I felt it was very nice and quite touching. The location he chose to record it at was very fitting and it is lovely he paid tribute to his late mother, our lovely late Queen.

I liked the message but thought he seemed rather glum

Shit.
Like his predecessor.

Monkeytennis97 · 25/12/2022 21:35

I thought it was quite political, I liked the message of light. I haven't watched the Queen's speeches in years (probably since the 90s) so can't compare really but I liked it generally.

FunctionalSkills · 25/12/2022 21:36

I really liked it. Surprised at that myself but loved the emphasis on public service and doing good regardless of faith.

Something the matter? Or did you just come here to sneer?

I agree @FunctionalSkills as a teacher it was nice to get a positive mentionSmile

ofwarren · 25/12/2022 21:38

I found it boring, to be honest.
I much preferred the speeches from the Queen.

I agree, I thought the emphasis on public service and the struggles people are facing was very well said. I hope Rishi was watching, but I imagine it would just have gone over his head.

He's 74 years old and at time of filming was about to have his first Christmas without his Mother around, I'm hardly surprised he's a bit 'glum'? He is human after all...

Ifailed · 25/12/2022 21:44

Oh give over
Why, it was vacuous and empty.

goingtotown · 25/12/2022 21:52

Enjoyed it. I feel sad for Charles he's obviously grieving.

tickticksnooze · 25/12/2022 21:58

Made me wish the monarchy would be abolished.

imnotthatkindofmum · 25/12/2022 22:08

Agree with others, it wasn't particularly exciting but happy to hear his reference to public service, I felt it was a super subtle dig at the government tbh. Nice to hear someone rooting for us publicly!

echt · 25/12/2022 22:10

As a republican and atheist thought it was interesting, the focus on the value of public service and volunteers after the months and months of bigging up the private sector by Boris Johnson, often erroneously. The Wales link with William and Catherine was politically spot-on, reminding his audience why he's here, and who's on next, a cementing of the RF. The inclusion of other faiths was apt as was the reference

He did well, and for those who thought he was glum, he's not had much to laugh about and the present condition of the world and the UK is not unalloyed fun. The message of hope and light was well-chosen.

Not bad at all.

echt · 25/12/2022 22:11

Cannot think how that first paragraph was meant to end. Meh.

Holihobbies · 25/12/2022 22:14

Thoughtful and well planned. For all faiths and those of no faith, very appropriate given the recent census results !

Spambod · 25/12/2022 23:04

Short and sincere. I liked it. Setting his stall out as defender of all faiths and an emphasis on community and public services. Whether you agree with his politics or not he is more political than the queen and is forthright in his views which we saw today. I personally don’t approve of him being political necessarily due to his role but I get why he is the way he is.
in practical terms it is not possible to abolish the monarchy so I am always interested to know how people think that would work.

ZenNudist · 25/12/2022 23:08

I felt it was pretty much perfectly judged.

Left me feeling that I trusted him as head of state. Gave me a good feeling about William and Kate coming up behind him and Camilla. I thought Camilla came off very well. Illustrated the point of the service done by the RF. Perfect to pay tribute to public sector workers. Seems like his heart is in the right place and he appreciates the problems faced by ordinary people.

student86 · 25/12/2022 23:24

I like Charles but for the first time ever I felt a bit 🤔 watching one of the most privileged people in the world talking about people going through hard times etc.
I wouldn't want his life but the royal family just seem so unnecessary to me know.
I also felt embarrassed watching the little people waiting outside the church on Christmas Day to fawn over them.
I'm not sure if it's because i'm the same age as William so know he's in a more senior position it seems strange to me that people bow and curtesy to him just because of the family he was born into.
Kate looked bloody amazing today though! Like a really cool Robin Hood 😁

student86 · 25/12/2022 23:26

I obviously mean now and not know in my post. No idea how I done that twice Blush

I liked it. I wonder if he was a "one take Windsor" like his Mum?

I liked the acknowledgement of the difficulties people are facing, the mention of all the public servants.

I liked his theme that light can be found in service to others (it's a bit of a personal motto/mantra)

I also liked his acknowledgment of other faiths.

His Mum's speeches always left me with a lump in my throat. This didn't. So not the same emotional tug.

A little bit of history there today.

I thought the inclusion of the Prince and Princess of Wales was a bit odd. Didn't flow as well as the rest.
