Prime drinks - am I missing something?

As a parent of teens, I am aware of Logan Paul, KSI and this drink they are touting (our local post office are selling it at £5 per bottle).
Just caught some news online and see people are going berserk in Aldi stores, trying to purchase this stuff, like their lives depended on it.
It’s just coconut water, flavourings and artificial sweeteners ffs, what is wrong with people?
I know this sort of thing isn’t new (I’m old enough to remember people going crazy trying to buy Cabbage Patch Dolls!) but honestly, I just don’t get it.
I have never bought into this sort of crap, if I need something I will get it when I need it. I certainly don’t need some kind of ‘influencer’ to tell me I’m less of a human being if I don’t go on a stampede and purchase their shit.
And looking at the video clips I see many of these people are not young kids either. I’m sure if dog shit became fashionable these people would break their backs trying to hunt some down lol!
I am honestly baffled by life and human behaviour at times, we have parts of the world where people are starving and drinking putrid water then in the West others going dolally trying to bust a gut tracking down some drink which probably tastes like shit anyhow.
Madness!

What does it matter to anyone else why people are queuing up for it? If your teens aren't interested, okay, that's fine. They're not better than children who are interested.

Nope. Don't get it. My eldest son is the target demographic for this product and he hasn't mentioned it. I hadn't even heard of it til I googled. If DS1 asked me to buy it and queue outside the store just to get hold of some I would explain why that is ridiculous, not to mention the pricing of it. Kids also need to learn they can't just have everything on cue.

Luckycatt · 29/12/2022 21:31

I didn't manage to get any, but I did go round a few Asda's a while back to try to get some. It was what my 11 year old asked for and to be honest I was so glad he wasn't asking me for a PS5.

This sort of thing always happens, but it's usually some console or phone or other overpriced hyped up stuff that costs hundreds and hundreds and is completely out of reach for most families. Perhaps this is a sign of the times that the 'must have' item is only £2, and there's people on here who've run out to get a £500 PS5 for their kids for Xmas but want to sneer at families for doing the same for somethings that's achievable to almost everyone.

It's probably not any more expensive than a bottle of full sugar coke is at the moment but agree queuing at some unearthly time and from the pictures in the media it looked like people were just scrambling over each other to get at the stuff - no way !

It would royally piss me off if I wanted to do my normal food shop and have to queue for an age because of these idiots. Luckily, I did my Aldi shop last night.

Binley Mega Chippy

According to DD and frie ds the queue was long and the chips were average. They were all 15 and 16 year olds and got there using trains and buses we just let them get on with it . There were probably worse things they could do!!

IClaudine · 29/12/2022 21:59

It is very strange. There must be something hardwired into the human brain that makes some of us suggestible to these sort of crazes, as they are nothing new. Google Tulipmania for example!

RelievedItsOver · 29/12/2022 22:02

For clarity on my post - the teenage fad thing I totally understand. Kids need to fit in, have the latest blah blah etc. I was just as bad with tamagotchis.

The thing that irks is the queuing/scrambling (my parents would never have done anything of the sort) to buy this overpriced bollox. I wouldnt do that for my kids, nor enable that grabby behaviour in them. Me, me, me behaviour - I cant stand that. Plus it probably does taste like flavoured cat piss and at £2 a bottle they can get to fuck.

Hoolihan · 29/12/2022 22:08

I also sort of get tweens/teens being sucked in by this sort of thing but why as a parent would you enable it?? Presumably these kids will grow up to be the adult dickheads who start fights on Black Friday/queue overnight for the latest iPhone/get in debt to buy luxury cars. So meaningless and destructive.

slashlover · 29/12/2022 22:24

Do you think the same about the people who queued up to get the Harry Potter books at midnight? (A fair few of those kids are probably the perfect age to now be the parents queuing for this drink). Or the people who go to midnight showings of films? Or the parents who queued early to get the Buzz Lightyear toy for their kid back in the day?

Is it just because it's a drink you disapprove?

Oblomov22 · 29/12/2022 22:28

I object to all the posts talking about enabling it, as if it's sort of bad parenting. My son has bought a few bottles. Twice. Once at Asda pre Christmas, 3 bottles at £2. Aldi today 3 bottles. today £1.99.

He queued 1/2 an hour before it opened. He barged no one out of the way.

Drunk them himself, sold 2 to close friends who want them, who can't get them, for £3, making £1. No Amazon selling. No business plan. No making a profit. Just the fun of being part of a craze.

It's no different to any other craze that there's ever been, whether it was Hama beads, or Pikachu or anything else . Why is it bad parenting to get your child the thing they want, the latest craze. It's not. I have no interest in what it tastes like. I have no interest in anything and for people to imply it's bad parenting by letting my son buy it, is really hacking me off. Xmas Angry

"these kids will grow up to be the adult dickheads who start fights"

Oh do fuck off dear.

What a load of shit.

I do indeed think the same about these people. Insert drink for x, it doesnt matter. They need to get a life.

DarkDarkNight · 29/12/2022 22:41

My son is 9 and my dad tracked some down for me to put in his Christmas stocking. It’s just a silly little phase, the latest thing like fidget spinners or tech decks. There’s no harm in it.

wesayno · 29/12/2022 22:59

Isn't Logan Paul an absolute tosser? Why is anyone endorsing this shite?

When I was a child, there were similar scenes with the god awful Cabbage Patch dolls, parents queuing through the night and fighting with each other as they scrambled to purchase them. I remember back then thinking what utter madness and I still hold this belief with each and every new fad. I just don’t get it, why bust a gut to get hold of something right this instant because someone, somewhere says it’s THE thing to have.

It was a good lesson for my 12yo today about marketing and what it can be like when you get sucked in.

He’s been going on for weeks about trying it. So this morning I agreed to his pleas and we went to Aldi. He queued for an hour in total. Spent £6. Came home and tried it and said “that’s rank”.

He’s learned a valuable lesson about hype and not believing it, and it’s far more effective imo to learn that way than me just telling him it’s nonsense (as I have been doing).

Because 10 year olds don't think like adults?

ditherydotty · 30/12/2022 00:03

I agree with you @CaraVann
Yes, I'm proud to sneer and judge at the silliness of people who will queue for essentially a bottle of water.

FoxCorner · 30/12/2022 00:10

I judge and sneer at people who spend time judging and sneering at people for buying a £2 drink 😉

SinisterBumFacedCat · 30/12/2022 00:19

I’d never heard of it until a couple of hours ago when I watched a video on Twitter of a grown man in Aldi wrestling a bottle of a small boy. Classy.
