What do you call the main living space in your house?

The one where you might have comfy seating, the TV, the place the family gathers to relax etc.
And roughly where are you?

We use living room. Hertfordshire.

Morning room and drawing room

OppsUpsSide · 22/12/2022 23:03

‘In there’ or ‘downstairs’, which all means anywhere but the kitchen.

Clawdy · 22/12/2022 23:06

Lounge. North west.

Cherryblossoms85 · 22/12/2022 23:06

Sitting room, but who cares really.

TheChosenTwo · 22/12/2022 23:07

We call it ‘the front’. As in, “let’s go and sit in the front to have a drink”.
saying that, we mostly use our kitchen diner as there’s plenty of seating and space in there for lots of people and we spend most of our ‘down time’ in there. And that’s just ‘the kitchen’. Strangely, it’s not called ‘the back’ 😂

Gracelynn · 22/12/2022 23:08

The main room, or downstairs room (as other than kitchen and a small toilet is the only space downstairs. We do most things their appart from sleep. But my husband has an ongoing joke that we have a palor 'or secret good room'. A recent morning as he helped himself to porriage "I'll take tea in the palor darling" .

i grew up in bigger houses and calling it the the front room, but we also had a living room, which was kept for visitors and my Dad worked in it (untill they decided he needed a office more than we needed a play room) and dining room. I wonder how mum had time to clean then all. But i am sometimes almost pleased we can make do with one room for all that my parents did accross 4! Anyway that was glasgow. My husband's family called it lounge and he grew up in Fife.

Living room here but my parents call theirs the sitting room

Thisbastardcomputer · 22/12/2022 23:17

The sitting room.

I have my own room, it my very lovely conservatory, we had a proper roof put on it, it's totally decorated to my taste, me and the dogs watch tv in there in the afternoon. If I'm running a bit late, they queue up at the door.

IDontWantToBeAPie · 22/12/2022 23:27

We had three in the house where I grew up, the living room, the extension lounge and the Tiger Woods room.

God knows why. Now I live in a flat and it's the living room and kitchen and my office 😂

Family room…that’s the large extension that’s created an open plan living room meet dining room meet kitchen and we spend the most time in that family room. We hardly use our living room!

emptythelitterbox · 22/12/2022 23:37

Lounge Australia
Family room or theater room US
Living room was the posh front room kids weren't allowed in.

tabulahrasa · 22/12/2022 23:39

Living room - DP is from near Edinburgh and I’m from the north west of Scotland.

Though, I actually spend more time sitting in a couch in the dining room, which technically is an open plan kitchen diner... I never call it that, it’s the dining room and separately the kitchen... and we rarely use the dining table, so if anything the half with the couch and armchair is actually the main use of that room anyway. 😂

So multi purpose open plan room that I mostly sit in is the dining room and the living room just has couches, tv and books in it and nothing else... so...

I do have a back and a front hall though and everybody else is confused by me using those terms, so that might just be a me thing.

Living room

I'm Scottish, he's English and I grew up saying living room but then for lumbered with a back room too (dining room 😆)

Isahlo · 22/12/2022 23:41

Living room. I used to call it the front room too but then we bought a house with a kitchen at the front and a living room at the back and now I can’t call it the front room. I’ve lived in five houses before this all with front living rooms so it was an adjustment 😂😂😂

I’m West Country but originally from london with northern parents.
everyone calls it living room /front room.

DP’s family are from Essex and they and him all say sitting room /lounge

AssumingDirectControl · 22/12/2022 23:45

Lounge, West Country. I’m too lazy to say two words.
