I shoplifted today and I'm kicking myself so much

..and I don't know why, or what I was thinking.

I could have bought the item. It wasn't something I needed either.

It was a tester tube of concealer in a department store. I had to wait around for my online order to be found, saw the concealer and had a sudden urge to put it in my pocket.

I regretted it as soon as I left the shop and wanted to go back in to apologise but bottled it.

I haven't done anything like that before and wouldn't again, but what the fuck is wrong with me that I would risk being arrested for something as pointless as a tester tube of concealer I didn't need.

There's no excuse.

I'm going to have to go back and show my face aren't I? Can I pay for it, even though they don't sell the testers?

Don't take it back OP. They can't reuse it and you don't know what kind of reaction you will get. If you feel bad about it maybe make a charity or food bank. I hope you feel better soon and all goes well

I agree with the PP who said take it back with an excuse - either toddler took it or you absent mindedly put it in your pocket. It will give you closure. THen go to the GP and tell them what happened - they won't be judgy but will recognise it as a symptom of other things going on. Just being able to get it off your chest may well be enough. In the meantime look after yourself- eat well, gett some exercise and plenty of rest. Maybe think about getting signed off work for stress for a couple of weeks as you clearly have a lot of things on your mind at them moment.

Most important of all - be kind to yourself.
