Unfortunately I'm not in the UK..the search goes on.. I don't think I'm completely dreaming about the bust of the queen. I did get a vintage Philip bust for $2!

Oh no, do they not post abroad or can you access through eBay.com?

Maybe the chase goes on....
My chase is for a vintage red brooch, but not any red brooch, it has to be the same as the one my late grandma wore on her fur coat. I look in all flea markets and charity shops as we visit. I will find my treasure, one day.

I’ve just “had my colours done” and it turns out I need a whole new wardrobe lol

so I need to compile a list of wardrobe staples and start from there ….

any tips for charity shop hunting I should know about as I’m pretty new to it!

Quizzed · 30/12/2022 13:54

I love this thread op!

I'm currently on the hunt for:
Vintage wooden chess set
Art
Art books
Spode Christmas stuff
Vintage Christmas ornaments
Mixing bowl
Vintage wine/champagne glasses
Jeans
First edition Stephen King books (for my mum who collects these)
Vinyl records
Books
Elf monopoly (I do not wish to pay £20 for this but I really want to play it)
I'm always on the look out for home decor.

SantaBakula · 30/12/2022 13:59

I love a good rummage in charity shops.

I am not on the look out for anything in particular at the moment but earlier this year I needed some safety shoes and while on my way to arco to sepen about £60 on a pair I called into a charity shop actually looking for jeans but spotted a almost new pair of caterpillar boots for £15 . Definitely a good bargin !

My usual rule is "will it go with what I already have in the wardrobe?" but if you are shopping to 'had my colours done' then that will be a given. Fill your boots! Get loads of cheap (correct colour) clothes and then get more discerning as you go along.

SantaBakula · 30/12/2022 14:10

@lanesra01 , umm what have you had done with what colours ?

My tip would be go in with a open mind , if you say uou want a navy blue crew neck jumper with a butterfly on it you will be hard pushed to find it, however if you want a blue jumper / hoody/ cardigan snd can buy a butterfly broach you are more likely to find what you want .

Also I have found the big charity shops like oxfam / RSPCA / Heart foundation can be mire expensive than the smaller independent ones.
Town centre shops also tend to be more expensive.
Don't try to bargin on the price if you are only buying one or two things , however if you are buying a lot it may be worth very politely asking if there is a chance of a reduction, especially if its out of season at the time , ie buying shorts now or winter coats in summer

Nsws2015 · 30/12/2022 14:16

@Boystomenslowdanceatweddings have you tried vinted?? I've bought a few on there recently....the other night i danced with excitement as I got terrible trio of terror for £7.50!!!!! Its not boxed and doesn't have the certificate but I don't really care as its for my collection! Now I just have to hope they arrive in one piece (had 2 arrive smashed to smithereens a few months ago as she just wrapped a bit of tissue paper round them and put them in a grey mailing bag 😭) I've just had an alert some more have been listed on vinted.
There's a fab seller on ebay too called uncleflakes3107.

Sorry for derailing the thread!

CharityShopChic · 30/12/2022 14:25

As the username suggests, I am a volunteer in a charity shop. I have a list of things I hope will come out of the bags when I'm sorting stock, or which appear on the shelves of the shop. These are:

Hornsea 70s pottery - preferably the storage jars
Cos clothing in my size
Knitting yarn - preferably 100% wool
nice jigsaws
vintage christmas decorations

Yes we do get first dibs on what comes in but ALWAYS pay the same price as anyone else would pay. No staff discount.

MorrisZapp · 30/12/2022 14:30

Port glasses
Specific cutlery
Jigsaws of American states
A bud vase
American editions of books I already love
Anything with Snoopy on, apart from Primark crap
A particular blouse from Peacocks, I got a few on ebay but I wear them all summer and want every colour they made
Phase Eight summer maxi dress, ditto

Beebumble2 · 30/12/2022 14:31

Love this thread, it’s a shame we can’t all get together with ‘wants’ that we could swap. I always have a mental list, often for friends who collect things.
I’m on the look out for:
Denby plates to replace the chipped two
Crystal glasses
interesting jewellery.

recent I’ve found:
a Victorian ceramic foot bath £2.50 for plants.
Decco silver plated cake forks, in case. £4.99
Coeur de lion bracelet £2

TeenDivided · 30/12/2022 14:43

@SantaBakula Having your colours done means going to see someone who works out what colours suit you best (some make you look ill or washed out) You come away with a little wallet of colour swatches to remind you. I had mine done years back with a friend for fun. She didn't say much I hadn't already worked out, but it was interesting.

CheeseMaiden · 30/12/2022 14:45

I love a good charity shop hunt, I find that I am more likely to find what I’m looking for if I keep a wish list…
set of matching dinner plates- we have stopped buying new crockery and oddly find that the second hand items in our kitchen outlast anything bought new.
fabric and sewing patterns for my sewing stash. Made a door curtain last year from fabric picked up for £7
summer and beach clothes for DD (including rash vest)

GiveYourHeadAWobble · 30/12/2022 14:48

I'm looking out for;

Vintage wool jumpers or cardigans
Cashmere jumper in a colour that suits me
Wide leg or flare cotton trousers for spring
Vintage or unusual Christmas decorations
Vintage or nice quality wine glasses
A bottle stopper
White pure cotton bedding
Leather walking sandals that don't look too horrible (or maybe some Tevas)

WhereIsMyRollingPin · 30/12/2022 14:49

I love a charity shop rummage but only have one thing on my wishlist at the moment. A large flattish square plate, plain white or cream. It's for putting square cakes on. The manageress of my favourite charity shop has promised to keep one for me if it ever comes in.

Slightly off topic but yesterday I took a few donations including a jigsaw puzzle. The shop was busy so the woman on the till left them on the counter for a moment. The customer behind me was delighted to see the jigsaw, asked them to price it there and then and left the shop very happy. A less than five minute turnaround.

AwkwardPaws27 · 30/12/2022 14:58

I was very lucky in the last few months. I don't really need anything else at the moment, but I do like having a wish list!

I needed:

  • a coat for daily dog walks - water resistant, long enough to cover my bum when sitting down on a bench, with a hood, & not too thick. I found a navy Hobbs parka for £10 which is absolutely perfect.
  • a green cardigan or jumper. Found a lovely M&S rollneck in forest green for £5. I'm going to embroider little toadstools and autumn leaves onto it.
  • Christmas gifts for baby DS (as we were doing 50% preloved gifts this year). I found an ELC abacus, a set of Mog the Cat books and a Le Toy Van wooden toy set for between £3-5 each.
Littlepolkadots · 30/12/2022 15:07

What a great thread! I love charity shopping and have an ever changing wishlist
Star Wars toys or T-shirts for DS
Old Murder Mystery novels
Quirky mugs
Mom jeans
Snow globe
Navy shirt dress
I'm always on the lookout for the perfect coat!

2bazookas · 30/12/2022 15:08

I am always looking out for more ;

Red and white spotty china

Small bone china birds (for use in art project)

other materials for art project

jigsaws (very picky)

books by out of print authors I collect

pure linen (clothes, vintage bedlinen, embroidered table cloths etc)

DH-size quality sweaters

clothes in GC sizes (ranging from ski and sports wear to teen girl partywear. The GC's are lifetime afficionados of charity shop wear, toys, games, books etc

quirky stuff for stocking fillers

2bazookas · 30/12/2022 15:16

any tips for charity shop hunting I should know about as I’m pretty new to it!

The most exciting bargains and cheapest prices are found in small often "local" charity shops in small country towns. So don't ever drive past one without going in.

Far better pickings than the mainstream charities with city centre premises

2bazookas · 30/12/2022 15:24

I should never have read this thread; now I'm going to have to look out for stuff I never heard of, like KLM delft houses. New collections loom.......

Anapana · 30/12/2022 15:28

I am in the lookout for danish glass and in particular cobalt blue Holmegaard Viking cups. Niche but you never know 🤣

More mainstream is a nice plain glass vase or Waterford crystal wine glasses

love love love charity shops

@SantaBakula
Not only do the colours suit your skin-tone but, also, they all complement each other. If you stick to your colour palette then everything in your wardrobe goes with everything else. No more "I've bought this fabulous purple blouse but it doesn't actually go with any of my skirts/trousers so now I need to go out and buy a new bottom half ..."

I'm charity shop obsessed and have been shopping in them for 30 years now.

I'm always on the look out for anything Orla Kiely, Whistles, Reiss, Ted Baker or old All Saints (when it was still manufactured in UK) have had incredible bargains over the years.

I collect a particular colourway of Poole pottery and have been doing for years so I get a rush when I find a piece or a bundle.

My best ever bargains ever are as follows:

Le cruset orange cast iron pans x 2 £1.50

Silk aquascutum skirt £1

Kooples suit in my size £5.50

Margiela shirt £1

Austin Reed pinstripe suit fits like a glove £1!

Prada heels £3

Tods loafers unworn in box £5

I have an eye and find it very relaxing to browse. I'm the same with TK maxx I don't find it chaos

Mommabear20 · 30/12/2022 17:56
