Films that you thought you'd love but didn't.

Which films disappointed you? I mean films that you were excited to see but they didn't live up to expectations?

Amadeus was one for me. It ticked so many boxes but I really didn't enjoy it and it took me 4 attempts to watch it all. Mozart was so incredibly annoying, I appreciate that was the point but he was so obnoxious that I struggled to watch him and I found the whole thing dull. It's so far from being a bad movie but it's just not for me.

Singing In The Rain didn't really live up to expectations either as a big fan of old movies and musicals. It was ok and I could admire the work put into it and the talent but it didn't really make me feel anything .

There should be a law against the ruination of beloved books. The latest Little Women for example infuriated me with the changes it made. They literally took the heart out of an iconic and wonderful book.

Agree about La La Land. What a load of tosh!

PrancerandDancer · 29/11/2022 23:41

Saw the thread title and immediately thought La La Land.... Seems I'm not alone. I usually love Emma Stone and the trailers made it seem magical. Was so disappointed.

romany4 · 29/11/2022 23:47

Avatar..brilliant effects but SO boring..

The kings speech.

How dare you!!
I've watched it a million times I love it so much

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 30/11/2022 00:03

Elvis. Didn’t get the hype.
See how they run was meh too.

But I really enjoyed Mrs Harris goes to Paris, especially the dresses!

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 30/11/2022 00:12

The horse whisperer

Why make a film of a popular book then ruin it by totally changing the end 😡

Totally agree about Girl on a Train, Captain Corelli, The Beach and Time Travellers Wife.

Also The Bridges of Madison County, Clint Eastwood was far too old.

Beamur · 30/11/2022 00:18

Toy Story 4.
Almost ruined my DD's childhood! She had loved the first 3 and the 4th was a travesty.

Cattenberg · 30/11/2022 00:27

Have also decided that I Really can't do musicals. All this bursting into song and then carry on with the movie like nothing happened...🤣

I quite agree.

I loved Amelie and thought The Bridges of Madison County was a rare example of the film being better than the book.

I thought I’d enjoy Moulin Rouge!, because I’d love to have spent time in Paris during the Belle Époque. But the film was a silly, disjointed mess.

Mammyloveswine · 30/11/2022 05:44

Love Rosie... just didn't have the same impact as the book (also the book had a different name). Where rainbows end is the books original name.

RoachPussy · 30/11/2022 06:29

I’m Thinking of Ending Things
The Lost Daughter
The Laundromat
Roma

Maybe I’m just less intelligent than I think I am 🙄

allthegoodusernameshavegone · 30/11/2022 06:47

Elvis watched 10 minutes, hated it
moulin rouge, boring shite
Mama Mia, cringy
greatest showman, very hard going
all films others raved about, I guess I’m not a musical lover

VinoDino · 30/11/2022 06:48

Another vote for The Beach. Hated it so much I didn't want to see another Danny Boyle film again.

The book is one of my favourite books and of course a film rarely lives up to the film adaptation, but they didn't get it at all. Attempted to 'Hollywood' it and it just lost what it's all about. Still remember how annoyed I was coming out of the cinema after looking forward to its release for months.

Also yes to the Girl on the Train. Very poor. I liked Crawdads but haven't read the book.

BelgiumArse · 30/11/2022 07:24

The Duchess, with Kieira Knightley, the book was wonderful (Georgiana) about the Duchess of Devonshire.

Pride and Predudice the 2005 film, which appeared to have Keira Knightley in again as Elizabeth Bennett.

Didn't think West Side Story could be bettered but I understand why Spielburg did it, I did enjoy it though.

TheSausageKingofChicago · 30/11/2022 07:25

I never like films of books I’ve read either.

Equally, I can’t stand Austen Powers.

Roselilly36 · 30/11/2022 07:25

The Greatest Showman, kept watching hoping it would get better, it didn’t.

mrsadams69 · 30/11/2022 07:27

This title immediately made me think of Eternal Sunshine of the spotless mind. It came out back when I used to have a cinema card and see every thing and the trailer was amazing, shown before everything for weeks. We couldn't wait to see it. Then... meh.

HowieDBreakfastBeef · 30/11/2022 07:35

@Robin60 what's to 'get'? It's a film about isolation and the effect on the mind when your world is so small?

Pugdogmom · 30/11/2022 08:06

Another one...Bohemian Rhapsody
I was so looking forward to seeing it as I love Queen but thought it was awful. Rami Malek just sounded like he had too many teeth so the voice grated on me. Another one I fell asleep to. 😴

Janieread · 30/11/2022 08:07

Bones And All.

HisHororable · 16/11/2023 20:00

The movie Mozart was blasphemous to what he intended. They hired an actor to act like Salieri was right, it was all just his sick joke. Nobody was supposed to find out or care about that part.
Ask your 5-year old's who they think is better, Twinkle Twinkle Little Star by Mozart when he was 5, while the recording industry was sheet music, or the grownups who wrote The Toy Story songs?
Mozart would not have looked like that, or acted like that. He just thought he was too good for people to care about that part.

greenacrylicpaint · 16/11/2023 20:03

oppenheimer

it was so hyped up and so <yawn>

Oxomoco · 16/11/2023 20:03

Disydoll12 · 29/11/2022 20:37

Love Actually. I usually love a nice Christmas movie, couldn't wait for it to end in the cinema. I'm not even sure why I disliked it so much.

Because it’s lazy misogyny wrapped up in sugary sentimentality, and virtually everyone involved is phoning it in, including a lot of people who know better.? You’re entirely right not to like it.

the80sweregreat · 16/11/2023 20:18

That ' everything everywhere all at once' nonsense. Had a great trailer and start , then descended into complete confusion!

Gnomegarden32 · 16/11/2023 20:49

Agree Bridesmaids was mediocre.

Love Actually is a compilation of gross and offensive male fantasies (Emma Thompson and Bill Nighy are great in it though)

Citizen Kane was disappointing

I won’t hear a word said against Amelie or Singing in the Rain however!

kikisparks · 16/11/2023 20:53

Parasite, I loved the first half and then the tone changed completely.

La La Land as others have said, was expecting some actual plot.

Love Actually - I like certain cheesy Christmas movies but this one just annoys me.
