Hi, I am an Asian and will be relocating to UK as a Doctor to Kings Mill Hospital. I with my Husband and 2 Kids, age (5 years & 1.7 years). I would like to know that what is the best place to live near the Hospital. A place with great schooling for my daughter and around a 2 to 3 bed house or apartment with a rental of around £300 to £500 / month. A place where my husband can find a good job as he is a project manager. A place where good grocery is easy in access. and importantly A place where people are friendly and are not raciest, though I have heard that in UK people are not at all raciest and there are very strict rules against racism, and no one is allowed for any such act but still me being a mother of 2 daughters have some butterflies in me. I hope you guys can help me out with some good suggestions.

Thank you for coming, MrsZaidi. I hope you find a place where you and your family can be really happy and settled.

It’s an area where I grew up. The hospital is in a deprived area but there are plenty of opportunities and more suitable places in Nottinghamshire, such as Gamston, once youre settled and both have jobs.

Somewhere like Ravenshead would be better than Sutton in Ashfield re racism but it is a very quiet area and is still predominantly white. I’d look closer to Nottingham rather than towards Chesterfield in relation to the lifestyle you want.

I hope you have a great time living in Notts and enjoy your new job.

Gamston?? That’s a curveball. It’s nowhere near kings mill.

Gamston?? That’s a curveball. It’s nowhere near kings mill.

Its near GMC and commutable to City if the OP decides to change jobs later down the line

Ciri · 07/12/2022 12:58

But travel to Mansfield would take her hours

Ciri · 07/12/2022 12:59

Don’t rent in Gamston OP. It’s literally the other side of Nottingham and would be a nightmare commute without a car

NotMeNoNo · 07/12/2022 13:10

Honestly do not look for somewhere to live on the wrong side of Nottingham like Gamston! I live near there and Mansfield is no way commutable - at least 45 minutes.

The Mansfield area is a bit deprived but these "where to live" discussions often get shut down by people insisting everywhere that isn't super affluent is some sort of danger zone. I'm surprised someone hasn't come on to suggest Stratford on Avon.

Either you need to be in Mansfield or on a bus route like the "threes" bus. The great thing about renting is that even if you start somewhere that's a bit grim, you can give notice and move elsewhere when you know the area, your job commitments and your needs a bit better. 5 is young enough to cope with a move of primary school if necessary. I think Hucknall is a good call as you also have the tram to Nottingham if needed.

Hello fellow neighbours!

As others have said, Berry Hill is a nice area of Mansfield but expensive.

Sutton and Kirkby are really not great. We are mostly a friendly bunch, but it is not a very diverse place and yes, there is racism. Ben Bradley is a dick, don’t email him.

I'm originally a Mansfield girl and whilst I would never pick it- it's fine, I was also a nurse many years ago at kings mill- and thought it was pretty ok - we've got worse places here in the south!

Something like this would be ideal - it's 5 minutes drive to kings mill and decent area

Crikeyalmighty · 07/12/2022 13:32

Why did you say such a low budget OP if you are a doctor by the way? Mansfield is super cheap compared to most of uk for rentals but you are still talking £750 to £950 a month for anything of decent size -

IToldYouAmillionTimesAlready · 07/12/2022 13:34

You want a place for £300-500 a MONTH? You won't get anything for that! My daughter rents a 2 bedroomed town house for 900. My sister in law rents a 3 bedroomed house for 1000. Both places are in Ravenshead (very nice area)

For the absolute cheapest rent, you'd need to look at Kirby in Ashfield, Mansfield, Sutton in Ashfield, Rainworth - and I wouldn't recommend any of those areas really.

Thanks, Hill1991, I am ready to pay 700 also but what about my other concerns, are you a local.?

Fellow UK born Indian here, my background is legal.

Areas you'll be looking at are Mansfield and Sutton-in-Ashfield, I lived in Huthwaite for 9 years (a little place in Sutton-in-Ashfield) and I can tell you now, there is racism and ignorance in bucket loads around both areas, it is why I moved away.

The hospital is excellent. I am just setting your expectations regarding the racial landscape.

Crikeyalmighty · 07/12/2022 13:41

@FuckMyLife2022 Have to agree with you- born at kings mill, lived in Mansfield till I was 29. Actually asa town it's not that bad , we've got worse places here in somerset! What I don't like is the 'chip on the shoulder' attitude and casual racism and a complete intolerance by many of anyone who isn't borderline UKIP. - particularly in the men. My mum always said Mansfield would be fine if they got rid of the blokes !! I would at least pick a nice area OP like Berry Hill as there are other doctors, accountants etc and a few more folks of different ethnenticities.

TreacleTart8 · 07/12/2022 13:51

@MrsZaidi youre welcome but I’m of limited help as I no longer work there. Your HR department/med director should be able help 😀

FuckMyLife2022 · 07/12/2022 14:31

@Crikeyalmighty yep! There’s a stark difference in attitudes on a wide range of subjects in family that have stayed there and enjoy it vs the ones of us who couldn’t wait to get out and left ASAP. I have a handful of friends from/still there who are great, but most of my school pals I will actively avoid if I’m out and about in the town centres (which I avoid like the Plague anyway!)
