What do you call the main living space in your house?

The one where you might have comfy seating, the TV, the place the family gathers to relax etc.
And roughly where are you?

We use living room. Hertfordshire.

Lounge - Wiltshire but I'm not from here originally.

QueenBeex · 22/12/2022 22:42

Living room - east anglia

FirstnameSuesecondnamePerb · 22/12/2022 22:42

Front room.
I'm originally from London, Dh from Hertfordshire. It's been the front room in every house we have lived in, even if it's at the back!

zighead · 22/12/2022 22:42

Lounge. I am north west based.

quietnightmare · 22/12/2022 22:45

StarDolphins · 22/12/2022 22:20

I say front room (even though it’s at the back)🤣

Ahhhh I say this too

Ikeameatballs · 22/12/2022 22:47

Living room. North east

crisscrosscringle · 22/12/2022 22:47

Living room/ Front room

We have a back room too but that's just back room never living room!

Both from Essex, not posh!

crisscrosscringle · 22/12/2022 22:48

Beebumble2 · 22/12/2022 22:33

Sitting room - grew up in London and have always called it the same, wherever I’ve lived.

I'd say sitting room was posh!

Abcdefgh1234 · 22/12/2022 22:49

The kitchen. Because we have bug open plan kitchen/sitting room there. I call it the kitchen because we do have another living room which i rarely use. All family sitting, dining, watching tv in the kitchen (there is tv and toys rack there aswell)

NewToWoo · 22/12/2022 22:50

Living room, front room or TV room. We have a smarter back living room that is called the music room or the quiet room as it has no TV in it.

jmh740 · 22/12/2022 22:51

Front room. When we lived in a terrace and used the middle room rather than the room at the front of the house it was the back front room Vs the front front room

BabyFour2023 · 22/12/2022 22:52

Kitchen.. it’s huge and has a separate “living” area.

We also have a snug but it’s mainly DH and I that use that at night once the DC are in bed. DD goes in with friends too but we don’t tend to use that space as a family often. The lounge rarely gets used.

Border of Sheffield / Derbyshire

TheSmallAssassin · 22/12/2022 22:52

I say living room now, but we used sitting room at home when I was growing up. I remembered the other day that we said settee instead of sofa, too. (I'm from the South East)

17CherryTreeLane · 22/12/2022 22:52

We call it the family room, and have a separate lounge, which is less used.

Hiyawotcha · 22/12/2022 22:52

Sitting room. South east England.

EssexCat · 22/12/2022 22:53

Sitting room (currently Essex but orginally West Country)

LucyWhipple · 22/12/2022 22:54

Sitting room. Calling it lounge growing up would have received the same reaction as saying toilet or pardon…and those habits are hard to break. I think my dc mostly say lounge if talking to friends though - we’re south east

PurpleButterflyWings · 22/12/2022 22:54

Lounge. Midlands.

Fifthtimelucky · 22/12/2022 22:54

I've always called it the sitting room.

Born and brought up in the West Country but now live in the South East.

Tulipvase · 22/12/2022 22:56

Living room and sitting room are interchangeable here.

Would never say lounge.

MrsMitford3 · 22/12/2022 22:56

Victorian semi so we have front room and middle room.

Front room is more me and middle room is DH and football/rugby/cricket etc
We do find common ground sometimes...

we are home counties

trulyunruly01 · 22/12/2022 22:57

Living room
Or, since we are now open plan, "over there".

It's a strange thing. My mother referred to hers as the front room even though it was upstairs and overlooked the back garden.
And my friend refers to hers as the lounge even though she has no lounging furniture, only a shitty hard-backed 3 piece suite which gives you sciatica after ten minutes in it.

Lysianthus · 22/12/2022 22:58

Drawing room. No, it's the sitting room!

SenecaFallsRedux · 22/12/2022 22:59

We call it the family room. Southern US. We also have a more formal room that we call the living room, but it is hardly used.

dudsville · 22/12/2022 23:01

I like sitting room, living room and lounge as they're all so apt.
