Prime drinks - am I missing something?

CaraVann · 29/12/2022 15:14

As a parent of teens, I am aware of Logan Paul, KSI and this drink they are touting (our local post office are selling it at £5 per bottle).
Just caught some news online and see people are going berserk in Aldi stores, trying to purchase this stuff, like their lives depended on it.
It’s just coconut water, flavourings and artificial sweeteners ffs, what is wrong with people?
I know this sort of thing isn’t new (I’m old enough to remember people going crazy trying to buy Cabbage Patch Dolls!) but honestly, I just don’t get it.
I have never bought into this sort of crap, if I need something I will get it when I need it. I certainly don’t need some kind of ‘influencer’ to tell me I’m less of a human being if I don’t go on a stampede and purchase their shit.
And looking at the video clips I see many of these people are not young kids either. I’m sure if dog shit became fashionable these people would break their backs trying to hunt some down lol!
I am honestly baffled by life and human behaviour at times, we have parts of the world where people are starving and drinking putrid water then in the West others going dolally trying to bust a gut tracking down some drink which probably tastes like shit anyhow.
Madness!

You don't get it because you aren't a teenager. It's a fad, like lots of things have been in the past. I couldn't get to my office in the summer because of the hoards of people trying to visit the local shit chippy, but it gave the kids something to do I suppose.

No one is making you feel like less of a person, you're weirdly taking this to heart for some reason.

CaraVann · 29/12/2022 15:34

Lol, I’m not taking it to heart KenAdams, not all teens are like it, my teens certainly wouldn’t queue up for ages to battle to buy a bottle of flavoured water and none of their friends would. There are many adults doing so, if you watch the videos. I just think it’s mad.

Loads of threads on this. Ds2 is well into it unfortunately and queued up early at Aldi to get some.

ouch321 · 29/12/2022 15:56

Ha...

There was a thread earlier today when someone mentioned in passing that their son had got up early to "get Prime" and I took it to mean they had decided to sign up for Amazon Prime.

Have never heard of KSI, Paul guy or any drink called Prime.

Comedycook · 29/12/2022 16:01

I'm baffled too

Mumdiva99 · 29/12/2022 16:05

Well I was there at 8:10.....should have got there earlier as narrowly missed it in 2 Aldi's. There were no berserk people.....just queues at the tills.

I went because my 10 year old has been on about it for ages. He was going to get up early to come but I didn't want to disturb him.

No idea what it tastes like, as I was too late. Lol. We won't pay any more than the already over inflated price. But it's jist a fad he wants in on. Harmless I think. He does understand marketing.....but equally he's 10.

I can't believe I can almost certainly name the bloody chippy you are talking about and it is miles away from me

It isn't just teenagers. I saw the video too and a man in his 50s snatched a bottle out of a child's hand. I actually felt sorry for the poor kid

It is utter madness OP

yahpahha · 29/12/2022 16:27

I got my daughter a bottle of the lime flavour for Christmas, she says it tastes exactly the same as a 59p bottle of Macbee water 😂🤦‍♀️

dementedpixie · 29/12/2022 16:30

My kids are teenagers and have no interest in it. I think people are a bit sad to get caught up in the hype over some glorified water drink

Var57 · 29/12/2022 16:35

Do they drink it or store it in the loft hoping it will become a collectors item?

YouremywifenowTubs · 29/12/2022 16:39

My dd is nearly 9 and a lot of her friends parents were tracking it down for Christmas presents.

Dds best friend is crazy about the stuff, her mum is constantly on the lookout.

Dd thinks it’s bonkers. She said she’d prefer a can of vimto if I was offering pop.

JesusInTheCabbageVan · 29/12/2022 16:41

While I'm not invested in the whole Prime hoo-ha either, I also don't get the need to write snooty posts online about the people queuing for it. I mean, there are all sorts of reasons they might be doing it. Maybe it's because they're financially strapped and can make some decent money selling it on. Maybe it's because this is one low-cost thing that is guaranteed to make their DC happy. Maybe they're up anyway, so it makes no odds if they queue outside a shop for an extra the minutes.

Bit of a stretch to pronounce yourself superior to every single person in that queue. I'm sure you do things that they think are ridiculous as well.

YellowRedBlueGreen · 29/12/2022 16:41

I presume the "adults" climbing over each other for it will be trying to make profits on eBay

beachhutenvy · 29/12/2022 16:52

It's gone bonkers near me. Local shop selling it for £8 and my son walked away. He'd pay up to £5 as he likes it. I agree it's nothing special but I think it's like the emperor's new clothes.

There's 'currency' about having it?

ChangedmynameagainforChristmas · 29/12/2022 16:54

OP It will die a death just like lots of other fads. Have you tasted it ? It is awful. My grandson has been into this stuff for ages now - it's not a new thing. I suspect when Aldi start selling it in bulk the fad will all go away.

TimBoothseyes · 29/12/2022 16:54

I wonder what the overlap is between people making tis of themselves over a bottle of flavoured water now and those making tits of themselves over toilet paper in 2020....quite a bit I reckon.

Ameadowwalk · 29/12/2022 17:05

a) I would be really surprised if people were still going berserk in Aldi stores now because it sold out very shortly after 8am in most places
b) no-one was going beserk in our Aldi, there was a queue going through two check outs in a perfectly ordered and civilised fashion.
c) it’s been around for months, and most DC who are/were interested know when there is stock in Asda which can also be obtained without going beserk
d) as there is more around, hype will tail off, civilisation will not end.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 29/12/2022 17:13

Hmm, in six months' time it will be going for £1 a six-pack in Poundland.

A.The op said she'd seen it on the news, not personally experienced it in her local store.

B. Just because it didn't happen in your local store, it doesn't mean it didn't happen in others.

I don't understand it either op, I've never heard of the drink or it's creators.

bloodyeverlastinghell · 29/12/2022 17:27

I’ve heard of it, some of DSs friends want to try it. I do suspect that some people are buying it hoping to resell. Goes for 15 quid a bottle on Amazon 10 or so on Etsy/ eBay. I suspect they don’t sell many though.

Why would you pander to him? That's absolutely pathetic parenting.

HowDoYouOwnDisorder · 29/12/2022 18:49

@Mumdiva99 I totally get it and would have done the same for DS2

DS1 was never into that sort of stuff, but for DS2 I have bought and queued for various dubious items and merch

it’s a merchant thing really, a way for young boys (I reckon age 8-12 mainly) to get a connection to their idols, KSI and Logan Paul (J think?)

my DS2 was very tempted to pay out to view their boxing match, though at 17 he gets less easily sucked in

if you don’t have boys in this age group who are really into their pop culture it’s hard to understand

i have paid silly money for “Loot Crates” and Pewdipie merch in the past

it makes them feel part of a tribe

CaraVann · 29/12/2022 18:51

I have a 17 year old ds and 14 year old dd, I would not do this, sorry, just wouldn’t.

I think it's more 8-12 year olds who are into this.
My 16yo got to try one courtesy of a friend whose dad managed to get a case and says that Lucozade Sport is better.
