Most heatbreaking scenes on tv

What are the scenes that made you feel real emotion or even cry when they aired?

I’ll start with

Glee. When Karofsky feels suicide is his only option after being outed and Blaine is singing cough syrup as he gets himself dressed. The emotion Karofsky shows hits hard.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The spies goodbye. It always makes me well up no matter how many times I see it.

The 100. When Monty has left a message to Clarke talking about how he and Harper didn’t cryo themselves and instead lived a life and had a son.

Lucifer. The end episode. Says it all

The montage at the end of the Doctor Who two parter where he believes he is a teacher and falls in love with Jessica Stevenson’s character. You see how happy they would have been together, but he rediscovers his Time Lord self and it all can’t happen.

The episode of Eastenders after Billy died from
alcohol poisoning was truly harrowing. There was a scene following Carol through the market which was devastating. Really well done.

Going over the top out of the trenches in Blackadder, the single most affecting piece of tv ' drama' for me. The clip was on Twitter recently. It is all the more powerful after the sarcastic comedy of all the previous series.

Yea absolutely this one. Always find myself choked up. Very well done x

@heathspeedwell yeah, her watching everyone and then with the baby and the baby being taken away. Then of course Daryl and Carol, and knowing a lot of that wasn't just acting, but genuine love.

Fanacapan · 21/12/2022 17:03

Most recently The English reduced me to ugly sobs more than once, ‘home is here, with you’, ‘I cherish you’, ‘it is not your shame’, best thing on telly this year!

WingingItSince1973 · 21/12/2022 17:05

Blackadder over the top episode.

When Dr Digby died in Holby. Loved that character

Sybil in Downtown Abbey.

Dr Who one where he and Rose Tyler get separated and she has to live in a parallel world. Then when he has to erase Donnas memories to save her and send her home. Thank goodness DT is returning soon. ❤️

Rachel dying in Cold Feet.

I only clicked on this thread to say this. Gets me every time. I think because I just didn't see it coming.

Is a long time ago but in Buffy when Oz broke up with Willow because he wasn’t safe to be around her. I cried my eyes out! They’re both such amazing actors.

Jb2182 · 21/12/2022 17:09

So many Rocky Gervais moments.
"please don't make me redundant" - The Office.
This Woman's Work scene - Extras.
The bit where the dog has to be put down - Derek.

Also, when Lynette lost the baby in Desperate Housewives.
Oh and when Mike died in Desperate Housewives.

VirginiaQ · 21/12/2022 17:11

In 'This is Going to Hurt' when what happened to Suruthi happened. I was so shocked I actually stopped breathing for a moment. Couldn't stop thinking about it.

The moment of realisation in the Inside No 9 episode The 12 Days of Christine.

YES! 'Mummy's got to go now'. Always has me proper sobbing.

Barbara brushing Nana’s hair in the Royle Family, Queen of Sheba episode

purpledalmation · 21/12/2022 17:13

In Dr Who, Clara the Impossible Girl, who doesn't know she is dead.

Totally confusing but very emotional

The Futurama episode Jurassic Bark. When we learn that Fry's dog Seymour waited for Fry, after his disappearance, every single day for the next 12 years, until he died. While an oblivious Fry assumes he had a happy life. Can't even type that without tearing up. Can't even look at a picture. Kills me still.

That one haunts me still too.

lemons44 · 21/12/2022 17:16

The last ever episode of friends... even though it isn't sad. The music, the slow panning of the room to their keys on the side and then the door.

CaveMum · 21/12/2022 17:17

The West Wing, Mrs Landingham, Charlie breaking the news. Then a couple of seasons later, Leo getting the news about Zoey and running to tell the president. No words, you just see it through the window. There was also an episode about pardoning prisoners, and they decided not to release one to avoid accusations of nepotism. Donna then hears what happens to him and it’s heart wrenching.

Absolutely, and not just Mrs Landingham’s death but the scene in “In Excelcis Deo” when she talks about her twin son’s dying in Vietnam “It’s hard not to think that right then they needed their mother” 😭

Also the death of Agent Sunshine and of course Leo, knowing full well that the on screen reactions of the cast are genuine following the death of John Spencer.

REP22 · 21/12/2022 17:19

Also the ending of Blackadder Goes Forth. And the Dr. Who episode "Father's Day", where Rose goes back in time to meet her deceased dad, she saves him and he sacrifices himself for her. Also the episodes where Donna hears the song of the Ood slaves and the Pompeii one where she begs the Doctor to save someone, not the whole town but just someone. And the "School Reunion" one where he meets Sarah-Jane Smith and K9 again and K9 sacrifices himself.

It’s a Sin. When the guy’s mum tells his fried that he has died. She stopped his friends from seeing him, telling him they loved him. Heartbreaking.

Ugh yes. Great performance from Keeley Hawes. I actually hated her at that moment, really terrific performance.

CaveMum · 21/12/2022 17:21

Re the Blackadder Goes Forth episode, I heard an interview with Ben Elton a while back: he said his uncle (Sir Geoffrey Elton) was a prominent historian and when BGF was originally airing he wrote a letter to BE telling him how disappointed he was that he’d make a comedy out of such an important time in history and how he was ashamed of him. When the final episode aired he wrote to him again apologising profusely and saying how perfect it was.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 21/12/2022 17:21

Earliest one - when Meg died on the beach in Home and Away. More recently, Matthew's death in Downton Abbey - I was late to the party and only watched it 2-3 years ago. I just didn't see it coming. Grey's Anatomy - George, Denny, dead Derek, the plane crash and when Cristina leaves. I cry at TV a lot!

Don't laugh but I remember being really upset by Go Forth Young Meowth in the original Pokemon series. How he's an outcast because he can talk, and his one true love is stolen by someone else. I was about 9 and totally devastated!

Perfect Strangers. So many scenes make me cry, but the final scene when Alice is giving her toast and says that she loved Richard as her own child is just 💔

Oh I loved that series.

Matthew McFadyen in that long coat!😊

JJFeild.

Anton Lesser.

Michael Gambon.

Lindsay Duncan,

Timothy Spall.

Fabulous!
