Electric throws, do you feel the wires through the throw ?

MoriaRoseForever · 12/12/2022 17:07

Hi

i have been researching electric heated throws. Looked at the ones recommended on here .

I’ve seen a few reviews mentions feeling the wires, but in general most people don’t mention them . So I wondered if people feel them but expect to so don’t say in reviews, or just some people notice? If some throws better than others for that .

Also been tempted by the Dreamland faux fur ones , around £110. But saw one person in a review said they washed it and it stopped being fluffy .

So perhaps velvet , fleece, flannel , Sherpa etc washes better ?

I don’t think they need regular washing, as throws, but wouldn’t want to damage a lovely expensive fluffy one when I do .

any advice or suggestions ?

thanks

This is what happened to mine. It is old though. With hindsight I’d have brushed it thoroughly, washed on cold and then brushed it out again before it dried. It’s still great at keeping me warm though.

That's never the husky one???

It is. As I said though, it is old. And it’s been in very frequent use.

I have the Dreamland one and wouldn't be without it now. Yes I can feel the wires if I dig about for them - they're more like spaghetti sized bendy plastic than metal wires iykwim.

Yes they remind me of Christmas tree lights. Bendy and soft, people ask about the wires did they used to be hard at one time?

Unforgettablefire · 13/12/2022 18:10

@ciri how old is it? I actually wouldn't be bothered if mine ended up like that if it lasts a good while and still works good.

Yabado · 13/12/2022 18:22

Both myself and my other half have the dreamland Alaskan husky fur heated throw
it’s amazing like have a huge fluffy bear that’s sitting on you 😂
I can’t feel any of the wires through it

Lakeland do them at the moment everywhere else is sold out.
i bought 2 this week as Xmas presents

the zebra one isn’t as nice

I won't bother with the zebra one then. I'm trying to get one from argos but they're all out of stock constantly!

I've got the husky one and my dd's dog is always on it or under it with me, it smells like a manky street dog. I'm nervous to wash it and don't want to be cold! 😂

Is that the blue one ? Like the look of that .

Yeah, it’s the blue one. It’s great!

Yabado · 13/12/2022 20:20

@Unforgettablefire
lakekands own website have them in stock

The zebra one is sort of flat but the husky one is so fluffy and lush
I’m using it now 😂
I bought 2 Alaskan husky throws this week as Christmas presents
unlike eBay and other sites they haven’t upped the prices either
eBay have them for over £150 Lakeland is still £109

Yabado · 13/12/2022 20:22

@Unforgettablefire. I’ve had mine for around 2 and half years now
I wouldn’t be without it in winter
I’ve never washed it ( I’m a skank😂 ) I just spray a bit of Febrezze on it and lovingly brush it with my tangle tease

I've got the husky one I got mine from argos, trying to get one for my daughter for Xmas but they're never in stock I need credit to get another one 😀
I might just spray it for now instead of washing it I really don't want to be without it!

I've got a sherpa, a fake fur, and a herringbone. They are all good, no massive difference between them in terms of heat, and I can feel the wires on all of them to an extent but not that it bothers me. I'd go for whatever you can find in stock.

That is the issue, Harley any in stock.

is there any difference in thickness and being able to wrap around when sitting ?

im still drawn to the checked Dreamland Sherpa as it’s larger . Think though the white will need washing more.

I have this one. Seems to be out of stock now but will come back again I think. It’s wonderful! So cheap to run and you don’t really notice the wires as they are bendy. The one thing I will say is that if you wrap yourself up in them they don’t work as well - you need to lay them out flat so the wires are as flat as possible then the heat distributes well - I’m on an energy forum and everyone says the same thing. I tend to lay it out flat on the sofa and sit under it or put it on top of my duvet. It’s so lovely. My favourite thing!

I also have this one. Had it a year now. It's fabulous, you can feel the wires if you try to but they are bendy and flexible so not uncomfortable or obtrusive.

I was wondering about the different faux fur ones . Is the zebra not very fluffy ? The fallow dear looks soft .

is the husky a nice pattern ? It’s hard to tell from the pictures .

I use ours under the mattress topper. It's still really cozy and no wires to feel.

darisdet · 13/12/2022 22:43

Thanks @Ciri I'll be tumble drying mine too.

darisdet · 13/12/2022 22:43

Bonus is that Lakeland offers a three year guarantee.

Make sure you get one that has the wires stitched in place They are the more expensive ones but worth it purely for safety alone. My wife has an expensive one with all the wires stitched and secure. I bought a cheap one off Amazon and the wires were secured by a thin fabric that tore straight away if it got caught or pulled. Eventually they all collapsed at the bottom of the throw and would get insanely dangerously hot when it was switched on.

This is the expensive one but it's fantastic and safe. We use it every day. Like a little cocoon over the pair of us.

Pelo22 · 14/12/2022 00:22

I have a dreamland relaxwell one that's the plain fabric (mine is brown and cream but it's old) sort of fleecy material

I get what people mean about patchy heat because well, the heat isn't all over as it's from the wires? But when it's spread over you then it's isn't obviously patchy
Mine has washed well and it's at least 2 years old, no issues with it at all. I had it over me today and didn't actually switch it on as it's nice and thick

JockTamsonsBairns · 14/12/2022 00:49

I've got the Alaskan Husky one, and it's honestly the best thing I own. Any time I'm not under it, I'm thinking about being under it.

I got mine about four years ago, and I probably wash it once a year. I don't see a need to wash it any more frequently than that.
As other pp have said, I wash it in the machine, let it dry naturally, then throw it in a cool tumble dryer for ten minutes to fluff it back up again. Comes up good as new.

As for the wires, I don't notice them in general use - but I might if I went feeling for them? It's never been a problem.

I bought DS1 the exact same one a few years ago, as it was a good solution to feeling cold in his flat. He loves it and wouldn't be without it.

I bought DS2 a heated throw last year for Xmas - a much cheaper one, which seemed to have decent enough reviews. I regret that - it feels quite thin, and the wires are definitely noticeable.

Both he and DD are getting the husky one for Xmas this year. DD has been using mine for the past three weeks, and I can't wait to reclaim it!

Furries · 14/12/2022 01:01

I’ve got a Dreamland faux fur heated throw. It’s dark grey (don’t judge!) and have had it about four years now.

I wouldn’t say it’s easy to drape over you (ie over/round your shoulders). But it’s amazing for draping over you on the sofa. It’s thick and fairly weighty, so is good even if it’s not switched on. You can “feel” the wires if you really press and try to feel them (if that makes sense). My cats have spent most evenings on it, doing their usual “kneading” on it and nothings blown up yet 🤣

Am not sure if they still do my grey one, but it’s exactly the same as my mum’s Alaskan husky one. It is, pretty much, the best thing I’ve spent my “fun/I want” money on. If and when it breaks, I will definitely be buying a replacement. Most evenings, I don’t have the heating on, just the throw - though that’s changed the last week, but only as I’m trying to avoid the risk of burst pipes.

i bought it in 2014. It gets a lot of use and is still going strong. I work from home and use it all day every day when it’s chillly.

I have been asking so many questions , but hopefully this is a useful thread for others .

I think I’m either getting the faux fur dreamland or the herringbone one they do .

likely depend on stocks !

The husky is in stock at Lakeland . I like the mustard herringbone but that seems out of stock everywhere .

these are my two favourites
