Pillowcases instead of stockings?

As a family we moved to Glasgow in the summer. This is our first Christmas here and my kids keep telling me the Glasgow tradition is to have pillowcases instead of stockings. Is it true this is common in Glasgow? And if yes, why??

I'm from Manchester. We never had stockings. Always a pillow case which appeared overnight.

We had my brother's football socks full of tiny gifts to open the second we woke up and then main presents under the tree to open with parents and family.
