So what did you think of the King’s first Christmas speech?

I felt it was very nice and quite touching. The location he chose to record it at was very fitting and it is lovely he paid tribute to his late mother, our lovely late Queen.

That is particularly important when it stands in direct contrast to the gross corruption and incompetence

really? I liked the Queen but direct contrast to corruption? paying people off, bags of Qatari cash, lack of transparency over their finances.

Indeed, not to mention Andrew's Epstein connections.

An incompetent government isn't cover for the existence of a RF. If we had a competent one, would people consider them redundant?

I never watched the queen's speeches, nor did I think she was lovely.

Why comment then

Erm you asked for people’s opinions? Are only opinions of people who liked the speech allowed?

That comment wasn’t about the speech. It was sneering at what I said about the late Queen, who happens to be deceased. Not nice.

If you don't want wide ranging comments then keep these threads to the Royal Family board!

Nah it’s just people sneering. My thread was about the King’s speech not anything else.

Saying "our lovely late queen" (your OP) will of course invite comment on whether people felt she was "their" queen or if she was indeed lovely.

I have no comment to make on anyone personality, just the institution of the monarchy.

criticising the latter is not sneering, well unless you lack critical thinking.

Wauden · 26/12/2022 10:33

I thought that it was excellent and genuine. He referenced his mother's speeches well and that was wise as people are thinking about them.

The strong emphasis on volunteering and public sector workers was heartening and the King is clearly well informed about what goes on.

I volunteer and know lots of people who give hours of time freely for the sake of others.

He is clearly a very thoughtful person who cares about people and the environment.

BiggerBoat1 · 26/12/2022 10:34

I thought it was excellent. Just the right tone. I liked the way he talked about public services and acknowledged the tough times we are all facing. Judged it very well. He's a good man.

Blossomtoes · 26/12/2022 10:38

Paq · 26/12/2022 08:30

There's something obscene about a man, with multiple large residences, masses of land ownership, who profits from legally sanctioned inequality and exploitation of feudal subjects, lecturing us about public service and glorifying food banks. It makes my stomach heave.

He didn’t lecture at all. He’s got my respect because he puts his money where his mouth is. All the donations when the Queen died have gone to a charity to help people pay their heating bills. He added a personal donation and also made one to a food bank charity. Meanwhile the best the PM, who’s about twice as wealthy, can manage is a £100k gift to his already obscenely wealthy public school.

I’m liking the new monarchy. There’s a very vocal minority who would slate him whatever he did.

Paq · 26/12/2022 10:41

But, @Blossomtoes, the difference is if you don't like the PM, you can vote him out 🙂

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 26/12/2022 10:42

Never watched it, could not care a shiny shit what he has to say

What’s that got to do with what I said?

anyolddinosaur · 26/12/2022 10:48

It was a good speech, a reminder that in a dark world there is still kindness, compassion and hop. At Christmas, if at no other time, most people remember that and the world is better for it. Those who dont are sad and twisted.

chary · 26/12/2022 10:49

Perhaps he had some left over cash in one of his bags?!

greenhousegal · 26/12/2022 10:52

It is all staged. Word perfect, rehearsed, written largely FOR him by speech writers (with his input maybe!), setting, tone and so on.

Yes I am a cynic, and always will be.

So it was a good speech, but like many lectures speeches from our "betters" can be hollow. And back they go to their luxury lives. Platitudes abound I think.

MisssHavisham · 26/12/2022 10:56

I saw Prince Edward in the VT but not Anne, who is meant to be the hardest working royal !
I thought it was short (good) but lacked the content that the Queen had.

Anne was shown, but very briefly.

Whatwouldnanado · 26/12/2022 11:20

I thought he sounded as though he was getting over a cold. Content and location spot on. Wish more of our politicians have his intelligence and broad view. I loved the Queen and wish someone would publish her previous speeches.

Then may I respectfully suggest that next time you see a thread title that obviously holds no interest to you whatsoever that you immediately scroll on to the next one rather than click on it.

I'm Irish, in Ireland and just accidentally saw the King's address because it came on after the ballet.
I had never seen the Queens speech.
Anyway. I liked it. I liked how he spoke about his visit to Bethlehem. He obviously has a string Christian faith and love of Jesus Christ. I can relate to that as I'm Christian too.
I liked his dig at the government by honouring everyone who's on strike.
I also enjoyed the carols and the little video clips of other members of the royal family out doing their good works.
Andrew and Harry we're conspicuous by their absence.
But his tie and pocket square didn't match . Where was his stylist.

Blossomtoes · 26/12/2022 12:20

Matchy matchy is very last century @gabsdot45. I’m sure his valet knows what he’s doing!

The viewing figures were up on the Queen's speech last year - 10.7 million for Charles, 8.96 for Queen Elizabeth last year.

So the vast majority, 50 million, didn't watch it.
