Help, lent our house to friends daughter over Christmas and Alexa has just shown they were playing the music full volume at 3am

Friend is seriously ill so her family can’t stay at their house this year so have lent their daughter our house for 4 days as favour.

Just seen on Alexa they’ve been playing full volume rave music at 3am, we live in a terraced house.

DH is stressing, I’m not really about state of house but I am about neighbours. Think I can only take something around when we’re back to apologise about noise.

WWYD?

@Blossomtoes Spying on them? Are you actually defending these pisstakers?? WOW

SchnauzerEyebrows · 24/12/2022 08:22

@Blossomtoes So you're saying that when Alexa notified OP that loud music was being played at 3am, she was supposed to ignore it in case it looks like she's spying on them?!?!?! This is unbelievable!!!!!

N27 · 24/12/2022 08:23

Having a problem party would suggest to me they invited other people in too?

DosCervezas · 24/12/2022 08:23

Blossomtoes · 24/12/2022 08:18

Isn’t it? I can’t imagine lending someone my house and then spying on them. Very 1984.

Yes there is this. But 1) I'd never lend anyone my house no matter the circumstances.
2) I'd never have a house with Alexa, CCTV / ring bells and everything else people think is normal now.
I even disable all mic permissions on my phone ( except actual calling!).
I'm not paranoid, I just don't like being under surveillance!

I don't think anyone is defending them. But it's super weird to graciously lend out your house and then check what they're up to via alexa. That's spying, what word would you use??

NCNCNCYEP · 24/12/2022 08:24

What, so not only the volume level but they asked Alexa “is it ok to have parties in other peoples houses?” 👀

No they aren’t, don’t be ridiculous, they are just commenting that it’s very dystopian, which it is. It’s a bigger point.

I don’t think you can reply on your friend to deal with this OP, especially given their situation. Can you really not call this woman yourself? There must be someway to disable Alexa and for them to deal with lights and heating manually, surely?

Yabado · 24/12/2022 08:25

Can’t you control Alexa via the app on your phone
so if she switches it on you can switch it off via the app

thewinterwitch · 24/12/2022 08:25

No good deed goes unpunished.

The father sounds pretty wet and lackadaisical, himself.

Youngatheart00 · 24/12/2022 08:26

No, I’m not defending the people playing music at 3am. It’s the fact an AI device ‘alerted’ the OP to this (rather than an human neighbour complaining!) and all of the subsequent records that can now (and are!) be located which means OP has a picture of their night.

As it stands the neighbours might not have been disturbed by it at all!!

DomPom47 · 24/12/2022 08:28

I cannot believe how some people return the generosity of others actions. Simply wow! You have done such a lovely thing and they well are just unbelievable.

SchnauzerEyebrows · 24/12/2022 08:28

@Sparklfairy 🤦🏼‍♀️ So Alexa notifying OP of loud music playing at 3am is her 'spying on them?!' Hmm Please explain

It's a terrace house. Highly unlikely the new neighbours were not disturbed.

MaggieFS · 24/12/2022 08:29

Who is the friend doing the checking?

Sparklfairy · 24/12/2022 08:29

SchnauzerEyebrows · 24/12/2022 08:22

@Blossomtoes So you're saying that when Alexa notified OP that loud music was being played at 3am, she was supposed to ignore it in case it looks like she's spying on them?!?!?! This is unbelievable!!!!!

It didn't notify her.

She would have had to open the alexa app and tap through no less than FIVE menus to check what they were up to.

Thats deliberate and its spying. And it's fucking weird. Just don't lend your house out if you're inclined to do this!?

SchnauzerEyebrows · 24/12/2022 08:30

@Sparklfairy That's not what OP said. She said she was notified. My Alexa notifies me when music is played loudly or in the middle of the night (which is very rare)

MaggieFS · 24/12/2022 08:32

I would hope the new neighbours would be pretty understanding as long as it doesn't happen again and it's explained to them. They are probably dreading what they've moved in next door to, but will be ok when they hear that's not their actual neighbours!

Blossomtoes · 24/12/2022 08:32

Note to self - always unplug Alexa in a holiday cottage.

Yabado · 24/12/2022 08:34

Alexa controls all my lights and lamps and my cctv and ring doorbell
I can still switch on my lights and lamps if Alexa is off

you can just switch off Alexa on the app and control the volume

Sparklfairy · 24/12/2022 08:35

I'm not sure I believe that's a real setting on alexa, but if it is, why turn it on?

Why the fuck would you have that setting on if you weren't checking up on someone? I'd know if music was playing in the middle of the night, because I'd be asleep next to alexa.

The point is don't lend your house out to people you feel you have to check on or have to put a imaginary notification setting on for.

Or in other words, don't lend your house out to people you don't trust.

Paq · 24/12/2022 08:36

Can't you just phone CF and talk to her?

DashingWhiteSergeant · 24/12/2022 08:36

Disconnect Alexa, and let them use the switch for lights.

FairlySane · 24/12/2022 08:36

The people temporarily staying in the house asked Alexa if it’s ok to have parties in other peoples houses ? Why would they do that ? That seems odd………

taurussally · 24/12/2022 08:38

This is beyond creepy.

I don't understand why you didn't just ask your friend for their daughters number. You didn't need to involve them!
