Pillowcases instead of stockings?

As a family we moved to Glasgow in the summer. This is our first Christmas here and my kids keep telling me the Glasgow tradition is to have pillowcases instead of stockings. Is it true this is common in Glasgow? And if yes, why??

Also from the midlands and used pillowcases, no connection to Scotland in our family

Interesting, we’ve always had pillow cases thanks to my Midlands mum. Never thought of it as a regional thing.

Sorry we’ve derailed you from Glasgow OP!

Itwasntevenblackpudding · 19/12/2022 17:19

It's very common everywhere.

Did you move there from the moon?

HelloDaisy · 19/12/2022 17:21

My dc have pillowcases but only because I forgot that dd needed a new stocking until we came to put them out on Christmas Eve. I gave them a pillowcase each and they had a great time decorating them with sharpies.

They are much older now but I still use them as stockings, lovely memory.

North of England.

Our main presents went into a pillowcase and appeared at the end of our beds overnight. Had a separate stocking of little bits appear on the bedpost. Presents under the tree where from relatives and friends.

I have never heard of it before!

I'm from Lancashire. We all had pillowcases in the living room which all the presents went in. I've only met 1 family in my entire 50 years who did a stocking. It's completely alien to me. Even middle class DH from Kent didn't have them.

Lulu1919 · 19/12/2022 17:35

Always had a pillow case ...from Father Christmas with presents from him.
Under the tree was from mum and dad
I'm 55 and from up north

BlackboardMonitorVimes · 19/12/2022 17:35

Pillowcases for us too, no scottish links

Athenen0ctua · 19/12/2022 17:37

We had sacks the size of pillowcases as children. They weren't a direct substitute to a small stocking as they contained the proper presents. Presents from other family went under the tree.

LumpyandBumps · 19/12/2022 17:38

We had pillow cases when I was a child. South East.

Plexie · 19/12/2022 17:39

I had a pillowcase (London). I wonder if it was an easy option before cheap, mass-produced stockings became available.

kinkytoes · 19/12/2022 17:39

We had them in Essex in the 80s! Pillowcases can fit a LOT of presents in them 😁

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 19/12/2022 17:39

Londoner. Dad from Sunderland, Mum from south coast, we had pillowcases. As do my Yorkshire dc.

UrsulaPandress · 19/12/2022 17:39

North West. Always had pillowcases when I was little. Either side of the fireplace.

Never understood stockings.

SunsetOverEasterIsland · 19/12/2022 17:44

North West here too growing up and it was always a pillowcase. I don't recall fancy Christmas sacks or stockings being a thing when I was a child in the 60's.

mbosnz · 19/12/2022 17:45

We had pillowcases when I was ditty. NZ.

strawberriesplease · 19/12/2022 17:46

We had a large sock Confused

GiantKitten · 19/12/2022 17:48

I’m 71 & we had pillowcases in Middlesex.
But my mum was from the Midlands so it will have come from her?

Sidge · 19/12/2022 17:48

We had a pillowcase as children. My mum is from Yorkshire.

I was always astounded at how FC managed to get the presents in without waking us, then once learned FC was M&D was astounded that mum and dad could do it without waking us. Finally found out in my 20s that she put one pillowcase of a double matching set at the end of our beds, then the other one pre-loaded and swapped once asleep. Doh.

antelopevalley · 19/12/2022 17:49

This has somehow passed me by.

Pillowcases for us too. Irish, but lived in Australia when we were kids. They did it there and we’ve always kept it up

SoupDragon · 19/12/2022 17:50

London here and we used pillow cases (or plastic sacks originally I think). I made my children sacks.
