School boy won't let people sit down

Every day after school we see the same boy on the bus. He sits on a double seat and refuses to let people sit next to him he puts his leg there so no one can sit there. Several times people have wanted to sit. He won't move for anyone. Such as small children who can't balance . Elderly people. Adults have told him of on several occasions telling him to let the old lady sit down . Today he sat on the back seats. The ones where there are 5/6 seats all next to each other. He had his bag on one seat. He was sitting on the one next to it, then had his leg on the other so was taking up 3 seats . An old man asked him to move over so he can sit down . The boy refused to move several times the man asked and the boy kept refusing. The man then said im 74 years old and you won't even let me sit down you have no manners. He was a frail man. He was able to get a seat in the end. But this has been going on for a few weeks now and the boy is doing it everyday. I know what school he has to but I don't know his name or anything like that. So I can't complain to the school bas thete are over 1000 pupils in the school.

We are talking a London bus at school going home time so it's very busy.

It sounds petty when I write it but he is causing upset abd stress towards passengers.

Any suggestions ?

I'd do one of two things, sit on his leg or throw his bag on the floor and sit down.

That's not how Oyster cards work. You just tap them on the reader.

Does it not flash up their photo or name?

(You can tell I live in Cornwall can’t you, we barely have public transport here 😁).

It’s tap & go it won’t flash up any details to driver. However TFL can track card usage

Gagaandgag · 05/12/2022 19:55

Many people with autism find following rules and social norms confusing or too demanding.

Yes I tend to agree about him standing. Maybe public transport should have simple
posters put up - “If you are unable to share space please stand. The seats are for everyone to share”

Obviously worded better than my try but just to give it black and white

Pick up his bag and put it on the floor. Sit down. Disgraceful behaviour. Definately take his photo and send to his school with description of his actions.

The most fascinating part of this for me is that the boy and OP are regularly in the same bus in London

I get on the bus 1 stop before him. His school finishes the same tome as my kids school. This is why I see him most times after school the bus.

Many people actually hide their true feelings incredibly well in the moment and it comes out later. As a society we have so far to go in terms of really being compassionate. They have introduced the sunflower lanyard as a means of progressing awareness, understanding and compassion.

I was on a tube once and to any other stranger I could have appeared absolutely fine.
I hated the fact that people were so close to me and when I got off the tube I went in the toilet and fainted!

Not the least bit similar as a scenario

Ditto!
The old man should have sat down on the little twat’s leg.

Why do you and your children not sit down, so he can't?

Curtaintwitcher72 · 05/12/2022 20:03

OP, what does he say and do when people challenge him? Does he smirk/look away/swear in response?

RisingSunn · 05/12/2022 20:03

OP I would take a photo of uniform and send to school. So they can address everyone.

I don’t think you are rejecting ideas. London buses are a bit different. Bus drivers do not get involved in things like this. (From what I’ve seen).

Passengers at most will comment but that’s it - simply because of the risk of teens carrying knives.

You have to be able to ‘back up’ your action . Eg. Moving his bag could result in escalation.

I knew ( as this is MN) that someone would have made an excuse for this rude twat by suggesting some ND syndrome

It’s called selfishness and rudeness as this kid was fine beforehand.

Ilovelblue · 05/12/2022 20:04

I had an issue recently with the girls at my local high school hogging the pavement outside the school whilst waiting for the bus meaning any pedestrian had to step into the road at such a busy time. They wouldn't shift. I wrote to the headmistress and said they were a disgrace to the reputation of the school. Soon after that, a teacher would go out to make sure they left enough room for pedestrians to pass. I appreciate it's a different situation to the bolshie kid on the bus but surely anything dragging the school's reputation down would make the staff react. Good luck! For what it's worth, I would move his bag as others have said.

Joshanddonna · 05/12/2022 20:05

I’d just sit on him.

I don't have enough bums to stop him sitting.

Exactly and this thread has extremis on both ends, ‘He May knife you!’ to ‘He could be autistic’

If you say before him you would be able to offer a seat to old man though

That’s a great idea!
There is a girl’s school here that causes pedestrians to have to walk in the road as the kids won’t give way-
I’m going to email the school
It’s ridiculous to see old people with sticks having to walk on an A road for a few metres because of a gaggle of kids.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 05/12/2022 20:09

👏👏 to the bus co.who told the school that if the bad behaviour didn’t stop, nobody in that uniform would be allowed on the bus.

mondaytosunday · 05/12/2022 20:11

Of course the school will care. The students are in uniform and represent the school when out in public. Take a pic and send it to the school.
Though if it's a bag on the seat I'd pick it up and put it in his lap and sit down. I'm not brave enough to sit on his leg in case my bulk injures it!

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 05/12/2022 20:12

Many people with autism find following rules and social norms confusing or too demanding.

Presumably most people don't suddenly develop autism at this lad's age, though? He was fine until a few weeks ago. I reckon he's just reached that sassy stage and/or seen somebody doing it online and copied.

The old man should have sat down on the little twat’s leg.

And, if he had a bottle of water, cupped some in his hands and then thrown it between his legs on to the boy's legs when the lad was looking away at his phone. "Oops, so sorry, sonny - when you get to my age, you can't always hold it in anymore!"

lightlypoached · 05/12/2022 20:13

I'd sit on his leg.

Mycatsgoldtooth · 05/12/2022 20:13

@LightDrizzle best thing I’ve read on the internet all day. A Hessle Road woman can sort anyone out.

lightlypoached · 05/12/2022 20:13

And then fart on it. Loudly. Xmas Grin

AlwaysLatte · 05/12/2022 19:39

You can't take picture of a child. Speak to the bus driver, and if nothing is done then take it up with the bus company. Copy that letter in to the school and maybe a general announcement can be made at school.

Legally, you can take a photo of anyone.

spare123 · 05/12/2022 20:14

If you know the school then I'd definitely take a picture, make it obvious that you're doing so. And then I'd pick his bag up, chuck it on the floor and sit down
