Pillowcases instead of stockings?

As a family we moved to Glasgow in the summer. This is our first Christmas here and my kids keep telling me the Glasgow tradition is to have pillowcases instead of stockings. Is it true this is common in Glasgow? And if yes, why??

Pillowcases in Norfolk too.

One year my mum, who was going through a knitting machine phase, knitted pillowcase-sized stockings with reindeer and suchlike on. She didn't take into account how much wool stretches and increases capacity... it was the one and only year we had those stockings 😁

Did you use them as sleeping bags afterwards? Wink

I'm from Liverpool,

We had pillowcases at the end of our bed with small presents in.

main presents were wrapped under the tree.

Pillow cases for my kids in the 90s onwards. We're in London and no connection to Scotland.

RaininSummer · 19/12/2022 18:51

Pillowcases in Essex in the 60s and 70s and again in Devon in the 80s and 90s. Can't get anything in a stocking can you?

viques · 19/12/2022 18:59

We used to have both! A Stocking filled with little things that felt knobbly and exciting and always had a tangerine and a sugar mouse so you knew you had got to the end. And then there was a pillowcase! With bigger stuff.

Ps when I say stocking I mean stocking, as in nylon stocking donated by my mum!

I'm from the southeast and my brother and I had pillowcases when we were growing up.

Nanalisa60 · 19/12/2022 19:37

That’s very retro of you, we only had pillowcases in the 1960’s

Fifthtimelucky · 19/12/2022 19:42

I was a child in the 1960s (SW England) and we always had a pillowcase each which held all our presents.

We have always done stockings for our (now adult) children, which we hang on the mantelpiece. They contain small unwrapped stocking fillers and the rest of the presents go under the tree.

Imabitbusyatthemoment · 19/12/2022 19:45

AnneShirleysNewDress · 19/12/2022 19:47

LouLou198 · 19/12/2022 21:31

NorthWest, born in the early 80's, we had pillowcases.

Junegirl15 · 19/12/2022 21:52

Yes we had pillowcases in the NE in the 70s and 80s. My kids have always had them too - I embroidered their name on in green and red when they were little and they still want to put them out on Christmas Eve now they are teenagers!

DashingWhiteSergeant · 19/12/2022 21:53

Glasgow here, have never heard of pillowcases for stockings.

Dirtystreetpie · 19/12/2022 22:01

So when did everyone switch to stockings? Pillowcases here in west country in 80s/90s

Lennybenny · 19/12/2022 22:03

In the 80s/90s we always had pillowcases. We're down in the south west of England.

YourWinter · 19/12/2022 22:05

Surrey, we had pillowcases (1950s/1960s) and my kids did too, but now for their own children they do huge fancy stockings and a big Santa sack personalised with the child’s name!

NotMeekNotObedient · 19/12/2022 22:28

I had a pillowcase. It contained presents I could open straight away...it appeared overnight. Definitely the stuff I was most excited about. Filled with stuff like activity books...I think the idea was to avoid my parents being woken up super early. Not sure it quite worked like that as I'd often trot though to my parents bed to show them what santa had brought me! But lots of good memories of those mornings.

I love the idea from a PP about decorating one.
