Most heatbreaking scenes on tv

What are the scenes that made you feel real emotion or even cry when they aired?

I’ll start with

Glee. When Karofsky feels suicide is his only option after being outed and Blaine is singing cough syrup as he gets himself dressed. The emotion Karofsky shows hits hard.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The spies goodbye. It always makes me well up no matter how many times I see it.

The 100. When Monty has left a message to Clarke talking about how he and Harper didn’t cryo themselves and instead lived a life and had a son.

Lucifer. The end episode. Says it all

Sybill's death in Downton is so, so sad. They way it's done, the tension about whether she has eclampsia, then the safe birth of the baby and everyone giving a big sigh of relief only for her to die anyway. The acting is superb and I cry every time I watch it.

There is a scene in the same episode where Mary and Edith are with her body and Mary says something about it being the last time they will be together in this life that always sets me off too.

Going over the top out of the trenches in Blackadder, the single most affecting piece of tv ' drama' for me. The clip was on Twitter recently. It is all the more powerful after the sarcastic comedy of all the previous series.

Me too.

I first saw that as a teenager and had to lock myself in the bathroom to sob!

Empire of the Sun when Christian Bale sees his mum at the end
Anne of Green Gables when Gilbert survives and they walk across the pond.
Sybil in Downton
Barbara in Call the Midwife (I am still traumatised)
Whitney dying in Beaches

Rachels death in the original series of Cold Feet.

Too many in the This is England series to name. Shane Meadows is insanely talented.

Came on to say the rape scene in This is England series.
Never watched anything like it

Yes!

Not only Buffy’s reaction of mommy, but Anya. Anya who cares about herself and Xander and is genuinely confused as to why Joyce is no longer there.

It's the episode afterwards that gets me. I can sit through The Body completely stonefaced but the next episode where she tells Dawn she's been busy because when she stops it all becomes real breaks me

When Rodney married Cassandra and then they left the do at the Nags Head. The room cleared and Del was left alone with his thoughts while Simply Red's Holding back the years played. Cried when it first aired and cry every time i see it. Brilliant writing.

Agreed. One of the best pieces of television ever.

MoonahSton · 21/12/2022 16:15

When Marshall's dad died in How I Met Your Mother. The subtle count down throughout the episode that you don't even notice at first viewing and the way he goes from happy and excited to devastated in about a second.

It aired around the time my dad died and when he says "I'm not ready for this" it hit me right in the heart as it entirely summed up how I felt and it still makes me well up when I see it years later.

My Girl - when the young boy dies 🥹

Namechange567775 · 21/12/2022 16:19

Bodies - when the woman in a coma sees a photo of her stillborn baby and her nipple leak. Didn’t quite understand the impact of that scene until I had my first and now I can’t even deal with just thinking about it. Absolutely devastating.

e11even · 21/12/2022 16:20

Just seen you said TV! In that case, I'll have to second Lady Sybil's death in Downton Abbey!

lbnblbnb · 21/12/2022 16:22

Blackadder Goes Forth final episode - devastating.
Only When It Hurts - Shruti. I knew it was coming but so so awful.

Perfect Strangers. So many scenes make me cry, but the final scene when Alice is giving her toast and says that she loved Richard as her own child is just 💔

What channel is this?

powershowerforanhour · 21/12/2022 16:29

Wolf Hall - the bit where his wife and children die from sweating sickness so quickly and the nurses/home helps are trying to revive his daughters.

SequinsandStilettos · 21/12/2022 16:32

It's a sin. Neil Patrick Harris's scenes. Callum Scott-Howell's. And the ending.
Absolutely criminal that Olly Alexander and the aforesaid didn't get every award going.

Latenightreader · 21/12/2022 16:33

The West Wing, Mrs Landingham, Charlie breaking the news. Then a couple of seasons later, Leo getting the news about Zoey and running to tell the president. No words, you just see it through the window. There was also an episode about pardoning prisoners, and they decided not to release one to avoid accusations of nepotism. Donna then hears what happens to him and it’s heart wrenching.

Ikeatears · 21/12/2022 16:35

Matthew's death in Downton. Bloody ruined my Christmas that year!

Wolf Hall - the bit where his wife and children die from sweating sickness so quickly and the nurses/home helps are trying to revive his daughters.

Agree. Made me cry so much when I read it, but the TV series too - so dreadful.

VelvetThunder · 21/12/2022 16:36

Scrubs- my lunch. Every single time.

The last episode of the walking dead got me. I was trying to hold it in the whole way through, but it got me.

heathspeedwell · 21/12/2022 16:38

@VelvetThunder me too. I just didn't want her to die and when she was smiling at her baby and being so brave I was undone.

wormshuffled · 21/12/2022 16:39

When Hillary dies in Beaches.
Boy in the striped pajamas.

ohioriver · 21/12/2022 16:41

Agree re blackadder goes forth.

SpideyCraw · 21/12/2022 16:44

The scene in House of the Dragon when Rhaenyra gives birth to her still born daughter. The way she holds her and the e look on her face. Emma D’Arcy is a brilliant actor.

Could also pick any number of scenes from Greys Anatomy

countrypunk · 21/12/2022 16:47

@walkinthewoodstoday It was a short series on the BBC about 20 years ago. It stars Matthew MacFadyen pre Pride and Prejudice. I've just checked and you can watch it on Amazon for free if you get the BritBox week long trial.

It's wonderful! Very understated and very very moving.

thenewaveragebear1983 · 21/12/2022 16:47

We are rewatching Broadchurch and I had forgotten how raw and how sad a lot of series 1 is.
