Pillowcases instead of stockings?

As a family we moved to Glasgow in the summer. This is our first Christmas here and my kids keep telling me the Glasgow tradition is to have pillowcases instead of stockings. Is it true this is common in Glasgow? And if yes, why??

But big presents went under the tree.
(The only thing I remember from the pillowcase is a selection box)

We used pull-ups cases for the first time last year. Super easy and holds everything. Will definitely be doing it from now on

We had pillow cases growing up in Australia. Called them our Santa sacks!

Wineandwinelalalala · 19/12/2022 17:52

central Scotland and we always had pillowcases growing up. My kids get one as well each. Oh and don’t forget the matey bubble bath lol 😂

MrsCarson · 19/12/2022 17:59

Wales here and we had pillowcases growing up. I did the same for my kids.
Now you can get nice Christmasy ones I wish I had one of those. Mine was a brush cotton striped one.

Jaichangecentfoisdenom · 19/12/2022 18:00

We had pillowcases in London in the Sixties. Family presents round the tree.

ReggaeRocks · 19/12/2022 18:00

Stockings here in Argyll, for decades.

TellMeWhere · 19/12/2022 18:01

I always had a stocking. I had a nice knitted one with bells on it but I'm not sure where it went :(

Not sure I'd want the pressure of filling a pillowcase.

Letsgosew · 19/12/2022 18:06

Child of the 60's here. We had pillowcases at the end of our bed. No stockings. We lived in London/Essex, but my dad had Scottish parents.
DH and I have always done stockings for DC's.

Tinselpipes · 19/12/2022 18:09

Father Christmas presents in a pillowcase at the end of the bed, presents from parents under the tree. London

flatpack1 · 19/12/2022 18:14

London. Youre all really posh we have only ever used black bin bags 😂

iPreferBooks · 19/12/2022 18:15

I always had a pillowcase when I was younger with chocolate coins at the bottom!

North West England.

Lozzybear · 19/12/2022 18:18

Plastic Santa sacks for us in Yorkshire in the late 70’s/80’s. My DCs have the 21st century equivalent - a beautiful material Santa sack each with their names embroidered on them.

I had a pillowcase (London). I wonder if it was an easy option before cheap, mass-produced stockings became available.

Pretty sure that people used knitted socks before cheap mass produced stockings specially made not to be footwear at all existed. We had woolen knee length adult size socks as stockings as children.

When I was a child everyone I knew had basically colourful knitted mens socks as stockings to hang up. I didn't encounter the pillowcase idea until I was attending toddler's groups with my own first child in the home counties - not people with any Scottish link they ever mentioned.

Ilovedthe70s · 19/12/2022 18:30

We had pillowcases in the 60’s, West Country.
My kids had pillowcases in the 80’s, their kids also have pillowcases now.

We would have thought a stocking was a bit posh when I was a little maid.

UrsulaPandress · 19/12/2022 18:32

@Wineandwinelalalala

The Matey 😂

fancyacuppatea · 19/12/2022 18:32

Cheshire born and bred (me n DH)
We never had a stocking, always a pillowcase.

Singleandproud · 19/12/2022 18:32

Pillowcases in our house in the 80s too. I think proper Christmasy stocking are a newer trend with the Internet making purchasing things like that easier. Unless Woolies stocked them I suppose most people would go with a pillowcase they had at home.

Pillowcase always contained a Beano annual which we read whilst Dad put the gas fire on and made mum a cup of tea, pants and socks, an orange, jelly lollies and various other bits that I can't remember.

fancyacuppatea · 19/12/2022 18:34

Matey. Yep, that too.

TizerorFizz · 19/12/2022 18:35

Never had pillow cases. We had stretchy old boot socks. We weren’t rich enough to have a pillowcase of presents. Near London.

woodhill · 19/12/2022 18:36

We always had pillowcases as dc as I did with my own dc

soupmaker · 19/12/2022 18:37

I'm Scottish. We had my dads kilt socks! They would be filled and a big present would be left at the bottom of the bed. He had a few pairs and it wasn't until I was in my 20s Mum explained that the stuffed socks were in the wardrobe and were swapped with its pair on the end of beds.

Cousins had pillow cases. They were rich.

HippoInABadWig · 19/12/2022 18:37

Pillowcases in Norfolk too.

One year my mum, who was going through a knitting machine phase, knitted pillowcase-sized stockings with reindeer and suchlike on. She didn't take into account how much wool stretches and increases capacity... it was the one and only year we had those stockings 😁
