And at what point do you put the heating on?
Feels like I’ve run up a small fortune on my gas this week, trying to encourage everyone to wear jumpers, fluffy socks etc but still nippy!

16 degrees and it's actually been fine. Got a jumper on, a blanket, candles and a hot water bottle. Only had the heating on a couple of hours today so I'm please with that. Last week I tried keeping it on 18 all day and it was costing over 10 pound a day it was not feasible. It is 11 degrees in the bedrooms though which is Baltic!

anythinginapinch · 11/12/2022 19:27

It's not autumn btw. Winter started 1 dec

NewNovember · 11/12/2022 19:28

23 am disabled with a newborn house will be heated as normal.

maddiemookins16mum · 11/12/2022 19:28

Heating was on earlier for an hour.. However, we turned it off and are snug as bugs in our cosy lounge which we’re heating with DMIL’s (ugly 🤣) old fashioned but utterly brilliant oil lamps. We use a bottle of lamp oil every three days (£5 a litre bottle).
It’s currently 21 degrees.

We have two lamps, one goes upstairs in DH’s office, the other down here in the lounge.

@anythinginapinch no winter starts December 21st, it's still autumn.

Yabado · 11/12/2022 19:30

-19 is when my GCH comes on and
it’s nice and warm although I still have my heated throw on as I like to be really warm and my other half prefers it not so hot

formulatingAresponse · 11/12/2022 19:31

It was on 18 then I turned it up to 19 a couple of hours ago

NoelNoNoel · 11/12/2022 19:31

19

Mirabai · 11/12/2022 19:31

21

NSA2103 · 11/12/2022 19:33

12'C - I wear layers, keep moving and am comfortable.
Having electricity and heating, we're lucky compared to many Ukrainians.

threeowlsonashelf · 11/12/2022 19:34

11 degrees. It's a nightmare. Not sure what to do. No smart meter possible. No way of insulating the house currently. Me and the dogs are under blankets pondering the next few months.

ADHD123 · 11/12/2022 19:35

Lounge with the log burner around 20 (ish) it’s been on since 11am as we’ve had a few inches of snow and wanted the room warm for when the kids came back in..

Kitchen around 7 degrees (no heating apart from a broken night storage heater 🙄) will warm up when I start cooking.

bedrooms around 14/16 degrees we have these stupid electric heaters which cost £££ to run but as it hasn’t gone above 2 degrees today I’ve left them on

IconicKitty · 11/12/2022 19:36

The meteorological calendar says winter begins on 1st December. This follows the temperature cycle and is believed by many to be more accurate.

The astronomical calendar says the 21st December. This is based on the position of the earth in relation to the sun.

DontFeatureMeOnSocialMedia · 11/12/2022 19:39

17 in the living room. 11 in the kitchen where there's no radiator and a shite window.

3 in the utility room which is at the back of the attached garage and a single skin wall. I could turn off the fridge and put all the food out there! Grin

Spenn · 11/12/2022 19:45

When i was at school, seasons followed the astronomical dates, but then we were also taught that Sunday is the first day of the week Xmas Grin

GiltEdges · 11/12/2022 19:48

Around 23 degrees. Heating is set to kick in when the temp drops below 18, but we increase it to 23 on an evening as I don’t like to be cold when trying to relax/watch tv for a couple of hours.

FancyFanny · 11/12/2022 19:48

Some of you must have very inefficient heating systems or very poorly insulated houses. We live in a draughty Edwardian semi with high ceilings, no roof insulation and a 16 year old boiler. However, after the heating being off from 8pm, when it came on in the morning it was up to 18 degrees in the living room where the thermostat is within an hour (rest of house a bit cooler but not too freezing)

And BTW- 21st December is winter solstice- that's the shortest day- nothing to do with the weather- it's really not still autumn in terms of the temperatures- the meteorological winter starts in Early December.

@anythinginapinch no winter starts December 21st, it's still autumn.

Then it would be winter until equinox. There's snow outside now but we will be seeing first signs of spring from February, snowdrops. Daffodils, when it is winter? Doesn't make sense to me. 1st December makes more sense but I tend to view it as Halloween to Candlemas.

anythinginapinch · 11/12/2022 20:00

Ok so I've checked the Met website. Dear bloody lord it's only autumn. Omg.

I tell the season based on the fact we are 10 days from solstice and there is snow outside 😆.

illiterato · 11/12/2022 20:09

About 19-20. I have underfloor heating which works on a thermostat and kicks in intermittently. I out the upstairs heating on for a hour or so a day. The house seems to stay v warm. I guess it’s probably 1950’s built and in quite a sheltered position. I know the loft is an explosion of that yellow insulating stuff. I do have big windows in the kitchen and sitting room but I’ve got those honeycomb blinds that seem to keep the cold out quite well.

TheHauntedPencilCase · 11/12/2022 20:12

15.7 at the moment. Our heating has been on 2hrs this morning and is on since 3 but we have a large cold house so this is pretty much us for now. Fire is on but not roaring as we've been all wrapped up today but we could get the living room up to nearly 19 I just cba as I've only just sat down so not feeling chilly at the moment.

RedRosie · 11/12/2022 20:17

20.1 ish.

Celeryfavour · 11/12/2022 20:19

I've had the heating on all day set to 16C but it's only just made it up to 15C from 11C this morning. I don't like it on overnight but I'm going to have to or I'll be back in the same position tomorrow.

Seenoevil33 · 11/12/2022 20:22

22.5 and I cannot believe some of you have temps in the low teens
