Continuation of previous thread.

Gather here all ye refugees from the foundering ship of JTT, if ye be in need of "How the heck do I format my post?" "Why can't I edit my typos?" "What do those acronyms mean?" and most importantly, "Where is everybody that I used to know?"

Or just to chat randomly.

Glad you're doing okay, Mavis.

Evelyn Waugh is everywhere for me at the moment. Last week I was on 4extra for a listen to A Good Read but they've changed the format and listened to A Handful of Dust, then I listened to the latest Alexei Sayle podcast which was all about Waugh and reminded me of Basil Seal who was being an arsehole in the other place which made me think of Waugh and now his old house is up for sale with someone who sounds like a character from a Waugh book.

When I get to my new gaff I might pull out a couple of his books for a re-read. I do like his work.

Tricyrtis2022 · 14/12/2022 12:48

Don't be embarrassed, Mavis. I thought you were quite sweet.

BinkerTell · 14/12/2022 13:10

No need to be embarrassed, Mavis. You were very restrained.

I have made it out of the house properly for the first time in two weeks thanks to the latest migraine. I'm enjoying coffee and cake in a cafe in the local market, made even more enjoyable by seeing a spaniel puppy!

MavisMcMinty · 14/12/2022 13:19

Spaniel puppies, you say? Hooray! Any excuse to post puppy pics. Here mum Dottie climbed onto the chair to get away from them but they all clambered up after her.

weaseleyes · 14/12/2022 13:27

Hooray for puppies and drunken posting, I say.

As someone who drank lots for years and now seldom drinks at all, I find if I have any alcohol I become disinhibited almost instantly and want to go on to drink THE ENTIRE WORLD. Mavis like consequences usually follow, although I have to say I am not that chipper in the morning.

The one facing the camera with its paws sticking out is making my heart hurt!

CyanCyan · 14/12/2022 15:00

Sorry to hear about your migraines @BinkerTell. What kind to you have? I’m under a neurologist who thinks I have either MS or hemiplegic migraines after I randomly started having random stroke-like episodes that started in the summer and ended up in hospital. MRI results pending, apparently they’re taking months to be interpreted at the moment due to backlogs and staff shortages.

BinkerTell · 14/12/2022 15:21

@CyanCyan they think they are related to perimenopause but current HRT regimen is not working to prevent. They were vestibular to start with but those symptoms were either coincidental or have gone and are they are now bog standard. But more frequent and longer lasting and am getting headaches in between which are like echoes of migraine pain. I have an MRI on the 28th.

He,aplastic migraines sound awful, you have my sympathies. And I hope they can rule out MS for you - my mum has it and is just getting over a relapse. Sending positive and healing vibes your way.

CyanCyan · 14/12/2022 15:40

@BinkerTell that must really affect your quality of life. I know a couple of people with chronic migraines but fortunately they were able to get them under control with medications. Do you have a follow up with a neurologist?

I was told my symptoms are more similar to MS and had an abnormal neuro exam, but I’m hopeful it might turn out to be a migraine disorder that can be controlled with medication. I had my first stroke-like episode during the heat wave after I’d been out in the sun and was taken to hospital, at the time it was terrifying and I thought I might never walk properly again. Since November I haven’t had one that’s lasted more that 24 hours thankfully, although I’m having near-constant problems with weakness in my hands and not being able to move them properly. I’ve had some time to process things and prepare myself for whatever the diagnosis turns out to be, but it is challenging when the symptoms suddenly come on and I don’t know why. If nothing else it’s helped me to work on reducing stress levels and I’ve started doing things like therapeutic bodywork to help relieve tension and anxiety.

Erm sorry that was a bit me me me but it’s actually a relief to talk about it as I’ve been avoiding the subject IRL.

DeanVolecapeAKAelderberry · 14/12/2022 15:55

Sounds scary Cyan, I hope you get a diagnosis (preferably of something very treatable) soon. Bad as it is, the not-knowing must be nightmarish.

artant · 14/12/2022 17:00

That sounds really scary, cyan. Fingers crossed for a diagnosis of something easily treatable.

Kucingsparkles · 14/12/2022 17:05

Sending you unMumsnetty hugs, @CyanCyan, and fingers crossed for a diagnosis soon.

How awful to be waiting for diagnosis, I hope it comes soon and is something treatable

Dotellhimpike · 14/12/2022 17:09

So I finally got an email from the solicitor telling me they could copmplete tomorrow and he will phone me in the morning to get my verbal go ahead. Last weekend my daughter and her partner were supposed to come up to mine with his van to help me move but I had to ask them to come up this weekend instead.

Daughter just phoned me to tell me he'd crashed his van. Thankfully he is unhurt bt the van is a wrote off, so now I have time booked off work but no van and no one (fit enough to assist with moving furniture) to help me move.

I am glad he is OK, and that is the main thing but fuxache.

Dotellhimpike · 14/12/2022 17:11

Sorry, just wrote that last rant without first reading the previous few posts, @CyanCyan I hope all goes well for you, it puts my troubles into perspective.

MavisMcMinty · 14/12/2022 17:21

Oh dear, Pike - any way you could hire a van and a person to help you? We moved here to Devon from 2 houses in London and Banbury with a hired transit - it was hell and took 2 days. If I ever move again I’m hiring a proper removals company, whatever the cost!

Kucingsparkles · 14/12/2022 17:25

Good news on completing the house purchase @Dotellhimpike, but bad news on the van accident! At least it's a relief that your daughter's partner is safe. Although that doesn't solve the moving problem. I don't know if you can find a man-and-van at such short notice??

OP posts:
Tricyrtis2022 · 14/12/2022 17:25

What a drag about the van! I hope you get something sorted without too much hassle.

Dotellhimpike · 14/12/2022 17:34

Yeah, my daughter gave me a good talking to and said `i was letting myself go through too much stress and should hire a company to do it. I have a bit of leeway in that I've extended the rental on this place until first week in February, and I have two weeks holiday booked in January but I had my heart set on having my first Christmas in my new home, I know first world problems but hey ho.

Also, when did it get to be that my daughter was the one giving me talkings to? how that that flip around occur?

Kucingsparkles · 14/12/2022 17:47

The past two times we've moved, we paid for the full packing service.

Worth. Every. Last. Penny.

(In fact the last time, we'd already moved in with PiLs and started work/school in the new city. But all our furniture and belongings were in the old house, all exactly as though we still lived there with pictures on walls, books on shelves. The day before completion, I took the train down to the old place to let the packers in. They packed and loaded all day, leaving only my bed and small overnight bag which I'd brought with me. I went to bed as normal that night, the next morning they came back and packed the bed and the last few bits. Then off they drove to the new city, where DH was waiting for them at the new house. I got the train back to the new city.)

It’s no consolation but it’s a sign you brought her up properly and she cares about you.

Tricyrtis2022 · 14/12/2022 17:54

The one time we had non-family/friends involvement for packing was in 1989. We had everything packed into boxes and went to the new place overnight to check some things and, when we got back, someone had kicked the door in and taken the lot.

We lost some sentimental items, but on the whole it did us a favour as nearly everything was hand-me-downs and insurance got us new stuff. We had the last laugh too, because both the washing machine and microwave had just packed up.

Britinme · 14/12/2022 17:56

I once (because a relocation company was paying for it) had the packing in with the removal. It was wonderful.

Ginmonkeyagain · 14/12/2022 18:14

Pay for professional movers. It is worth it.

IReallyLikeCrows · 14/12/2022 18:55

I'd bloody love to have someone packing for me. It's bloody hard work!

Today though got around 200 books to two charity shops along with a couple of bits of bedding. I seem to have accumulated way too many duvet covers. The first charity shop is a favourite of mine. Really reasonable prices and they have a book section so I knew they'd be able to take a lot of them. Got to the other and I went in to ask while my mate Snoop waited in the car. They asked how many bags I had and I had no idea so said "Four?". That would be fine. And I did have four bags left. One was bloody enormous. I lost quite a few decent totes but it was worth it.

Spoiler alert. I still have over 100 books. I'm a total book hoarder. Books are my happy place.
