Coke on nights out

Mewme · 11/12/2022 19:47

I don't know if my life has been a bit sheltered but is it quite common for people to have coke on nights out/house parties?

They're all in their 40's, successful, have dc etc.

I'm quite shocked tbh, I thought it wouldn't be a thing anymore and it's tainted what was a good night up to the point I realised what most were disappearing off to do. I don't want to be around it.

My thoughts are possibly clouded due to a family member who had a drugs problem. Maybe it's not the massive deal, that I'm thinking it is.

Not at 40 no.
I'm stunned looking back at what I used to get up to.
I'd be terrified to do it now! And I'd probably need at least a week to get over the late night.

Yep. Me too.

Scout2016 · 11/12/2022 21:49

Yeah I know a fair few friend and family who do OP. Screams Arrested Development to my mind.
All are outwardly socially conscious, eco aware and lefty as well as university educated and professionals. Late 30s early 40s with worthy type jobs, big on not having plastic for their kid's toys, those types of people.
Just not socially conscious enough to give a toss about where the drugs come from and the harm they cause. They think they are somehow about it all and different.
Sometimes I think "serve you bloody right if you get caught and lose your job or have social services on the phone."
Also they aren't that young anymore, surely their bodies will start feeling the strain? That side seems dangerous to me.
Sorry, that turned into a mini vent.

*above it all

FluffingtonMuffington · 11/12/2022 21:56

Very common in my circles. Late 30s.

youcantry · 11/12/2022 21:57

Yes, it's common. I'm 51 and for the past 30 odd years, doing coke is normal. I'm in outer London. I haven't for the past few years (because my partner is an ex addict) but my friends still do. You go to any party and it's rife. It seems people went from taking Es to taking cocaine. I don't touch it but most people I know do. My friends are still into the house music scene and they are well into their 50s but coke is still a part of the night. I don't go out anymore.

Wronglane · 11/12/2022 21:58

Yes very common. You don’t have to do it if you don’t want

Jennybeans401 · 11/12/2022 22:05

I don't know anyone on coke, I don't socialise much though. I don't even drink and can't stand being around drunk people breathing on me and talking shit.

I do know some people who are very well educated, into the eco stuff and very socially conscious who are into magic mushrooms. Seriously sounds scary as they are literally off their head on this stuff but because it's natural it's okay.

No idea where they would get this from? One is in a police type job so completely not expected.

Unstuckduck · 11/12/2022 22:05

What’s the appeal?

RampantIvy · 11/12/2022 22:15

tunthebloodyalarmoff · 11/12/2022 21:11

It's absolutely rife these days. People from every walk of life

Among the people you know.
I accept that it is more common than it used to be, but I'm not convinced that it is as rife as you claim it is.

DomPom47 · 11/12/2022 22:16

I think it’s vile. People may think it’s a victimless crime and their bodies etc etc etc but when you think of county lines and the crap associated with that it’s awful. Doesn’t happen in my circles and honestly I would not be friends with people like that.

plicks · 11/12/2022 22:18

Unstuckduck · 11/12/2022 22:05

What’s the appeal?

Like most drugs, it makes you feel nice.

diffandproud · 11/12/2022 22:21

Very common, you are very naive to think none of your friends take coke. Very popular among doctors, nurses, police even

ThatGirlInACountrySong · 11/12/2022 22:23

Scummy drugs, no thanks!

Ruins lives

GyozaGuiting · 11/12/2022 22:24

I don’t know anyone that does it, I’m in London a lot for work and socialising… literally no one! Getting very drunk, plenty of people though.

Nottodaysausage · 11/12/2022 22:25

It's vile, I don't let people that take it anywhere near me or my family

TiAmoTiAmo · 11/12/2022 22:25

I know a dentist who uses coke. He is in his 40s.
The ones in their 30s use weed.

LondonWolf · 11/12/2022 22:26

Only immature saddos are still doing coke in their forties. A friend of mine used to do it - quick line before heading out. Only sometimes he'd get caught up in bedtime with his very young children or some other parenting task and you'd see him interacting with them in this incredibly heightened, excitable way. Disgusting and it felt like he was deceiving his kids because this wasn't their Real Dad, just a drugged up bloke pretending to parent them.

Nottodaysausage · 11/12/2022 22:25

How would you even know ?

Mañanarama · 11/12/2022 22:28

How are people SO SURE they don’t know anyone who takes it? It’s not always obvious, you know.

gogohmm · 11/12/2022 22:31

Not seen (illegal class a) drugs openly taken since I worked in publishing. Cannabis however is smoked openly all around my town, mostly by the hippie types into crystals.

fUNNYfACE36 · 11/12/2022 22:31

I live in a small village about 600 people and mix with lots and lots there, and and people from work Ex school and uni friends definitely not socia lly acceptable in any of these circles. My kids tell me loads at school do it though ( mostly the posh obes)

StarDolphins · 11/12/2022 22:32

I did it up to early 30’s at weekends but would never be interested now. Some of my friends in their 49’s do it & I now find it quite pathetic. Feel like it’s common though.

RampantIvy · 11/12/2022 22:34

Mañanarama · 11/12/2022 22:28

How are people SO SURE they don’t know anyone who takes it? It’s not always obvious, you know.

Because we have discussed it with our friends. Most of my friends are over 50, and a lot are retired. The only party we have been invited to this year is a 70th birthday party.

None of us lead a party lifestyle, and we are too cautious and mindful of the criminal activity illegal drugs supports. I know a pub where it is rife, but it is full of teenagers and young twenty somethings, and it's not somewhere I would go to for a drink.

This is mumsnet where far too many posters think that everyone takes it. They don't.

gogohmm · 11/12/2022 22:34

Oh and I can't even have the other Coke because I'm hyper sensitive to caffeine Confused

The only dug my friends are keen on comes in barrels and is dispensed into glasses!

RampantIvy · 11/12/2022 22:37

We are far too sedate and boring to want to take illegal drugs.

DH is already in a cocktail of prescription medication.
