Hi, I am an Asian and will be relocating to UK as a Doctor to Kings Mill Hospital. I with my Husband and 2 Kids, age (5 years & 1.7 years). I would like to know that what is the best place to live near the Hospital. A place with great schooling for my daughter and around a 2 to 3 bed house or apartment with a rental of around £300 to £500 / month. A place where my husband can find a good job as he is a project manager. A place where good grocery is easy in access. and importantly A place where people are friendly and are not raciest, though I have heard that in UK people are not at all raciest and there are very strict rules against racism, and no one is allowed for any such act but still me being a mother of 2 daughters have some butterflies in me. I hope you guys can help me out with some good suggestions.

@MsMiaWallace absolute hole for £500 in Sutton means?

There are big Asian communities in Derby and Nottingham both cities are diverse and inclusive. Mansfield/Sutton/Kirkby etc really aren't. They are traditional working class ex-mining communities.

In areas of Derby and Nottingham you will find schools that are more than 50% BAME for example. In the coalfields areas you may find only one or two BAME children per class.

There is quite a bit of deprivation and the town centres are typical of this type of ex-industrial area. However you can get into Nottingham easily for higher end shopping, culture, nightlife etc. There are regular trains and the tram park and ride is really good.

Housing is cheap (lots of people live in the area and commute to Nottingham due to house prices) you will find easy access to plenty of supermarkets, travel links are good, right by the A38, M1 junction 28 and on the Robin Hood Railway Line. There has been investment into the area recently with jobs available and new opportunities.

@JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon aren't these too far away from the hospital'?

When you say close, how close are we talking?

Hucknall is a 20 minute drive, should find something in your budget, easy access to Nottingham by bus train and tram, buses go to the hospital. Not the most diverse place but not as insular as other places in the locality.

Kings Mill hospital is the pits though, despite the shiny building built with pfi money.

picklemewalnuts · 06/12/2022 11:52

I like kingsmill!

Hucknall is a safer bet than Mansfield itself imo.

'Absolute hole in Sutton for £500' means a very scruffy house to rent- probably run down, poor state of repair etc.

MrsZaidi · 06/12/2022 12:01

@picklemewalnuts thanks for clearing this. No way going there.

If you don’t drive then surely you will need to be in Mansfield itself. Otherwise travel is going to be a nightmare and it will restrict your husbands ability to find work if he’s your taxi service.

Ciri I lived in Mansfield on & off for 5 years, in all that time I never felt unsafe going out alone at night, unlike my home city of Sheffield, I would comfortably go to the shop late at night but back in Sheffield once I was home after collecting ds that was it, the door was locked & never opened again until morning.

it sounds like a low bar for comparison

LIZS · 06/12/2022 12:10

MrsZaidi · 06/12/2022 11:02

@LIZS are you talkin about sothwell road, yup that is possible though I cannot drive at the moment, but my husband is there to provide that facility.

No meant the town itself.

picklemewalnuts · 06/12/2022 12:15

You're going to have to be careful with transport links. Isn't there. Department at the hospital you can ask advice from?

annonymousse · 06/12/2022 12:26

Does kings mill hospital have any staff family accommodation so you can get a feel for where you want to live when you get here? I know city hospital in Nottingham has apartments and houses in their grounds.

MishaBukvic · 06/12/2022 12:28

I'm just outside of Mansfield and agree with others posters that it's really not diverse. It's not unfriendly as such...just not a great diverse mix of cultures here.

I'd try to edge nearer Nottingham but with an easy commute if your husband is driving you or public transport. Hucknall is a good shout.

There are some nice areas on the new bulds at Kirkby in Ashfield , but there aren't many available at the moment, and you'd be looking £800+ easy for a 3 bed

MrsZaidi · 06/12/2022 12:29

I also hope that people over there do not differentiate between religion or sect or nationality. or isit like that?

OP posts:
MrsZaidi · 06/12/2022 12:31

@annonymousse that is the big issue, I have asked them, but they haven't replied yet

Onceuponaheartache · 06/12/2022 12:33

Without being able to drive you are going to struggle I'm afraid.

Mansfield is not a great area. I can tell you housing agencies to avoid!!

Mansfield is not a massively diverse area and not the most tolerant of areas.

Areas I would recommend would be too far given you don't drive.

Tickledtrout · 06/12/2022 12:38

I know somebody who works at Kingsmill. She lives just to the east of Newark, just inside Lincolnshire and her children are in Lincolnshire schools.
Ideally you'd commute from one of the cities nearby and maybe stay in hospital accommodation if you need to when on call - is that an option?

MishaBukvic · 06/12/2022 12:42

Just want to assure you, we're not all great stonking racists in Mansfield ! . Most of us will be nothing but welcoming. But..... there is a minority of members of our community stuck in the 70s who are xenophobic. I think most former pit towns are the same , but the majority of people are welcoming, friendly people.

You do need to go more towards the city to see more diversity , which unfortunately is further away from King's Mill.

There are train services into Mansfield/Sutton from Nottingham , but kings mill itself is not near the stations .

Have a look online at rightmove for houses in Sutton in ashfield - what do you think of them ?

jackstini · 06/12/2022 12:43

Hucknall has a direct bus route to Kingsmill and some good schools

It's close to Ravenshead and Linby - but much cheaper, although you will still look around £700 month

It is well connected by train and tram to other places too, Nottingham etc.

Possibly Annesley or some parts of Kirkby

Welcome to the area! Smile

@JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon aren't these too far away from the hospital'?

What? Derby and Nottingham? It depends upon how far you are prepared to travel. I have friends who commute to Kings Mill from just north of Derby, and I have friends who commute from Mansfield and Sutton to central Nottingham. You might not want to though, especially if you don't drive.

MrsZaidi · 06/12/2022 11:30

@MsMiaWallace absolute hole for £500 in Sutton means?

It would generally mean not well maintained, not great schools etc.

Zwicky · 06/12/2022 13:18

As you don’t drive I would look for somewhere along the route of the “threes” bus service. It runs from Nottingham, through Hucknall and Annessley, past the hospital (and Morrisons supermarket), and in to Mansfield.
It will mean you can get to work by bus if your husband can’t take you and you can get into Nottingham for shopping etc. there is a big supermarket next to the hospital but not many Asian shops unless you go to Nottingham. Asda in Hyson Green (Nottingham) is ok for Asian food too.
You are going to need a bigger budget.
The hospital has got staff accommodation (see link below)
You won’t automatically get your 5 year old into the closest school so be aware of that. It will be easier with your younger daughter when she starts so ideally you should have picked an area to settle in before December in the year before the September she starts school (in, I think, December 2024 for her to start reception September 2025).
Lots of people who work at kings mill travel from Nottingham, Derby, chesterfield and the surrounding villages. You will get an idea of where you want to be on a more permanent basis when you arrive.

bitfit · 06/12/2022 13:31

I agree with almost everyone here. You're going to struggle with that budget in Mansfield if you're looking for a nice area. I'd suggest Hucknall too as you will still be able to commute.

picklemewalnuts · 06/12/2022 13:48

Can I suggest you email the MP, Ben Bradley, and tell him the problems you are having identifying a safe, affordable area on your wage? He's quite a hands on, pragmatic guy, very involved in basic local issues like housing and employment.

We need health professionals desperately, and I'm disappointed at how hard it is to identify something suitable for you.

I can't promise you won't experience racism round here. There is some proper die hard 'local jobs for local boys' stuff around, as well as some ignorant 'accommodating refugees while our soldiers sleep rough' stuff.

However people are generally very community minded. They are not politically correct though- they will speak plainly.

picklemewalnuts · 06/12/2022 13:49

And zwicky's right about the 3 bus service. It's the most reliable and frequent in the area. Really good. I know because it doesn't come near enough to me Grin

FuckMyLife2022 · 06/12/2022 13:56

Mansfield/Ashfield are racist AF and bigoted in many other ways.

You’re better off in Nottingham, but you won’t find anything to rent for less than £800.
