Mine is White Christmas cos when Bing starts whistling it really gets on my nerves!! I know it's a classic blah blah blah but it's so simpery. Anyone else a Grinch about a certain Xmas song?

I think the Band-Aid line 'Tonight thank God it's them instead of you', is basically referring to people's blasé attitude to something that's not affecting them. Surely?

Yes I always thought it meant be bloody thankful it's not happening to you when you say your prayers tonight.

Last Christmas
&
All I Want For Christmas

Any dirge by sanctimonious cliff. If he sang me the winning lottery numbers I'd still hate it. Sue barker had a lucky escape, imagine that emanating from the shower room?

Fairytale of New York. The lyrics are vulgar and depressing and I can't bear the way everyone shouts it out.

Second worst is Wonderful Christmastime. It sounds like he's making it up as he goes along and trying out all the sound effects on his keyboard.

RocketIceLollie · 24/12/2022 09:09

They all get on your tits after a while but for me the most grating is definitely Mariah's song....I'm also not a big fan of the fairytale of New York.

ReformedWaywardTeen · 24/12/2022 11:49

In defence of Power of Love, Holly Johnson said the record was never intended as a Christmas song. What happened was the record label knew the band had had a great year in the charts, shot a biblical looking video and put it out for release in time for Christmas.
It's why it doesn't sound like a traditional, sleigh bells and lines about Holly and such, Christmas record. It does give a good alternative to the saccharin ones though and was played at my wedding last year, in June as it's a personal fave song.

FuzzyPuffling · 24/12/2022 14:57

My favourite is Mike Oldfield's "In Dulce Jubilo". I love that one!

LetsGoFlyAKiteee · 24/12/2022 15:24

I dont think East 17 one was meant to be a Christmas one either. From what remember it was written after his brothers suicide then someone decided to take it down the Christmas route and add bells etc to it.

Simply having a wonderful Christmas time.. ding dong ding dong. Ahhhh

CaptBuckyOHare · 24/12/2022 15:40

Christmas Lights by Coldplay. Get your miserable dirge the fuck off my radio, Martin!

(Tbf I dislike Coldplay year round, not just at Christmas 😁)

Nagado · 23/12/2022 15:56

Anything by Cliff Richard. He gives me the creeps and I can’t bear to watch him swinging his arms about from side to side while a choir stands around him, warbling, and a random child holds a candle. There isn’t a video he’s done that wouldn’t be improved by Jarvis Cocker coming along and getting his bum out.

🤣🤣🤣 Couldn't agree more!

Santa Tell Me has terrible lyrics. It isn’t up to Father Christmas to sort out people’s boyfriends.

The problem with Christmas songs is people release any old shit but because it has some reference to Christmas, it gets played every year.

Funkyslippers · 25/12/2022 15:32

Band Aid but can just about tolerate the original. The 3 other versions are pure shite especially the Stock Aitken and Waterman one in about 1990 with Jason Donovan and Matt Goss looking all serious singing the Bono line

Funkyslippers · 25/12/2022 15:39

Justin Bieber seems to have put his whiny voice to a few Christmas songs over the years. But then his voice could ruin any song, even his awful originals

Funkyslippers · 25/12/2022 15:40

I also hate the Kylie version of Santa Baby. She's trying hard to be Madonna, who did it so much better

AndStand · 25/12/2022 15:43

Fairytale of New York.
Horrible lyrics.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 25/12/2022 16:01

Utterly bloody Mariah.

My favourite is Mike Oldfield's "In Dulce Jubilo". I love that one!

Me too! It's never ever played on the radio (or maybe I'm just missing it). I wonder why?

thesnailandthewhale · 26/12/2022 21:22

The Kylie version of It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year ... her voice sounds terrible

Sloth66 · 26/12/2022 22:13

Band Aid. It hasn’t aged well, some lyrics are tone deaf

Badbadbunny · 27/12/2022 19:18

Exhausteddog · 23/12/2022 12:28

I like Mariah Carey all I want for Christmas
And Last Christmas
And Driving home for Christmas.

But dislike Slade, wizard, the Paul McCartney/Wings one, Elton and Ed Sheeran and all the Cliff ones. He's released another Xmas album this year. When will someone tell him to put a sock in it?? Surely he's got enough money by now!

Cliff reached number 2 in the charts with his Christmas release, so lots of people still want to listen to him and buy his records.
