I felt it was very nice and quite touching. The location he chose to record it at was very fitting and it is lovely he paid tribute to his late mother, our lovely late Queen.

@student86
I like Charles but for the first time ever I felt a bit 🤔 watching one of the most privileged people in the world talking about people going through hard times etc.

He can't really win, can he? If he talks about it, it's embarrassing because he's not poor. If he doesn't talk about it, he's out of touch.

He visited a food bank and after talking to them and listening to their problems, he arranged to buy and distribute 800 fridges and freezers to help them store their donations which they were having to turn away. He's forwarded the donations made over the Queen's death to a charity to help people pay their heating bills.

I thought it was dull and the vast majority of his subjects wouldn't relate to it at all.

asblindasabat · 25/12/2022 23:43

But nobody will beat the Queen’s speeches. I’ve Never been overly saddened by the death of a public figure, but the Queen’s death did really sadden me. God rest her soul.

Did anyone else think his suit seemed a bit ill-fitting? And idk what the one button (out of three) done up was about, I thought it was just the bottom button you were supposed to leave open?

No idea didn’t pay any attention to it.

The Queen wasn't a great public speaker but she just had a knack of saying things perfectly. Just so reassuring.
And actually something happened yesterday and I was fed up and ready to call Christmas off (drama llama here! 🙃), when I saw a snippet of one her speeches - When life seems hard, the courageous do not lie down and accept defeat; instead, they are all the more determined to struggle for a better future" . So I had a good talk to myself, @asblindasabat, and I uncancelled Christmas and made it as good as I could.
Oh, I luffed the Queen. 😪❤ I hope she was proud of me!

The queen was amazing. I had so much respect and admiration for her.

I enjoyed it. I never really cared for the Queens speeches and I didn't watch them unless I was with family who wanted to watch it. I thought he would copy her style and make a speech at a table with specially selected photos, but I felt like it was different enough to put his own stamp on the tradition.

Get what you mean. Although I would have liked to have seen him at a desk with photos of his mother and father.

Bravo Charlie, perfectly pitched.

Haydugee · 26/12/2022 00:51

I felt it hit the right note and was pretty touching. I do however still miss our lovely Queen 😔

I never watched the queen's speeches, nor did I think she was lovely.

I thought he did a good job.

Something the matter? Or did you just come here to sneer?

Erm you asked for people’s opinions? Are only opinions of people who liked the speech allowed?

Furries · 26/12/2022 03:01

I wasn’t expecting to, but I quite liked it. Aside from anything else, I think he’s a good “speaker”.

Am pleased he highlighted all of those working in public-serving roles.

And it was great to see him r talking about all (or no) faiths. I’ve not always been a fan of his, but it’s definitely not a new thing that he seems to completely understand and welcome the many different faiths in our country. I’m an atheist, so it was kind of nice to get a mention.

All being said, it was still slightly odd to not hear the Queen’s familiar voice.

HamBone · 26/12/2022 04:45

It wasn’t amazing, but you could tell that he was trying to relate to people and what they’re going through.

He’s not the national symbol that the Queen was, but I think he now recognizes that he’s insanely privileged and was trying to highlight the difficulties that other people are facing-plus I wondered whether mentioning public sector workers was a political statement, I.e. they deserve a pay rise?

GoingtotheWinchester · 26/12/2022 04:50

@Spambod why is it impractical to abolish the monarchy? Perfectly practical thing to do - options aplenty that are democratic and modern. Ireland is an excellent example.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 26/12/2022 04:59

I hate to nit-pick, but I believe the OP asked for thoughts on the King's Christmas address, not thoughts about the monarchy.
BTW, Queen Elizabeth was lovely and a wonderful queen.

@Mumtobabyhavoc Quite agree. I thought it was a good speech. The poor man is still grieving.

Nancydrawn · 26/12/2022 05:22

I was skeptical at first but thought it was really rather wonderful.

Oblomov22 · 26/12/2022 05:23

Thought it was fine. The carols were lovely.

Yes, the carols really were lovely.

hattie43 · 26/12/2022 05:46

I really enjoyed it . I'm seeing Charles as a compassionate man who has a grasp of current issues . I always felt Royals lived in a gilded cage unaware of what is happening outside but I get the feeling not only that he knows but that he cares .
