What do you call the main living space in your house?

The one where you might have comfy seating, the TV, the place the family gathers to relax etc.
And roughly where are you?

We use living room. Hertfordshire.

Living room - SE London

Svalberg · 22/12/2022 23:52

It's the back room here, occasionally the TV room

Bogglebrain · 22/12/2022 23:54

Living room but growing up I think we called it the lounge.

DH calls it the sitting room which for some reason really sets my teeth on edge.

mamabear715 · 22/12/2022 23:55

Front or living room. Even though, as PP's, it's all open plan!
Definitely not lounge. I hate that word but forgot about it until now, or I'd have put in the 'what-words-don't-you-like' thread! :-)

HaggisBurger · 22/12/2022 23:57

Sitting room - London. Though it was the living room growing up in Scotland. Not sure when / why changed.

Always disliked lounge no idea why

HaggisBurger · 22/12/2022 23:58

Anyone say the parlour??? 😂

FatGirlSwim · 22/12/2022 23:59

Lounge. Wales.

NewNameForXmas · 23/12/2022 00:02

Sitting room (Berkshire) but we have a Front Room as well. At home in Dublin we had a sitting room and a back room. Kitchen diners in both.

GarlicBreadItsTheFuture · 23/12/2022 00:10

Sitting room - I am in London now but grew up in the North East where my parents would have called it the lounge which I always hated. We also have a family room which has sofas, TV and the X Box.

Dancingdragonhiddentiger · 23/12/2022 00:18

Southerner - Living room

Runnerduck34 · 23/12/2022 00:19

Growing up it was the front room.
Now it's the sitting room as DH is posher than me!

saraclara · 23/12/2022 00:23

Living room. Because that's where we live. (East Midlands born and bred, moved to the south east decades ago)

Lounge is posher, sitting room is surely only used by older ladies with lilac hair?

My Yorkshire in-laws said ' the room' too. I never gave it a thought until this thread.

BruceAndNosh · 23/12/2022 00:24

I call it "a bit of a tip"
I'm living on the edge of chaos

mamabear715 · 23/12/2022 09:38

Oh, me too, @BruceAndNosh
Everyone running around cleaning for Christmas.. why? It's going to get covered in wrapping paper, sweetie wrappers & tinsel!
I am REALLY enjoying being a slob. :-)

pelargoniums · 23/12/2022 09:41

Me, south-east: sitting room
DP, Yorkshire: living room

MummersMumming · 23/12/2022 09:42

I say living room, DH says front room. Growing up my parents always called it the lounge (much to the despair of my grandmother who would always say "no darling, it's the sitting room. Lounges are for hotels and airports")

ForTheLoveOfSleep · 23/12/2022 09:43

Front room - Devon

The house - Sheffield (husband)

MajorCarolDanvers · 23/12/2022 09:46

Sitting room or living room

Giggorata · 23/12/2022 09:49

We live in a ex shop, so it's the Shop Room, otherwise it would be the Family Room.
What would be our drawing room, we call the Parlour (with tongue in cheek.)
Originally from Kent.

notyourmam · 23/12/2022 10:01

I'm from the south east. I was raised to say sitting room (definitely not living room or, even worse, lounge - my mother was a snob) but for some strange reason I seem to always say front room now. No idea where I got that from. It's at the back..!

OhGingleBells · 23/12/2022 10:25

We have a sitting room and a drawing room.

Had a front room growing up which was fine as it was actually at the front of the house!

Originally from Essex.

Thinkwicebeforeyouleavemylife · 22/12/2022 22:15

The living room (me) and the front room (dh).

We live in Leeds but I'm southern and he's from the east mids.

This is outing if anyone knows me 🤣

I'm from London and i say 'front room'. I always thought it was a working class thing.

My m-i-l is hoity toity working class, so my husband says 'lounge'.

Tallulasdancingshoes · 23/12/2022 18:34

Living room - from the midlands.

Definitely misread the first part of that first sentence 😂

Front room - Northamptonshire, it is at the front.
Parents house, we called it the house, though that wasn't at the front
