Barely able to control my bladder usually.

Got an awful cough and of course every time I cough, even if I have just emptied my bladder, I wee.

Its fucking annoying and embarrassing and just bloody soul destroying.

2 showers a day, pads, worrying about smelling and getting sore.

My body is just ruined I think.

Oh gosh, that sounds awful. I’m glad you’re finally on the mend. 💜

I had covid nearly a year ago, turned into pneumonia and when it was gone I was still leaking a bit. Bought an electric exerciser thing, its a sort of bullet shaped thing you put in your vagina and it strengthens the muscles. It has worked really well, cost about £60 I think but if people are wearing pads it might be cheaper as well as a lot more pleasant in the long run.

Don't give up hope, we shouldn't have to live with this.

My cough and bladder issue has also gone, happy to report. The rib pain from vomiting lasted a few days but also gone. Feeling much better.
my pelvic floor had been getting weaker over the past year anyway and I had been doing exercises so just going to keep up with that as I was seeing an improvement.

someone on here recommended the NHS Squeezy app and it’s really good.

God I have this too. And it's so humiliating. So fed up with it. Had it two weeks now.

Sadly, joining the pee club.
My modibodi heavy duty period pants have proven inadequate. I'm now googling for washable extra heavy duty reusable pads.

I also had this before christma,s mid December and was wearing pads for a couple of week. I was a bit down to think that's it, here we go, pelvic floor gone, But I have to say I'm now back to normal so can cough and sneeze now without an obvious leak. So I do think it was something specific about that cough/virus, so hopefully the situation will improve again.

I second the suggestion of seeing a women's health physio. There is treatment available, and also, especially for the mooncup lady - you may have an undiagnosed prolapse and an examination by a women's health physio will find that - honestly they are so much better than GPs.

For those of you who are doing pelvic floor exercises, as well as the 'long' squeezes, you have to practice short ones as these are the muscle fibres that you need when you cough. So counting to 20 and squeezing very firmly then relaxing on each count.

General exercise also helps, as doing things like starjumps (and indeed any jumping around) will gradually strengthen the pelvic floor.

Women are more vulnerable to this because of giving birth, because of the set-up of the urinary tract (basically women's is more 'straight down and out' and men's is a bit more twisty) and also because of the effect of hormonal changes around the menopause. But absolutely this is treatable until proven otherwise - at which point you will usually be offered surgery.

And of course, for many people, this will be temporary whilst you have a bad cough, and will only cause a slight leak. But for those of you who are really distressed - please seek help, and specifically request a women's health physio referral, because male GPs especially will not necessarily think of it.

I think you are missing the point.

A lot of us on here don't have issues with leaking normally, even with heavy colds and coughs. It's a random symptom that's taken us by surprise, which goes when the bug goes.

For women with ongoing issues, or even issues every time they get a cough, then absolutely they should see someone about it.

But what's the point in going when it is a one off that resolves itself fully.

I still have the cough btw, and it's bad enough that it's making me retch several times a day. My pelvic floor is managing fine once again.

If you’re looking for a more absorbent product, I kid you not, DD’s DryNites pants for age 8-15 are so stretchy that they fit me, and they’re now black with a floral print rather than looking like a child’s nappy.

Worth a go if you’re a 40’’ waist or less.

Hi everyone,

Have had this awful cough about 4 weeks now and have been weeing myself badly for a couple of weeks almost. Never happened before but has been quite bad.
How long does this last and how long does the cough last? Did you go to the doctors or just wait for it to pass? It’s so awful!

Deathraystare · 29/01/2023 08:44

@ColinRobinsonsfamiliar ·

Love the name!

Welcome to my world. I have to have bed pads. If I sneeze, cough or get out of bed there is a Tsunami. Not so bad when up and about but the effort of getting out of bed, getting to a standing position etc.

Fed up of the bulkiness of the pants. No packing a bikini and lip gloss for a beach holiday. Half to a full suitcase of pants and pads for me. I have to pack some bed pads as well if staying anywhere and getting rid of the stuff the next day if not at home....

Cannot have anything done about my bladder either as I am taking a water tablet plus 2 of my other medications - the side effects are you piss for England!

I’m so sorry you’re going through this too. For me, the worst was over after a couple of weeks, but in total I was wearing incontinence pads for a month until I felt confident to leave the house without worrying what might happen if I get a coughing fit.

I ended up seeing a GP and was prescribed antibiotics and steroids. Not sure how much they really helped. I mentioned the incontinence and the GP shrugged her shoulders and said it’ll stop when the coughing stops, which was true in the end but also frustrating because stress incontinence is normalised when really it’s preventable and treatable. I’m making a real effort to strengthen my pelvic floor so I don’t experience this all over again the next time I get a cough. I downloaded the NHS Squeezy app. It’s not free but well worth the £3.

I hope this helps. Hang in there, it WILL pass but it’s a horrible thing to go through.

It’s the smell merlot. No matter what, pads, period pants it’s the smell or the paranoia around the smell.

Yeah I know that feeling. When I go in the lift to chuck the rubbish (pants and pads) I hate it if anyone else is in the lift and at work if someone is near me I hope they cannot smell anything!
