Films that you thought you'd love but didn't.

Which films disappointed you? I mean films that you were excited to see but they didn't live up to expectations?

Amadeus was one for me. It ticked so many boxes but I really didn't enjoy it and it took me 4 attempts to watch it all. Mozart was so incredibly annoying, I appreciate that was the point but he was so obnoxious that I struggled to watch him and I found the whole thing dull. It's so far from being a bad movie but it's just not for me.

Singing In The Rain didn't really live up to expectations either as a big fan of old movies and musicals. It was ok and I could admire the work put into it and the talent but it didn't really make me feel anything .

See how they run, this year, I'm a huge Agatha Christie fan but thought this film was rubbish and only watched half before I turned it off.

I'm a big fan of Agatha Christie too. I've been debating watching it. Perhaps I won't bother.

For me it felt like an Agatha Christie film for someone who hasnt read Agatha Christie books. Dh (not an Agatha Christie reader) thought it was quite good he also fancies Saoirse Ronan

Living.

AuntieDolly · 29/11/2022 20:14

I really liked See how they run' but I do enjoy quirky films that no-one else likes.
I thought I'd like Mrs Harris goes to Paris, which would normally be right up my street, but I thought it was puerile drivel.

rosegoldwatcher · 29/11/2022 20:16

Movies made from books that I have read.

Most recently, The Wonder, which I loved as a book - the film not so much.

ShillyShallySherbet · 29/11/2022 20:17

Eat Pray Love
One Day
I loved the books so much but the films were such a disappointment

YogaLite · 29/11/2022 20:17

Evita & La la land, did nothing for me.

Skinnermarink · 29/11/2022 20:20

The Time Traveller’s Wife was awful. Henry managed to be all kinds of entitled and annoying.

Girl on the Train- WHY set it in a bland NY suburb with rolling lawns? Just didn’t work.

lurchermummy · 29/11/2022 20:28

I agree with all of the above. In fact I tend to find that adaptations of books you've enjoyed are rarely good. Where the Crawdads Sing would be my nomination.

IheartBTS · 29/11/2022 20:28

Supernova, staring Colin Firth and Stanley Tucci. I will admit to having a soft spot for both of them. The film had the potential to be good, but I will admit I was somewhat disappointed with it.

dudsville · 29/11/2022 20:33

"Where the crawdads sing" - I just won't read this or see the film because the title winds me up so much. I just feel like the author is playing it too much on the nose. It's never going to be "i know why the cage birds sing", so stop trying! I realise i may have veered off topic here...

defi · 29/11/2022 20:33

The new black panther movie. An hour too long. Didn't like the new Adam's family Wednesday series. I wanted dark and macabre but it was more tween

SweetSakura · 29/11/2022 20:34

La la land. Immediately thought of it when I saw the thread title.

Disydoll12 · 29/11/2022 20:37

Love Actually. I usually love a nice Christmas movie, couldn't wait for it to end in the cinema. I'm not even sure why I disliked it so much.

I hate that one with a passion.

UsingChangeofName · 29/11/2022 20:42

Schindler's List. I should have been sobbing, but it just didn't engage me at all. So disappointed.

Obviously La La Land - utter tripe. It's not often I don't see a film out to the end, but this was one of those times.

Luminousnose · 29/11/2022 20:44

Another one for LaLa Land. I adore old Hollywood musicals and was so looking forward to it. Very very boring,

ILIWYS · 29/11/2022 20:50

Most recently Licorice Pizza. Utterly boring with zero plot.

pellythefamouspenguin · 29/11/2022 20:52

The Greatest Showman. I REALLY wanted to see it after seeing the trailer quite a few times. It was terrible (but with good music I admit).
Uncut Gems. Again, huge build up but in the end it was far too tense so I gave up.

Whichwhatnow · 29/11/2022 20:57

Captain Corelli's Mandolin was probably my favourite book for a while in my teens so I was very excited to see they were making a film. Not so much once I saw the casting (both way too old for the characters they were playing!) but I still gave it a shot. I couldn't believe that they changed the ending (which was so beautifully bittersweet) to one where Corelli comes back just after the war ffs!

See also - the Beach. Big part of the book is Richard's unrequited love for the French girl (I forget her name). Yet in the film they get together. Why do films do this??

Oh and I found Hateful Eight a bit meh as well compared to most Tarantino films.

Unwellchild325 · 29/11/2022 21:02

La la land. It was pure torture

AncientQuercus · 29/11/2022 21:07

We went to see Old at the cinema. We'd been really looking forward to it after seeing the trailers. Hugely disappointing.

I actually really enjoyed Where the Crawdad's Sing. Went to see it with no clue what it was about, and bought the book after we'd seen the film.

PinkiOcelot · 29/11/2022 21:13

It was a while ago now, but PS I Love You. Absolutely loved the book, but hated the film.

I was bored with Girl on a train as well.

Cocolapew · 29/11/2022 21:16

Bridesmaids, really looked forward to this after everyone going on about how hilarious it was.
It was shite.
