Coke on nights out

Mewme · 11/12/2022 19:47

I don't know if my life has been a bit sheltered but is it quite common for people to have coke on nights out/house parties?

They're all in their 40's, successful, have dc etc.

I'm quite shocked tbh, I thought it wouldn't be a thing anymore and it's tainted what was a good night up to the point I realised what most were disappearing off to do. I don't want to be around it.

My thoughts are possibly clouded due to a family member who had a drugs problem. Maybe it's not the massive deal, that I'm thinking it is.

I find it's very common but not amongst my closest few friends, it's never been for me but as long as it's not in my face I'm not that bothered what others do

DramaAlpaca · 11/12/2022 20:01

It doesn't happen in my circles. I wouldn't want to mix with people who do.

I forgot to add this, I wouldn't want to be around anyone with does this.

Thelongwayround · 11/12/2022 20:06

It’s very common in my industry and when I worked in hospitality too. Not among my close friends though.

pursuedbyablackdog · 11/12/2022 20:09

Quite common amongst professionals, but personally I think they are dicks. I think they are dicks because they have blood on their hands. Human trafficking, shootings in the country of origin, county lines, young kids getting stabbed. So many crimes linked to drugs, all at human cost. Twats with a capital 'T'.
If drugs were legalised I'd have no issues with people getting high.

OceanbreezeSun · 11/12/2022 20:09

When I lived in London - quite a number of my work colleagues would do coke on work nights out, they were all late 20s/early 30s though, no kids. You would see them all coming in and out of the toilets. Always thought it was weird to do it on work nights out.

I’m 36 now - most of my friends have kids & none of us do it. I’d be abit worried about them if they were doing drugs then going back to their kids. That’s not normal.

Iamthewombat · 11/12/2022 20:12

Personally I think it's a bit pathetic when proper adults with jobs and kids and responsibilities take recreational drugs. Time to grow up really

This! A couple of my male colleagues do it (finance). One is 43 but wants to pretend that he’s still 21. I feel like saying, you’re an accountant mate, not James Bond, cop on to yourself! And it makes them boring.

Pythonese · 11/12/2022 20:13

I won’t be friends with anyone who does coke or thinks that normal.

Proudofitbabe · 11/12/2022 20:15

Definitely not normal in my world, no. Especially at this age, I find it weird.

Mewme · 11/12/2022 20:20

Thanks for all the replies from both sides.

I just don't know what to think but went home much earlier than planned because of it, I just don't like being around it. Today I think it's mostly disappointment I feel.

They're v v good friends and have been for decades, I knew it went on when we were much younger but didn't think it still did I suppose.

roarfeckingroarr · 11/12/2022 20:20

Lots of people saying they wouldn't be friends with people who think it's normal.

I think it's normal. I also don't touch it. I just accept it's common and many live otherwise functioning lives - I don't find it shocking, just a bit pathetic and sad. Would you not be friends with me?

EleanorRavenclaw · 11/12/2022 20:21

DD17 told me and DH recently that some of her friends (not close more friends via college) have said their parents openly do it in front of them. That was a new low for me, I found it so disappointing.

getoutof · 11/12/2022 20:22

My gp cousin and all her doctor friends do it regularly (in their 40s)

RiverSkater · 11/12/2022 20:24

People with DC why take the risk? It could be mixed with anything.
Who can afford it also?
Also when I look at Danielle Westbrook I think 😟

Sarahcoggles · 11/12/2022 19:56

I went to a university reunion in the summer - we're all medics - had a pleasant evening in a restaurant. I was horrified to learn afterwards that loads of people were taking coke in the toilets. I had no idea.
Personally I think it's a bit pathetic when proper adults with jobs and kids and responsibilities take recreational drugs. Time to grow up really. And especially shocking when it's doctors doing it.

That is so sad, wasn't the joy of the reunion enough??

AngelinaFibres · 11/12/2022 20:30

I am so naive that I saw your title and thought it was a thread about people sticking to soft drinks on a night out. I don't knowingly know anyone who uses cocaine but I suspect my exhusband and his second wife ( who is now divorcing him) and their friends do it. He is an alcoholic, as os she so snorting stuff up their noses wouldn't surprise me at all

Dramaalpacas · 11/12/2022 20:30

Did anyone else think this was a thread about fizzy drinks?! No? Anyway.. I guess that shows how foreign it is to be that people I know would do it. Get some new friends.

Luredbyapomegranate · 11/12/2022 20:30

roarfeckingroarr · 11/12/2022 19:51

It's common, yes. More so in some places than others. In London, especially nice bits, it's everywhere.

I really don’t think so, and I work in the media.

I know people of this age that do, but far more that don’t.

iolaus · 11/12/2022 20:32

Is it weird that I read the title and thought 'of course that's normal, not every one drinks alcohol'?

Seriously thought you meant CocaCola rather than Cocaine - which I guess in itself answers the question

FfeminyddCymraeg · 11/12/2022 20:34

Meh, I wouldn’t bat an eyelid. Most older professionals I know do it and (imo) it’s one of the less offensive drugs I’ve been around.

WibblyWobblyLane · 11/12/2022 20:35

It was rife when I lived in SW London. Even the headteacher of a very naice school I worked for was doing it on staff night's out. There was even two girls in the toilets of tesco last weekend sniffing something, i assumed coke, after just calling their parents so must have been only teens! I wouldn't touch the stuff and neither do my closest friends though.

GoodSister · 11/12/2022 20:35

MolesOnPoles · 11/12/2022 19:52

I know people who do, and they’re all dicks.

Exactly

Ihaventgottimeforthis · 11/12/2022 20:35

It's not the drug itself but propping up the drug trade and all the incredible harm that does, as others have outlined.
Not giving a shit about that is a deal breaker for me.

WrongLife · 11/12/2022 20:38

I wouldn't be around people who do, but I'm subject to random drug testing at work. Means our work nights out are generally drug free!

grapehyacinthisactuallyblue · 11/12/2022 20:39

Meh for me too, in a different way. Like PP above me, there are people who think nothing of it. And there are people like me, who think it's not the norm. It really depend on who you mingle with. It's up to you.

Benjispruce4 · 11/12/2022 20:40

Not seen anyone do it or ever been offered it but I’m 51 and work in education so not likely to.
