What do you think about asylum seekers being sent to Rwanda?

Just seen on the news that some of the asylum seekers arriving here on boats will be sent to Rwanda…

Do you think this will discourage people from making the dangerous journey across the channel? Is this the answer?

Im not sure what to think about it, seems a bit random… Why Rwanda?

But I guess something needs to be done to discourage people from paying these criminal gangs to set them up with unsafe boats with the intention of coming to the UK… What does everyone else think about this?

Whether people wish to speak openly about it immigration is a huge issue for a lot of people.
Whether it's because they believe the rubbish peddled to them by the media or actual concern.
My question is and i have asked this on refugee charity site.... why do the French allow unaccompanied minors to live in camps? Why are they not in care in France? And treated as the children they are.
There was 4/5 unaccompanied minors on the last boat that got into trouble and one died. Why are the camps not checked?

What makes you think they were living in camps? Most minors are trafficked across other countries direct to the beach and dinghy. The human traffickers move them from one captor to another…transported in lorries…locked overnight in various sheds and basements.

@Onnabugeisha I didn't realise that I am sorry.

It’s not your fault, our government is not being honest with us regarding the channel crossings and neither is the media. Here is a statement the UN published today on the subject of modern slavery and the channel crossings:

I do think other countries have much stricter immigration policies than the UK to be fair.

I wonder how they are actually going to implement the Rwanda policy…

The court findings in respect of the eight cases specifically referred to them demonstrate that the Home Office struggles to comply with the relevant legal requirements in any event as they were found to have acted wrongly in all eight. Therefore I suspect that, if they try again, they will get back in the same position or, at best, will be left in the situation of having an entire expensive aircraft chartered for at most one or two people.

There was an LBC chat about this on Saturday.

One asylum seeker said the reason he came here on a boat said it was because he spoke English (badly) and had family and friends here.

They also pointed out that lots of French speaking colonies would go to France but there seemed to be the misconception that streets here are paved with gold (not my words!).

I think properly trained workers of course are needed here but with the people trafficker issues no one knows who’s coming to the UK or the first safe country and yes they can’t work currently if they’re asylum seekers. I do see sometimes Albanians who control it seems drugs and prostitution and petty crime but all that is brushed under the carpet.

This is another argument in favour of allowing safe passage, having some sort of processing office set up in France, and allowing asylum seekers to work. That. would allow people to explain the realities of life in Britain and reduce the power of criminal gangs to lure people into vice and supplying drugs.

They are human beings not cargo to be shunted round the world. And I don't advocate an open door policy into the UK. Applications on their own merit.

Net migration is up since Brexit. We can and do get many people arriving and can use work visas - more effective if it’s matching workforce skills too

Obviously net migration isn't up enough, given that it is widely recognised that we have a chronic workforce shortage. In the NHS alone there are over 133,000 full time equivalent vacancies.

There's a limit to how fussy we need to be about matching workforce skills given how many of the vacancies are in jobs requiring very limited skills, including jobs in care, cleaning and hospitality.

That’s not that high a vacancy rate actually given that the NHS employs 1.5 million people. That means it’s staffed at over 90%. We do have critical shortages in skilled areas, nursing and general practice being the two obvious ones.

It's costing a fortune in taxes to clothe, feed and house them. How is that right when we are in a cost of living crisis and that money could be used to help us ???

How much of a fortune? Or can't you be arsed supporting your wild claims?

lollipoprainbow · 22/12/2022 09:34

@echt 3.5 billion a year will that do you ??

Do you have a link for that?

echt · 22/12/2022 09:47

And who is "them"?

lollipoprainbow · 22/12/2022 09:52

@echt you know fully well where I read it so I'll wait for the sneery comments.

Asylum seekers I meant sorry if that wasn't clear to you.

What on earth are you on about? I can't read your, ahem, mind.

Still as you plainly unwilling or unable to back up what you say, try this:

If you’re waiting for sneery comments, it sounds like you know where you read it isn’t known for being a reliable source. How embarrassing for you. Sort of shows you for who and what you are though, just like other comments you’ve made. In plain sight.

lollipoprainbow · 22/12/2022 10:44

@MyLifeInAMovie and there it is. I'm not embarrassed at all to have an opinion on immigration. It's such a shame that there can't ever be a proper conversation about it without the racist comments being banded about from hand wringing, virtue signalling do gooders who are probably very far removed from the issues it causes.

And pensions cost more than £100b. Benefits over £40b. Just for some perspective.
